If a YouTube Live broadcast keeps replaying a file, change the repeat setting in the encoder—not YouTube’s viewer-side Loop control. In OBS, turn off Loop for a single Media Source, or turn off Loop Playlist for a multi-file VLC Video source. Keep Shuffle Playlist off if you want the files to play in their listed order.
First identify what is repeating
There are two different situations that can look alike:
- You are watching a YouTube playlist: YouTube’s player can repeat the current video or the whole playlist. Change the Loop control in the player.
- You are broadcasting local videos as a YouTube Live stream: The encoder sends the video feed to YouTube. Change the repeat setting on the source in that encoder.
YouTube’s player Loop setting changes playback for the viewer. It does not change the prerecorded media being sent by an encoder to a live stream. YouTube documents the player controls separately from its encoder-based live-stream workflow (YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube; YouTube Help: Live streaming).
Stop a YouTube playlist from looping while you watch
Open the playlist controls in YouTube and turn off Loop. If only the current video keeps repeating, clear the single-video repeat setting rather than changing your broadcast setup. YouTube provides instructions for desktop, mobile, TV, and game-console playback, so the control’s location varies by device (YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube).

Stop a local video from repeating in OBS
For one file: turn off Media Source Loop
- In OBS, select the scene containing the video source.
- Open the properties for the active Media Source. The exact menu layout can vary by OBS build and operating system; use the source’s properties rather than relying on a particular menu path.
- Clear Loop, then confirm the change.
- Check that the correct Media Source is active in the scene and that it points to the intended file.
OBS defines Loop as whether the file plays again after playback completes (OBS Project: Media Sources, published January 11, 2022).
For several files: turn off VLC Video Loop Playlist
- In OBS, open the properties of the playlist’s VLC Video source.
- Clear Loop Playlist to prevent the sequence from restarting after it runs out of files.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you want files to play in the listed order. Shuffle affects order; it is not the repeat control.
- Check that the intended files are in the playlist and that this source is active in the scene.
The OBS VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC (OBS Project: Media Sources).

Troubleshoot a file that still repeats
- The same video repeats during a live broadcast: Verify that you changed the setting on the active encoder source. Turning off YouTube’s player Loop control only affects a viewer’s playback.
- A single OBS file starts over: Reopen that Media Source’s properties and check that Loop is off.
- A playlist starts over after its last file: Check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source. Turning off Shuffle alone will not stop the playlist from restarting.
- The playlist plays files in an unexpected order: Check that Shuffle Playlist is off, then review the playlist contents.
- The VLC Video source does not work: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
Do not confuse a live-ingestion playlist with your program playlist
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance uses “media playlist” for the segments that make up a live feed. That is a protocol-level playlist, not a list of separate program videos in OBS. The HLS documentation specifies a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; that requirement applies to HLS ingestion and should not be generalized to every YouTube Live encoder configuration (YouTube Live Streaming API: HLS ingestion; YouTube Live Streaming API: Ingestion protocols).
