Before you enter a risky area, check exactly what death can cost, move valuables into storage the game documents as safe, and carry only what you are prepared to lose. Plan your exit using the game’s actual mechanics rather than assuming logout makes you safe.
First, find the death rule for your exact game and mode
Check the game’s current official rules or support guide for the mode you intend to play. Identify what happens to carried gear, inventory, stored items, experience, account progression, and any lives or other mode-specific resources. A rule for one mode—or a past event—does not establish the rule for another.
For example, Jagex’s 2021 Old School RuneScape Deadman: Reborn announcement described event rules under which a PvP death cost a life and carried items, with additional bank losses in specified circumstances. Those were rules for that event, not a general description of current RuneScape death mechanics.
Mode can change the stakes even within one game. Jagex describes Hardcore Ironman as a mode where death in a non-safe activity can make the account unplayable. Check the current description and rules for your chosen mode before risking progress.

Separate lasting progress from loot you are carrying
Make a simple inventory of what you want to protect. Distinguish account-linked progression from items physically on your character, then confirm whether each category survives death, stays on a body, can be recovered, or becomes available to other players. Do not assume that a persistent account, stash, bank, or base is protected unless the game’s rules say so.
The distinction varies by game. An Escape from DayZ guide says account-linked reputation, trader access, tasks, stash, base, and skills remain, while ordinary carried gear can remain on the body. That is a game-specific example, not a rule to apply elsewhere; consult the current guide for the game you play.

Use only storage or protection the game documents
Look for the game’s named storage or protection system and read its limits: which items it covers, when protection applies, any capacity or access requirements, and whether it works in your selected mode. A feature that protects stored items may not protect items carried into PvP, and protection against one type of death may not apply to another.
Examples from separate games illustrate why the details matter. Decimated support describes looted or scavenged gear as at risk until protected through its vault system. Roberts Space Industries Support says that, in Star Citizen, safely stored items in a landing zone are retained after death; it states, “Items lost will be only what you were carrying at the time of death and anything safely stored in a landing zone will be retained.” Neither rule applies outside its own game.

Prepare a loadout you can afford to lose
- Move valuables into verified safe storage. Confirm the item is actually stored and that the storage protects it under the death rules for this mode.
- Choose your kit deliberately. Carry what the activity requires, but leave behind items whose loss would derail your next session or compromise a longer-term goal.
- Check the current risk conditions. Look for mode, event, seasonal, or update-specific rules that change what death removes.
- Set your loss limit before the fight. Decide what you are willing to risk and stop adding valuable items to the loadout just because they are available.
There is no reliable cross-game statistic for how often players lose loot or how much any protection tactic reduces losses. The useful decision is specific to your game: weigh the items covered, the circumstances covered, access and capacity limits, and the cost of replacing anything exposed.
Plan a safe exit; do not rely on logout
Use the game’s documented extraction, retreat, or recovery system. Logging out is not necessarily a safe exit: the current Escape from DayZ guide says a character’s body remains in the world after logout, and remains there longer after combat. Verify the rule in the game you are playing before treating a disconnect or logout as protection.

Keep account security separate from PvP protection
Account security can protect stored wealth from someone taking over your account, but it does not necessarily change what happens when your character dies in PvP. Jagex’s Bank PIN guidance describes a PIN as protection for stored wealth from account hijackers. It is useful account security, not evidence that carried loot survives an in-game death.
