Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo prevent a 24/7 rain loop from going black on YouTube, test the full stream before relying on it, then trace any failure from the loop source to the encoder, internet connection, YouTube ingest, and copyright checks. First establish whether the picture is already black in the encoder preview or local recording: that split tells you whether to troubleshoot playback and encoding or the feed going to YouTube.
Test the rain loop before starting a long stream
- Run a test with the intended source. Use the same rain video and audio you plan to stream. A still rain image can conceal a frozen player, so check that the source actually advances over time.
- Check YouTube’s preview before going live. In the Live Control Room, inspect the preview and stream-health messages before starting the broadcast. YouTube’s Live streaming tips say: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.”
- Verify your local recording. If your encoder is set to record locally, confirm the file appears and continues to grow during the test. This helps distinguish a source or encoder failure from a problem after the signal leaves your computer.
- Test continuity and recovery. Before depending on a long event, confirm the source keeps playing and learn how your encoder behaves after a connection interruption. If you use a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking whether playback rolls over to the backup.
YouTube recommends testing before going live, checking the preview and stream quality, and verifying that a local archive is being written. These checks reduce surprises, but they cannot guarantee that every black-screen cause is prevented.
Diagnose where the picture turns black
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview and local recording are black or frozen. | The rain-loop file or player, source routing, encoder errors, and computer load. |
| The encoder preview and local recording look normal, but YouTube’s preview or viewers see a problem. | Live Control Room stream health, the outbound connection, and YouTube ingest settings. |
| YouTube shows a copyright warning or placeholder image. | Content enforcement and the streaming rights for the video and audio. |
If the encoder preview or local recording is black
- Confirm the loop file still plays in its source application and that the correct source is routed into the encoder.
- Check the encoder’s error messages and computer CPU load. If the picture or sound is already wrong in the encoder or local recording, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points to the source routed into the encoder as a likely area to inspect.
- Keep the encoder software current, then run another test and verify that the preview and recording show ongoing motion.
If the local signal is healthy but YouTube is not
- Read the stream-health indicator and any format or container errors in the Live Control Room.
- Check the outbound upload connection. YouTube recommends testing internet strength and contacting your internet service provider if the test shows a problem.
- A wired Ethernet connection can be useful when diagnosing an unstable connection, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a black screen.
YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance separates problems in the local encoder signal from problems with the connection sending that signal to YouTube. Use that distinction rather than changing unrelated settings at random.
Check the format, stream key, and destination
- Video and audio format: YouTube’s live-stream error guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as the expected pair for proper ingestion. If the Live Control Room reports a format or container error, resolve that specific message and test again.
- Stream key: The key is the credential the encoder uses to send the feed for YouTube to accept. Make sure the encoder has the key for the current stream configuration, particularly if you changed or reset it.
- Stream URL: Confirm the encoder is sending to the stream URL associated with that configuration. The key and destination must match the active setup.
YouTube’s live-stream error guidance can help identify ingest errors; its stream-key and URL guidance explains the connection details to verify.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Rule out a copyright placeholder or interruption
A black or placeholder-like image is not always a playback or network fault. YouTube says that a detected match to third-party content can replace the stream with a placeholder, and unresolved content may interrupt or terminate a broadcast. Its Copyright issues with live streams page states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.”
- Check YouTube Studio for copyright warnings or strikes and read the message attached to the affected stream.
- Confirm you have streaming rights for both the rain video and its audio. A recording being available to play locally does not establish that it is cleared for a public livestream.
- If YouTube identifies a match, follow the notice and resolve the rights issue; repeatedly restarting the encoder does not address an enforcement action.
Do not mistake the archive limit for a black-screen cutoff
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving note, not evidence that an active stream turns black at 12 hours. For a 24/7 broadcast, treat continuous playback and archive retention as separate operational needs: verify that the source and encoder continue sending video, and keep your own recording if you need a complete record across longer runtimes. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archiving guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube automatically turn a 24/7 stream black after 12 hours?
No such cutoff is established by YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic-archive note; it concerns archiving, not active playback.
Can a rain video’s audio cause a livestream placeholder?
Yes. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted audio and video, so both need appropriate streaming rights.
