Start by measuring the inputs and finding out whether the problem is a fixed offset, drift that grows over time, or a jump at the loop seam. Those symptoms point to different causes, so changing timestamp flags before inspecting the media can hide the real issue without fixing it. For an FFmpeg loop, also verify that -stream_loop is placed before the correct -i and that the source can seek cleanly to its loop point.
First identify what kind of sync problem you have
Watch or record the stream near the beginning and again after it has run for a while. Note whether the audio is already late or early at the start, whether the gap steadily grows, or whether sync suddenly changes at each repeat. These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular cause.
- Nearly constant offset: audio and video may begin at different points on their timelines. Measure the difference before considering an input timestamp offset.
- Offset grows with runtime: investigate timestamp continuity, source clocks, durations, and any live encoding workflow. A fixed offset cannot generally correct cumulative drift.
- Sync jumps at each loop: inspect the loop seam, source seekability, and keyframe placement. A timestamp adjustment alone may not repair a bad join.
Without the input files, FFmpeg build, command, and timestamp measurements, no single cause or universal command can be identified.
Inspect the files and capture the exact setup
Record the command and environment
Save the full FFmpeg command with the YouTube stream key redacted. Record the FFmpeg version and build, operating environment, and whether audio and video are in one muxed file or supplied as separate inputs. That distinction matters: a separate audio input has its own timestamps and looping behavior.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Probe each input
Use ffprobe to inspect each source, then compare its audio and video streams. Record the codecs, time bases, start times, durations, frame rates, sample rates, and whether timestamps remain monotonic. Compare audio and video starting points and endpoints, and inspect the repeated transition as well as the first pass.
These measurements help distinguish a start-time mismatch from timing that diverges over the clip or a discontinuity at the seam. FFmpeg’s documentation says input synchronization depends on source timestamps derived from the same clock for expected results; if either input lacks a starting timestamp, FFmpeg makes no input sync adjustment. See the FFmpeg documentation for the installed build’s current option descriptions.

Place loop options on the input they should repeat
-stream_loop is an input option. Put it immediately before the -i for the input that should repeat. -stream_loop -1 requests an infinite loop. If audio and video come from separate files and both should repeat, configure each input deliberately; looping only the video does not make a separate audio input repeat.
Decide whether separate sources should restart together or on different cycles. Their duration and starting timestamps affect whether a repeat remains aligned. Do not assume that two independently looped files will have matching boundaries simply because each loops successfully.

Test loop seams before changing sync settings
Stream-copy looping depends on being able to seek back to a valid point. Non-seekable raw H.264 and video that does not begin on a keyframe can prevent a loop from repeating as expected. Test several joins locally and listen and watch across each transition, rather than checking only the first playback.
If a source cannot seek cleanly or the join is visibly or audibly broken, prepare a seekable intermediate or re-encode as appropriate. Timestamp flags cannot make an invalid seek point or a poor seam into a clean edit. A third-party long-stream guide discusses preparing loop-ready media and one workflow that copies video while re-encoding audio; treat that as a possible troubleshooting lead, not a universal best practice or proof that all live transcodes drift. Its reported drift applies to that workflow, not every FFmpeg stream.

Use timestamp and frame-sync options only for diagnosed timing issues
Fixed offset: measure before using -itsoffset
FFmpeg’s -itsoffset shifts an input’s timestamps by a duration. It may help with a measured, consistent lead or lag, but it is not a general fix for drift that accumulates over time or for a discontinuity at every loop. Apply it only after comparing the input start times and verifying the result over a full cycle.
Frame sync: understand what the selected mode changes
FFmpeg documents video sync modes that can preserve input timestamps or alter frame delivery to meet timing behavior. Passthrough retains demuxer timestamps; constant-frame-rate mode duplicates or drops frames to reach a requested rate; variable-frame-rate mode passes timestamped frames or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps; automatic mode selects according to muxer capability. A muxer may further modify timestamps.

Confirm the syntax, defaults, and per-stream or output scope for the FFmpeg build you actually use. Do not apply a frame-sync mode blindly: dropping or duplicating frames can change the output without addressing mismatched source clocks or a broken loop boundary. The FFmpeg documentation describes these options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the stream over time and check YouTube’s current guidance
- Run a local test that covers several loop joins. Compare audio and video at the start, through the clip, and just after each restart.
- Publish a sustained private or unlisted test stream. Monitor FFmpeg’s output and check playback both near the start and after an extended period.
- Compare the observed sync to your source measurements. If the initial offset is stable, investigate alignment; if it grows, revisit timestamps and timing; if it jumps at repeats, return to the seam and seeking tests.
- Check encoder settings against YouTube’s live encoder help before publishing. Numeric requirements are not included here because the detailed current settings could not be verified from the available page excerpt; avoid relying on old copied command lines.
Common failure patterns and what to check
| What you observe | What to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Audio is offset from the beginning and stays about as far off | Input start times, stream start timestamps, and whether FFmpeg can see a starting timestamp for each input | Measure the offset; test a timestamp shift only if the mismatch is fixed and repeatable. |
| Audio and video separate progressively over time | Timestamp monotonicity, time bases, durations, source-clock assumptions, and the full live encoding workflow | Compare measurements at multiple points; do not expect a fixed offset to correct growing drift. |
| Sync changes abruptly at each repeat | Input-option placement, seekability, keyframe at the loop start, and audio/video loop configuration | Test several local joins; prepare a seekable intermediate or re-encode if the source cannot loop cleanly. |
| Video repeats but separate audio does not | Whether -stream_loop is applied to the audio input as well as the video input |
Configure each input according to whether and when it should repeat. |
| A frame-rate option changes playback but not the underlying sync issue | Whether the problem is a source-clock mismatch, missing timestamps, or a loop seam rather than frame cadence | Recheck input timestamps and test the join before selecting a different sync mode. |
Choose stream copy or re-encoding based on the source
Stream copy avoids re-encoding but does not eliminate seeking and loop-boundary constraints. Re-encoding may be appropriate when preparing a loop-ready intermediate, but it adds processing and must be tested for sustained stability on the actual machine and media. Neither method can be declared the winner without inspecting the source and testing its joins. A benchmark reported by FFmpeg Cookbook for a specific 1080p, 10-second clip and computer is not evidence of long-run sync behavior or performance on other systems.
