To “program” a Wii controller, you usually need to synchronize—or sync—the Wii Remote with the console. On a Wii or Wii mini, press SYNC on the remote and then SYNC inside the console’s SD Card compartment. On Wii U, start from the HOME Menu’s Controller Settings.

Sync a Wii Remote with a Wii or Wii mini

  1. Turn on the console.
  2. Open the SD Card slot cover on the front of the console.
  3. Remove the Wii Remote’s battery cover to access its SYNC button. Some remote models have an access hole in the cover and a tool on the wrist strap.
  4. Press and release SYNC on the remote. The Player LEDs will blink.
  5. Quickly press and release SYNC inside the console’s SD Card compartment.
  6. Wait for the remote’s blinking to stop. The lit Player LED indicates its player number. To connect another remote, repeat the sequence for that remote.

Nintendo says, “When the Player LED blinking stops, the syncing is complete.” Nintendo Support’s standard synchronization instructions cover this process.

Pair a Wii Remote with Wii U

  1. Open the GamePad’s HOME Menu.
  2. Select Controller Settings.
  3. Under Wii Remote/Other Controllers, select Pair.
  4. Press SYNC on the Wii Remote and follow the on-screen instructions.

Nintendo notes that some screens or applications may prevent you from opening the HOME Menu. If you cannot access it, exit that screen or application and try again. See Nintendo’s Wii U pairing instructions.

If the remote blinks but will not connect

Try these checks in order. The remote’s SYNC buttons establish the connection; the Sensor Bar is used for pointer tracking, so an issue with pointing does not necessarily mean pairing failed.

FASIGO Remote Controller with Nunchuck, Compatible with Nintendo Wii/Wii U
  • Experience intuitive motion controls that deliver a unique social activity for the whole family.
  • Every remote controller undergoes a rigorous inspection to ensure that each one is unparalleled.
  • Easy synchronization by pressing the red sync button on both remote controller and console. Powered by 2 AA batteries(not included).
  • Up to 4 remote controller can be connected at once by using built-in wireless technology powered by bluetooth.

  1. Replace or recharge the batteries. The Wii Remote uses two AA batteries. Nintendo recommends Nickel Metal Hydride for rechargeable cells. Then retry the appropriate sync steps. Nintendo’s battery information has details.
  2. Reset the remote’s power. Remove its batteries for one minute, reinstall them, and try syncing again. Nintendo also suggests power-cycling the console before another attempt. Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps describe these checks.
  3. Check the Sensor Bar if pointer control is the problem. Confirm that it is connected, its cable is undamaged, and it is positioned above or below the television. During initial setup, choose the matching Sensor Bar position. Nintendo’s Wii Remote troubleshooting guide covers Sensor Bar checks; its connection and placement instructions explain positioning.
  4. Improve pointer conditions. For Wii and Wii mini pointer use, stay about 3 to 10 feet from the TV and clear obstructions. Move bright or infrared light sources away from the area; Nintendo lists sunlight, reflective surfaces, flames, and heaters as possible sources of interference. These checks concern pointing, not the button-based sync sequence.
  5. Check the remote model. Nintendo lists Wii Remote RVL-003 and Wii Remote Plus RVL-036 as licensed models. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guide includes model information.
  6. Test another remote, if available. If another one works, Nintendo says the original remote may need replacement. If neither works, the console or Sensor Bar may be involved. This comparison helps narrow down the fault; it does not by itself identify which console component needs attention.

Syncing is not the same as pointer tracking

A remote can be synchronized even if its pointer does not behave correctly. Syncing uses the SYNC buttons on the remote and console; pointer use depends on a connected, properly positioned Sensor Bar. During initial setup, select whether the bar is above or below the TV to match its actual position. See Nintendo’s Sensor Bar setup instructions.
