Looping repeats the whole list; it cannot prevent episodes from recurring on later cycles. Choose the OBS source that matches your playlist
OBS offers two relevant sources for local video playback. The right choice depends on whether you need one file or a sequence of files.

For a sequence of episodes, use VLC Video. The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, describes these controls; check the controls in the version of OBS you have installed rather than assuming the interface is unchanged. OBS Media Sources documentation
Set up an ordered, continuously playing playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS needs VLC installed for the VLC Video source to be available.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will use for the stream.
- Add the episode files in the intended order. Review the list before going live; its order is the order viewers will see when shuffle is off.
- Turn off Shuffle Playlist. This preserves the listed sequence instead of randomizing it.
- Choose whether to loop. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the final file. Disable it if the stream should stop when the list ends.
- Inspect the settings and test playback. OBS documents loop as on and shuffle as off by default, but verify both controls directly. Play through the start and end of the sequence to confirm the order and the transition you expect.
OBS describes the loop setting as specifying whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files. That setting controls what happens after the final item; it does not suppress repeats once the list begins again.

Audit the playlist to reduce unwanted repeats
- Remove duplicate entries. If an episode should appear only once before the list cycles, make sure its file is listed only once.
- Check the sequence deliberately. With shuffle off, playback follows the configured order. Confirm that the list has the intended episodes and that their order makes sense.
- Review the final-to-first transition. With looping on, the first episode follows the last one. A planned transition can make the cycle feel intentional, but no loop setting can prevent episodes from recurring on future cycles.
- Decide what “no repeats” means. A finite playlist that runs continuously must eventually start over if looping is enabled. To avoid repetition within one cycle, use each intended episode once; to avoid recurrence altogether, do not loop the list.
Check YouTube’s audience, rights, and live-stream requirements
Set the audience accurately
YouTube requires creators to say whether content, including live streams, is made for kids. Set the audience accurately in YouTube Studio; YouTube says not to rely on automated systems to make this decision. Review the setting as part of the stream checklist. Plan around made-for-kids feature limits
YouTube lists restrictions for made-for-kids content, including live chat, comments, notification features, personalized ads, and saving to playlists. Its Help guidance also says that a made-for-kids video or channel cannot be added to a playlist from a homepage, while content can still be added from search results. Confirm rights and follow platform policies
Before scheduling the stream, confirm that you have the necessary rights for every episode and for any music included in it. YouTube’s live-stream terms say live content must comply with the Community Guidelines and that providers need the applicable rights for their live content. Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days to enable livestreaming. YouTube describes encoder, webcam, mobile, and console workflows; it does not require one particular method for this playlist setup. Understand the monetization risk of repetitive playback
A July 10, 2025 TeamYouTube response said YouTube clarified that its monetization guidance covers mass-produced or repetitive content, renamed the policy “inauthentic content,” and applies it regardless of how content was made. A livestream that repeatedly plays existing episodes is not automatically eligible for monetization simply because it is live; channel and content eligibility remain subject to YouTube review. Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video is missing from OBS: Install VLC, then check OBS again. OBS requires VLC for this source.
- Episodes play in an unexpected order: Check that Shuffle Playlist is off and inspect the order of files in the source’s playlist.
- The stream stops at the end of the list: Enable Loop Playlist if you want the playlist to start over. If it is off, the sequence is not configured to loop.
- An episode plays twice before the list restarts: Look for duplicate entries in the configured playlist. Looping itself restarts the sequence only after its final file.
- Viewers cannot use an expected feature: Check whether the content is marked made for kids and review YouTube’s restrictions for that feature.
- YouTube will not enable the live stream: Check channel verification and whether a live-stream restriction occurred in the previous 90 days, then consult YouTube’s current setup guidance.
