First locate where the picture stops updating: check the video source and OBS preview, OBS’s dropped-frame and encoder status, then YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health. Fix the fault at that point, and run a realistic test before leaving a stream on for hours.
Find out where the picture freezes
A frozen image can originate before the encoder, while OBS renders or sends the stream, at YouTube’s ingest, or only on a viewer’s device or connection. Those problems need different fixes; changing bitrate will not repair a source that has stopped playing.
- Check the source and local preview. Confirm that the video or game capture is moving and that the OBS preview updates. If either is static, inspect source playback and the scene or encoder configuration before changing network settings.
- Check OBS statistics. Look for dropped frames and encoder or rendering overload. Dropped frames point toward an unstable or insufficient connection to the ingest server; a static local preview points elsewhere.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the live preview, stream health, and any messages. Confirm that YouTube is receiving an updating image and audio.
- Compare with a viewer’s report. If OBS shows no dropped frames and the YouTube preview moves, ask whether the issue affects one viewer, device, or network. Viewer buffering does not by itself show that the broadcast source is frozen.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its Help page states: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube’s encoder settings and live-stream guidance also notes that live streams are transcoded into multiple output formats for viewers.
Set OBS and YouTube’s ingest settings sensibly
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s reviewed guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are configuration recommendations, not a guarantee against source, software, power, network, or platform faults.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate
Use the bitrate row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. For example, YouTube lists these recommended rates for 1080p:
| Output | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended figures, not minimums; its guidance lists minimum rates separately. Check the current YouTube table for other output combinations and before a long broadcast, since encoder guidance can change. YouTube recommends RTMPS.

Keep the connection stable for the whole run
A speed test taken once is not proof that a connection can sustain the selected bitrate continuously. If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects, OBS identifies an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate as the likely problem area. Lower the bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, while keeping it consistent with YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen output. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point in its general troubleshooting guidance; treat that as a rough starting point, not a YouTube rule or guarantee.
Fix dropped frames and intermittent disconnections
When OBS reports dropped frames, troubleshoot the path from your computer to the ingest server rather than assuming viewers are the cause. Change one variable at a time and watch whether the relevant counter or YouTube stream-health indicator improves.

- On Wi-Fi: test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming; a cable is useful only if Wi-Fi instability or a suspect network cable is actually involved.
- Check the network equipment and path: inspect router, modem, drivers, and cables. Temporarily investigate VPN, security software, or network-optimizer interference if present.
- Reduce the configured bitrate: lower it to a rate the connection can sustain steadily, then retest. Do not confuse a lower bitrate with a fix for a frozen source or overloaded encoder.
- Escalate persistent instability: if the connection continues to drop after local checks, contact your ISP. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers these checks and the 75% starting point: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
If OBS has no dropped frames but viewers see buffering
OBS notes that viewers use different devices and internet connections, and may buffer even when the broadcaster has no dropped frames. Check whether the YouTube preview is moving and whether reports come from a particular viewer or device. If the broadcast is healthy but playback is difficult for some viewers, a lower bitrate or output quality may improve reach; choose a setting that remains within YouTube’s guidance for its codec and frame rate. YouTube’s automatic transcoding provides multiple output formats, but does not establish that every viewer’s connection or device will play without buffering.
See OBS’s guide to dropped frames and network issues for its distinction between sender-side drops and viewer playback problems.

Prepare a 24/7 run and respond to failures
A short test should resemble the actual broadcast: use the same source type, audio, motion, encoder settings, and network path. Watch OBS and YouTube’s indicators long enough to catch instability rather than checking only that the stream starts. During the event, monitor stream health and messages. These checks reduce avoidable configuration mistakes but cannot guarantee recovery from every frozen source, software fault, power interruption, network failure, or upstream outage.
- If the source or OBS preview stops moving, inspect playback and the scene or encoder configuration.
- If OBS dropped frames rise or the connection disconnects, investigate bitrate and network stability.
- If YouTube’s preview or stream health shows a problem, use its messages to determine whether the stream is being received correctly.
- If only some viewers report buffering while the preview moves and OBS has no drops, consider viewer device and network variation before changing the source.
Advice for other services is not interchangeable: Cloudflare Stream’s freezing guide discusses its own keyframe and upload-to-duration diagnostics. Use YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum for a YouTube stream, not another service’s values. Likewise, hardware encoder changes are not a universal first fix; investigate encoder or rendering overload before considering GPU or NVENC changes. Cloudflare Stream’s service-specific guide and NVIDIA’s broadcasting guide address those separate contexts.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an OBS troubleshooting setting. The steps are: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube. See StreamNeo or plan details.
