How to Prevent OBS from Stopping a YouTube 24/7 Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reduce OBS disconnections, enable automatic reconnect, set a bitrate your internet connection can sustain consistently, and troubleshoot the network path between your computer and YouTube. Reconnect can recover from some interruptions; it cannot fix an unstable connection, a crashed computer, or a YouTube-side problem.

First, find out what actually stopped

A broadcast ending does not always mean OBS stopped working. Before changing settings, check OBS, YouTube Live Control Room, and any local recording to identify where the interruption occurred.

  • OBS closed or crashed: The encoder itself stopped. Check whether the computer restarted, slept, ran out of resources, or showed an application error.
  • OBS stayed open but reported reconnecting or dropped frames: The outgoing connection may have been interrupted. OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server; that is general troubleshooting guidance, not a diagnosis of a particular setup. See the OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
  • OBS output remained active but YouTube’s event ended: Check the event state and settings in Live Control Room. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control event lifecycle; they do not repair network interruptions. See Manage live stream settings.
  • The broadcast or playback failed on YouTube while OBS was still transmitting: Inspect YouTube’s stream health and messages. The issue may be at YouTube or in the path to its ingest service rather than an OBS crash.

Save the OBS log covering the interruption before restarting or making changes. It can help distinguish an encoder error from a network disconnect. If you record locally, also check whether the recording stopped and whether its file is growing during a test.

Enable OBS automatic reconnect

In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced and find the network or reconnect settings. Confirm that automatic reconnect is enabled, then choose the retry settings offered by your OBS version and output. OBS’s overview guide describes the setting in its Advanced settings: OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Reconnect is a recovery mechanism for supported outputs, not a guarantee of an uninterrupted stream. OBS’s version 32.2.2 API reference documents that, for outputs supporting reconnect, retry wait doubles on each retry to avoid overloading services. The API does not establish a universal default retry count or delay, and its behavior should not be treated as a fixed interval for every retry or plugin. See OBS output API reference.

Make your bitrate sustainable

Use YouTube’s recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, but do not set bitrate based only on the highest speed a speed test briefly reports. The connection needs to sustain the stream, including normal variation. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and the stream before going live; its published bitrate ranges vary by codec and video settings. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the configuration you use.

For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendation table lists these 1080p examples:

H.264 video setting Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream. Other codecs and settings have different recommendations. If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections, lower the bitrate and test again. Reducing resolution or frame rate can also reduce the data demand, at the cost of detail or motion smoothness. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.

Check the connection from your computer to YouTube

Try wired Ethernet if you are streaming over Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi interference or changing signal quality can interrupt a stream even when ordinary browsing seems fine. The OBS Project recommends a wired connection for streaming. Ethernet can improve the local link, but it cannot control your ISP’s connection beyond your home or YouTube availability. If you use Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet as a diagnostic and compare the results before buying anything.

Inspect your router, cable, and network adapter

  • Check whether other devices lose internet access at the same time as the stream.
  • Restart or inspect the modem and router if they show disconnects, overheating, or repeated reboots.
  • Check that Ethernet connectors are seated and try another port or a known-good cable if you have evidence of a faulty cable.
  • Check the computer’s network adapter and drivers, especially if the problem began after a driver or system change.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide discusses Wi-Fi, modems and routers, cables, network cards, and other network devices as possible contributors. A cable purchase is only relevant if Wi-Fi instability or a faulty cable is implicated; no cable can guarantee a continuous stream.

Check software that can interfere with traffic

VPNs and security or network-prioritization software can affect the route or connection. If you suspect one, use only a brief, controlled diagnostic test and restore your normal protections immediately. If the test points to a security product, configure an appropriate exception rather than leaving protection disabled. Follow the OBS Project’s network troubleshooting guidance.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use advanced network options only when they fit the problem

OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing, as well as dynamic bitrate adjustment. These are not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate can lower output quality to adapt to network conditions; it may help avoid disconnects when available bandwidth fluctuates, but it does not repair the underlying link. Consider one option at a time, record the original setting, and compare results in a test stream before relying on it.

Test before leaving a stream unattended

  1. Run a test stream: Check the preview and YouTube stream-health messages before treating the setup as ready.
  2. Monitor picture and sound: Confirm that video, audio, and playback remain usable, not merely that OBS says it is connected.
  3. Check the viewer path: Confirm that the stream is accessible where intended, including any watch-page or privacy settings.
  4. Verify local recording if you use one: Check that the recording file grows during the test and that the saved output is playable.
  5. Test failover if your setup has a backup encoder: YouTube’s live-streaming tips describe testing a backup by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable. Do this during a planned test, not during a broadcast you cannot afford to interrupt.

YouTube recommends preflight testing and monitoring stream health, audio and video quality, accessibility, and local archive-file growth when recording locally. Its guidance is at YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

Plan for YouTube’s archive and event behavior

YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single continuous 24-hour event will be archived in full. Check YouTube’s current guidance for the event you are configuring, and plan how you will handle stream restarts and archive segments if you need a record of a long-running channel. YouTube’s setup information is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Auto-start and auto-stop are separate controls in YouTube’s event settings. They govern whether the encoder can start or stop the event; they do not make OBS reconnect or make an unstable network reliable. See YouTube’s live stream settings help.

Common problems and fixes

What you see Likely area to check What to try
OBS shows dropped frames or repeatedly reconnects Connection between the computer and YouTube ingest Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity, test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, and inspect router, cable, adapter, or interfering software.
OBS stays open, but YouTube’s event ends YouTube event state or lifecycle settings Check Live Control Room and auto-start/auto-stop settings; do not treat them as network-recovery controls.
OBS itself closes or crashes Computer, application, or operating-system stability Preserve the log, check for sleep or restart behavior and system errors, and test the encoder separately from network changes.
Connection holds at a lower bitrate but fails at the old one Configured stream demand exceeds sustainable upload Keep a lower stable bitrate or reduce resolution/frame rate, then test the resulting quality.
A long broadcast has no complete archive YouTube archive-duration behavior Plan around YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive guidance and verify current event policy.
