Record and listen to representative ASMR material, then test the actual YouTube ingest path and monitor stream health. A limiter cannot repair distortion that has already happened upstream.
What clipping is—and where to stop it
Digital audio has a hard ceiling: OBS identifies 0 dBFS as the maximum. If the signal reaches or exceeds that ceiling, the result can sound harsh or distorted. Preventing it means tracing the audio path and controlling levels before overload occurs—not simply turning down the final stream after distortion has been introduced.
For a typical setup, follow the signal from microphone or playback source → preamp, interface, or mixer → OBS source filters and fader → OBS stream output → YouTube. Check each point you can monitor. OBS’s meter helps reveal peaks, but it cannot show or undo distortion that happened before the signal arrived in OBS.
Set gain using real ASMR sounds
Start at the microphone or source
Begin with the microphone’s physical gain control or the playback device’s output level. OBS recommends checking audio at the source and again in OBS. Don’t set gain using silence or a single quiet trigger: test the sounds your channel actually uses, such as a loud whisper, close-mic breath, tapping, brushing, or crinkles. Leave room for the loudest unexpected transient.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Watch peaks as well as the average level
Keep routine peaks below 0 dBFS rather than letting the meter touch the ceiling. OBS’s 2022 technical guide gives -9 dBFS as a “Permitted Maximum Level” reference. Treat that as conservative headroom guidance for meter readings that may miss higher peaks—not as a required YouTube loudness target or an ideal final ASMR level. The right level depends on your source and program material.
Check the full mix
If several sources are active, listen to and meter their combined signal as well as each source on its own. A mix can peak higher when sources overlap. Reduce the source or mix gain where the overload begins instead of relying on a downstream processor to conceal it.

Put OBS’s Limiter last in the filter chain
In OBS, open the relevant source’s Filters and add a Limiter after the other filters for that source. If you protect a mix bus instead, put the Limiter last among the filters on that bus. OBS explicitly recommends that the Limiter be the last filter in its chain.
OBS documents a default threshold of -6.00 dB and a default release of 60 ms. These are starting defaults, not settings proven best for every ASMR sound. Listen while adjusting: excessive limiting can make transients dull or the sound pump, and a limiter cannot restore audio already clipped at the microphone, preamp, or another earlier stage.

Record, listen, and test the YouTube stream
- Monitor the source. Listen at the microphone, interface, mixer, or playback device if you can. Check for distortion there before adjusting OBS.
- Monitor in OBS. Listen to the signal that will go to the stream and watch the peak meter while triggering the loudest and softest sounds in your planned program.
- Make a recording and play it back. OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening to the file before going live. Playback can reveal clipping or artifacts that are easy to miss while operating.
- Test the actual YouTube ingest path. Use the same audio and stream configuration planned for the broadcast. YouTube recommends including audio and movement similar to the intended stream and watching stream health and messages during the event.
- Recheck after changes. For a long-running stream, inspect the output periodically and after changing a source, gain setting, scene, filter, interface, or software. This is prudent operating practice; there is no established check interval or special 24/7 clipping setting.
Keep encoding settings separate from level control
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and constant-bitrate encoding. Use compatible encoder settings for delivery, but don’t expect codec, sample-rate, or bitrate choices to fix a clipped input. They serve a different purpose from gain staging and peak control.
Choose the right control for the problem
| Control point | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Source gain or preamp | Prevent overload early and preserve headroom. | Requires checking the actual material and device controls. |
| OBS fader and meters | Set the stream mix level and observe peaks. | Metering does not repair distortion introduced before OBS. |
| OBS Limiter | Catch peaks at a defined ceiling; place it last in the filter chain. | Cannot recover already-clipped audio; aggressive limiting can sound unnatural. |
| YouTube encoder configuration | Deliver compatible encoded audio and video. | Codec, sample rate, and bitrate are not clipping controls. |
Common clipping problems and fixes
The OBS meter stays low, but the recording sounds distorted
The source, preamp, or interface may already be overloaded. Check and reduce gain earlier in the path, then listen again through OBS; lowering only the OBS fader will make distorted audio quieter, not clean.

The stream clips only on loud triggers
Set gain using the loudest representative material, not just the average sound. Leave more headroom and check whether overlapping sources push the mix over the ceiling.
The Limiter makes the sound pump or dull
It may be working too hard. Lower the signal earlier in the chain and reassess the threshold and release while listening to the actual material. The limiter is a final safeguard, not a substitute for sensible source gain.

The OBS recording sounds clean, but the YouTube output has a problem
Run a test through YouTube with the same audio and stream configuration, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. Confirm that the audio encoding settings are compatible; those settings still do not correct clipping earlier in the chain.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded ASMR program intended to loop continuously, StreamNeo runs the YouTube stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a live microphone or camera feed. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
What YouTube does not settle
The cited guidance does not establish one ideal integrated loudness target for ASMR on YouTube Live, a special audio configuration for a 24/7 stream, or an uptime guarantee. It also does not establish that YouTube will normalize or repair every live stream’s audio. Don’t count on platform processing to fix clipped input: prevent overload at the source, use the OBS limiter as a final ceiling, and verify the actual output by listening.
