If an episode repeats before the queue ends, remove its duplicate entry from the playlist. For one file played through a Media Source, turn off that source’s Loop option instead.
First identify what is repeating
OBS has two relevant built-in sources. VLC Video Source handles a playlist of media files; Media Source is for an individual file and has its own loop setting. The OBS Project’s media-source guide, dated January 11, 2022, documents these source types and their playback controls. Exact UI details may vary by OBS version and operating system.
- One episode plays again before the queue ends: inspect the playlist for duplicate entries or different filenames that point to the same audio.
- The queue plays through and starts again: turn off Loop Playlist.
- Episodes play in an unexpected order: turn off Shuffle Playlist if you want the listed order.
- A single episode repeats: check the Loop option on its Media Source.
- Playback restarts after you return to a scene: check the VLC source’s visibility behavior, which controls what happens when the source is not visible.
Stop a multi-episode playlist from restarting
- In OBS, select the scene containing the podcast source and find that source in the Sources list.
- Open the properties for the VLC Video Source.
- Review the playlist entries. Remove any episode listed more than once, including entries with different filenames if they refer to the same audio.
- Turn off Loop Playlist if the playlist should stop after its final item. The OBS guide lists this setting as on by default; it restarts the source after it runs out of media files.
- Turn off Shuffle Playlist if episodes should play in the order shown. Shuffle changes playback order; it is separate from looping.
- Test the relevant behavior: determine whether the repeat occurs before the last item, only after the final item, or after a scene change. If practical, use a short copy of the playlist containing the suspected duplicate or final item.
OBS documents playlist entries and loop and shuffle controls, but its guide does not claim that it automatically detects or removes duplicate files. Check the entries yourself.
Stop a single episode from looping
If the episode is loaded as a Media Source, open that source’s properties and turn off Loop. This is the individual-file control; changing Loop Playlist on a VLC Video Source will not fix a Media Source that is looping on its own.

Check scene visibility behavior
If playback restarts when you switch away from a scene and return, inspect the VLC Video Source’s options for when the source is not visible. OBS documents choices to stop and restart playback, pause and resume it, or always play. These settings govern visibility changes, not whether the playlist contains duplicate entries. Choose the behavior that matches your scene workflow, then test a scene change separately from a playlist-end repeat.
Make sure VLC Video Source is available
VLC Video Source relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS specifically advises users of 64-bit OBS to install 64-bit VLC. If the source is missing, check the VLC installation and that its bitness matches the OBS installation before rebuilding the playlist with a different source.

Should you use a playlist plugin?
The OBS forum listing for Media Playlist Source describes a plugin alternative to VLC Video Source with playlist editing and shuffle features, and lists OBS 30.0.0 as its minimum version. Its project page describes it as based on Media Source and notes options for choosing the first or current file on restart. The cited plugin information does not establish that it tracks playback history or automatically excludes episodes already played. Before installing it, check its current compatibility, operating-system support, maintenance status, and download information—and confirm it supports the behavior you need.
