To randomize prerecorded videos in a 24/7 YouTube live stream, add them to an OBS Studio VLC Video source, turn on Shuffle Playlist and leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS sends that shuffled media to YouTube Live through an encoder connection. This is different from shuffling a playlist on a YouTube watch page: the method below randomizes local media files, not a YouTube-hosted playlist URL.
Set up a shuffled playlist in OBS
1. Prepare your video files
Keep the prerecorded videos accessible to the computer running OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. OBS documents media sources for Windows, macOS and Linux.
2. Add a VLC Video source and load the files
- Open the OBS scene that will carry the stream.
- In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. This source supports a playlist of media items; the standard Media Source is for a single file and its documented Loop option repeats that file.
- Open the source’s playlist controls and add the video files you want OBS to play.

3. Turn on shuffle and looping
In the VLC Video source properties, enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. Shuffle is off by default; Loop Playlist is on by default. Shuffle tells OBS to randomize the media files rather than play them in file-list order. OBS does not specify a guaranteed order, a different order on every loop, or a rule that every item appears exactly once per cycle, so do not rely on those behaviors.

Send the playlist to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection flow.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room and follow its prompt to go live.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so activate the channel ahead of a scheduled launch. Keep the stream key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to the channel.
Understand what is shuffled—and what is not
The OBS playlist is the source media that the encoder transmits. A playlist on a YouTube watch page is a viewer-facing collection, not a source OBS can shuffle merely by being given its URL. The documented shuffle control applies to media files in the VLC Video source.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a stream, the incoming audio-video transmission, from a broadcast, the watchable YouTube video. The distinction matters for channel workflows: the live feed and the individual watch page are separate resources. See YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
Plan for a 24/7 feed and its archive separately
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise an archive for one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. If you need dependable replays of individual videos or segments, plan a separate recording and publishing workflow rather than assuming the continuous live feed will create a replay.

Shuffling also does not grant permission to rebroadcast the files. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for each video and its audio before sending it live. Copyright restrictions and YouTube’s rules still apply to prerecorded material.
When HLS settings matter
HLS is not required to shuffle a VLC playlist. Only configure it if your encoder is specifically sending an HLS feed. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance requires compatible encoder output and specific segment settings; it also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as one continuous stream.

Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Only one video repeats: Check that the files were added to a VLC Video playlist, not a single-file Media Source. The latter’s Loop option repeats one file.
- Videos play in list order: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Shuffle Playlist.
- The playlist stops after the final file: Enable Loop Playlist so the source restarts after reaching the end.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Verify the server URL and stream key in OBS against the stream selected in Live Control Room, then inspect YouTube’s preview and health status.
- A first broadcast is not available yet: YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours; allow time for activation before relying on the stream.
