How to Prevent Buffering in a 24/7 Worship Stream on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To prevent buffering in a 24/7 worship stream, first find out whether frames are being lost between your encoder and YouTube, or whether viewers are buffering on their own devices and connections. If OBS reports network-dropped frames, reduce the bitrate to one your connection can sustain and check the network path. If OBS is stable but some viewers buffer, consider a lower-bitrate or lower-resolution profile to reach more viewers.

Diagnose which part of the stream is buffering

Check OBS for dropped frames

In OBS, check the stream status and dropped-frame counter while broadcasting. Rising network-dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Do not treat every performance warning as a network problem: distinguish network drops from encoding or rendering issues before changing network settings. OBS explains the difference in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.

Compare viewer reports

If OBS shows no network drops but viewers report buffering, ask which device and network they are using, then compare reports from more than one connection. A problem limited to certain viewers may be on their playback side rather than at the church. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not remove the need for a stable connection from the encoder to YouTube or guarantee smooth playback on every viewer’s network. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide also notes that viewers have different devices, locations, and connection quality.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

Do not set the stream to the highest bitrate a brief speed test appears to allow. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that results in a reliable stream based on your internet connection, and recommends testing upload bitrate. OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. That is a starting estimate, not a guarantee: leave headroom for fluctuations and other network traffic, and assess stability over time.

YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations include these figures for common profiles:

Profile YouTube’s stated bitrate What to keep in mind
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof that your connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended A lower-resolution profile may be more practical when stable upload capacity is limited.

These are the H.264 figures on YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. The page lists other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Match the profile to measured, sustained capacity rather than assuming the recommended ingest bitrate is automatically suitable for your connection.

Verify encoder and YouTube settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, and AV1 codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check the guidance for the supported settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you use rather than applying H.264 figures to a different codec.

If viewers with varied connections are buffering while your outbound stream is stable, test a less demanding profile. Lowering bitrate or output resolution may broaden access, but it reduces image detail; lowering frame rate can also change how motion looks. YouTube’s automatic transcoding helps provide different playback formats, but a high-bitrate source is not necessarily suitable for every viewer.

Work through network problems in order

  1. Reduce the send bitrate if OBS shows network drops. Test upload capacity, choose a bitrate with margin, and lower the video bitrate in OBS under Settings > Output if the current rate is not stable. A one-time speed-test result does not establish sustained stability.
  2. Use a wired connection for the encoder when possible. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Check the Ethernet cable, network adapter, router, and modem if the wired connection is also unreliable. A cable replacement is relevant only if you need a wired link or suspect the existing cable is faulty.
  3. Check software and network changes. OBS identifies VPNs, security software and firewalls, network-prioritization or “optimization” utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible causes of connection trouble. Review recent changes and test carefully before disabling protections or changing network settings.
  4. Use fallback features with care. OBS describes dynamic bitrate adjustment as a fallback that can lower the bitrate to reduce dropped frames. It may help keep the stream going, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce picture quality. OBS also documents network optimizations and TCP pacing for supported Windows configurations; follow its troubleshooting guidance for your setup.
  5. Escalate persistent instability. If the problem continues after checking the encoder and local network, contact your ISP. Congestion or route changes may be outside the church’s control.

See OBS’s full connection troubleshooting steps for details and supported configurations.

Rehearse and monitor the full 24/7 setup

Test after configuration changes and under the conditions in which the stream will actually run. YouTube recommends a pre-event test with audio and video movement similar to the real broadcast, followed by monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. For a worship stream, rehearse the same cameras, scenes, movement, audio, graphics, switching, and internet path used during service. A short test or speed check cannot establish that a 24/7 operation will remain stable.

During the stream, watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages. If broadcaster-side indicators stay healthy but reports of buffering continue, compare affected viewers’ devices and connections and trial a less demanding output profile. After each change, repeat a representative test so you can tell whether the adjustment helped.
