FFmpeg sends your video to a MediaMTX path, and MediaMTX forwards that path to YouTube. YouTube’s current ingest URL and stream key come from the active stream’s settings in YouTube Studio; use RTMPS, keep both audio and video tracks in the forwarded feed, and test the complete route before relying on it.
How the stream gets from FFmpeg to YouTube
This setup has two separate connections: FFmpeg publishes to MediaMTX, then MediaMTX forwards the stream to YouTube. That separation makes it easier to locate problems: first confirm MediaMTX receives the FFmpeg feed, then check the forwarding destination and YouTube ingest.
- FFmpeg → MediaMTX: FFmpeg sends an RTMP stream to a MediaMTX path such as
mystream. - MediaMTX → YouTube: MediaMTX forwards that path to the current YouTube RTMPS ingest URL, combined with the stream key for the active YouTube stream.
This is useful for a game capture, recorded gameplay, or another supported input that FFmpeg can encode or relay. It does not make YouTube content policy requirements go away: use material you have the rights to stream, and do not assume that repeatedly broadcasting reused footage will qualify for monetization. YouTube’s live streaming help and channel monetization policies are the places to check current rules.
1. Create the YouTube stream and copy its current credentials
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream you intend to use. YouTube describes these as the server URL and key to enter in an encoder; the key identifies where the encoder should send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Keep the key private. Do not publish it in a screenshot, public configuration file, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update MediaMTX’s forwarding destination.
Use the URL currently displayed in Studio rather than copying an old hostname from an example. YouTube’s ingest details can change, and the MediaMTX documentation explicitly treats its sample host as a historical example, not a guaranteed current destination.

-rereads a file at its native playback rate; it is appropriate for file playback, not a blanket requirement for every live input.-stream_loop -1repeats the file indefinitely.-c copycopies the input audio and video codecs rather than encoding them again. It works only if the source tracks are suitable for the receiving workflow. If they are not, choose an encoding configuration that YouTube currently supports rather than assuming stream copy will convert them.-f flvselects the FLV container used for this RTMP publishing example.rtmp://localhost:1935/mystreamtargets the local MediaMTX RTMP listener and path. Replacelocalhostif MediaMTX runs on another host, and keep the path consistent with the MediaMTX configuration.
For a live capture or another non-file source, use that source’s appropriate FFmpeg input and remove file-playback options that do not apply. The important checkpoint is that MediaMTX receives the intended audio and video tracks at the path you plan to forward.
3. Configure MediaMTX to forward the path to YouTube
In the matching MediaMTX paths entry, configure a forward destination for the YouTube stream. The destination pattern documented by MediaMTX is:

rtmps://<current-youtube-ingest-host>/<path>#<stream-key>
Replace the host and path with the values from the current YouTube Studio stream URL, and place the corresponding stream key after #. Use the current MediaMTX configuration syntax for your installed version; do not treat a sample host such as a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2 as a permanent endpoint. MediaMTX explains the forwarding pattern in its YouTube forwarding documentation.
RTMPS encrypts the connection in transit and is the recommended transport for the YouTube leg. Do not copy an old certificate fingerprint or disable certificate checking merely because an older documentation example mentioned a certificate issue: verify TLS behavior against the current endpoint and the MediaMTX version you are running.

4. Confirm audio, video, and encoder compatibility
YouTube’s MediaMTX guidance says both audio and video tracks must be present; a video-only forwarded stream can be silently rejected. Preserve an audio track even if the program is intended to be silent. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Resolution and frame rate: Select a mode supported by the source and sustainable on the actual upload connection.
- Bitrate: YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 8 Mbps at 720p60; its listed minimums for those modes are 5 Mbps and 3 Mbps, respectively. For AV1 or H.265, the recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 720p60. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular network or encoder will deliver a stable stream.
- Keyframes and rate control: Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where your encoder permits it; avoid intervals longer than four seconds.
- Audio: Verify the outgoing stream actually contains an AAC or MP3 audio track, including for silent content.
Higher resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates need more upload capacity. Leave headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full measured connection rate, then use YouTube’s stream-health feedback to judge the result.

5. Test the entire path before a long broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and confirm that MediaMTX receives the stream at the intended path.
- Confirm MediaMTX’s forwarding destination uses the URL and key belonging to the active YouTube stream.
- Check YouTube Studio’s preview, stream health, and any warnings while representative motion and audio are playing.
- Only rely on the setup after the end-to-end test succeeds; a successful FFmpeg-to-MediaMTX connection alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving the forwarded stream.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| No YouTube preview or ingest rejection | The forwarded feed may lack an audio track, even if video is present. | Inspect the tracks reaching MediaMTX and ensure both audio and video are forwarded. MediaMTX documents that video-only streams may be silently rejected. |
| MediaMTX receives FFmpeg, but YouTube does not | The output leg may have the wrong destination, path, or key. | Verify the FFmpeg input reaches the intended MediaMTX path, then compare the forwarding destination and key with the active stream settings in YouTube Studio. |
| The stream key no longer works or may be exposed | The key may have been reset, mismatched, or compromised. | Reset it in YouTube Studio, update the MediaMTX destination, and keep the replacement private. |
| Unstable ingest or poor quality | The selected bitrate may exceed what the upload connection can sustain, or the encoder settings may not suit the source. | Choose a sustainable mode and bitrate, run a representative test, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| TLS or certificate error | An old endpoint or certificate observation may no longer apply. | Check the current YouTube RTMPS URL and verify certificate behavior for the current endpoint and MediaMTX version. Do not copy an outdated exception blindly. |
