How to Prevent OBS Audio Clipping on a Pre-Recorded YouTube Playlist

Find the audio path, set levels using the loudest track, and use OBS Limiter only when needed. Learn how to troubleshoot clipping and uneven playlist loudness.

To prevent clipping, play the loudest part of the playlist, lower the level at its source, then adjust the OBS mixer fader. If peaks still approach 0 dBFS, add OBS’s Limiter to the captured source and place it last in that source’s filter chain. Record and listen to a test before relying on the setup: a limiter can catch peaks, but it cannot repair audio already clipped in a file or make differently mastered tracks sound equally loud.

Find where the playlist audio enters OBS

The right control depends on the playback path. A playlist loaded into OBS as media has a dedicated source in the mixer. A playlist playing in a browser may instead reach OBS through application audio capture or through a desktop mix that includes other sounds.

Playback path What to check Trade-off
OBS Media Source Check that source’s mixer meter and adjust its source level or OBS fader. Direct routing makes it easier to identify and control the playlist audio. A Media Source is for an individual media file, not a playlist.
OBS VLC Video playlist Check the VLC Video source’s meter and its playback level. It supports playlist controls, including looping and shuffling, but VLC must be installed. OBS’s guide specifies 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
YouTube or another browser playlist Confirm that OBS captures the intended browser/application or desktop audio source, then watch that source’s meter. A desktop mix can include unrelated system sounds, while application capture can isolate the playback. A browser’s volume percentage does not directly indicate OBS level in dBFS.

OBS Media Source documentation lists MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV among its supported audio formats. For details on source types and routing, see the OBS Project’s Media Sources and Sources Guide.

Set a safe level using the loudest material

  1. Start the loudest expected track or section. Do not set levels using only a quiet intro. Include transitions if one track starts before another ends.
  2. Watch the meter for the actual captured source. The OBS Audio Mixer Guide describes red as close to clipping and says the peak-hold indicator shows the loudest level in the previous 20 seconds. The OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Guide explains the meter and its indicators.
  3. Reduce the level as early as you can. Lower the player or media source’s output first, then lower the OBS mixer fader as needed. If the source offers a gain control, it can also be adjusted there. Check the signal in OBS after each change.
  4. Check the complete mix. If other audio sources are active, listen and meter the combined output. Two individually safe sources can sum to an unsafe level.
  5. Record a representative test and listen to the file. Check for distortion, sudden volume jumps and missing or unintended audio. Monitoring helps, but the recording confirms what the output actually sounds like.

Digital full scale is 0 dBFS. OBS can process floating-point audio above 0 dBFS internally, so the presence of a source—or a level reading at one point in the chain—does not prove the final output is safe. The signal reaching the recorded or streamed output must stay below full scale to avoid clipping distortion. The OBS Project explains this in its Audio Mixer Technical Details.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That technical guide also describes a -20 dBFS alignment level and a -9 dBFS permitted maximum level as meter design values. They are not universal targets for every playlist or program source. Leave headroom rather than aiming for the red region, especially when sources may be mixed or later processing may change their levels.

Add a limiter only if level reduction is not enough

  1. Open the captured source’s filters. In the mixer, use that source’s filter menu, or right-click the source and open its filters.
  2. Add the Limiter filter. Confirm that it is attached to the source carrying the playlist audio—not a different source.
  3. Set a ceiling below 0 dBFS. OBS documents a default threshold of -6.00 dB and a release of 60 ms. These are starting defaults, not settings guaranteed to suit every playlist.
  4. Move Limiter to the last position in that source’s filter chain. The OBS Project’s Limiter Filter documentation says, “When using a Limiter it should be the last filter in your chain.”
  5. Play the loudest sections again, then make and review another test recording. If the output still clips, check that the limiter is on the correct source and that the combined mix or a later processing stage is not overloading.

Filters can change a source before it reaches the mixer output; their order matters. See the OBS Project’s Filters Guide for filter-chain setup.

Fix uneven loudness between playlist tracks

A limiter caps excessive peaks; it does not automatically turn down a loud song and raise a quiet one to the same perceived volume. If tracks differ substantially, level-match or normalize the source files in an audio editor before loading them, then check the loudest resulting peaks through OBS again.

Compression can reduce dynamic peaks, but it is not a substitute for track-to-track level matching. It can also cause desktop or program audio to duck when a microphone speaks, depending on how the compressor is configured. The OBS Project’s Compressor Filter documentation describes the filter. The OBS documentation referenced here does not establish an official YouTube LUFS target for a playlist, so there is no single OBS-required LUFS number to apply.

Troubleshoot clipping by its source

What you hear or see Likely point of failure What to do
Distortion is present before OBS processes the signal. The player, source or original file is already overloaded. Lower the player or source level. If the file itself is clipped, use a clean copy if available; lowering gain in OBS cannot reconstruct waveform detail that was lost.
The playlist source’s meter approaches full scale. The source level or OBS fader is too high. Lower the earliest available playback or source control, then the OBS fader. Add a limiter if needed.
Individual source meters seem safe, but the output distorts. Multiple sources may be summing too high, or a later stage may overload. Test the combined recording, reduce contributing source levels and check the output path rather than relying on one source’s meter.
Some songs sound much louder than others, but peaks are contained. The tracks have different overall loudness. Level-match the files before playback. A limiter alone will not equalize perceived loudness.
The browser is audible on the computer but missing or too loud in OBS. OBS may capture the wrong application or desktop mix. Check the selected audio-capture source and meter the signal entering OBS; test the resulting recording.
Clipping continues after adding Limiter. The filter may be on the wrong source, may not be last in the chain, or later summing may exceed the ceiling. Verify its source and position, reduce the upstream level and review the complete output in another test.
