How to Read a Baseball Pitching Matchup Before a Playoff Game

A practical guide to reading playoff pitching matchups: verify the starters and lineups, understand what key stats measure, and keep season and postseason samples distinct.

To read a playoff pitching matchup, first confirm the actual starters and batting orders, then compare each pitcher’s run-prevention results with the events behind them. ERA, FIP, WHIP, strikeout-to-walk rate and efficiency each answer different questions; none predicts a game on its own. Finally, account for lineup fit, relief options and the small size of postseason samples.

Confirm the starters and lineups first

A matchup is only as current as its inputs. Check the game date and venue, verify both starting pitchers, and use the confirmed batting orders when available. Probable pitchers can change, and a lineup’s handedness and hitter mix affect which opponents a starter will actually face. Season-long numbers describe past performance; the announced lineup makes the comparison specific to this game.

Until those details are confirmed, avoid calling one pitcher a clear matchup advantage. A starter’s performance against left- or right-handed hitters, or against a particular pitch type, needs current supporting data and the actual opposing hitters to be meaningful.

Read run prevention and the events behind it

ERA: what happened on the scoreboard

Earned run average (ERA) reports earned runs allowed per nine innings. It is a useful summary of run prevention, but it records outcomes rather than isolating the events a pitcher most directly controls.

FIP: a narrower view of pitcher events

Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is designed to resemble ERA while focusing on strikeouts, walks, hit batters and home runs, rather than outcomes on balls hit into the field of play. MLB’s FIP glossary explains the measure. If a pitcher’s ERA and FIP differ, treat the gap as a prompt to investigate context—not as proof that the pitcher’s results will soon change.

Use ERA and FIP together: ERA describes earned-run results, while FIP gives a more focused view of selected events. Neither one tells the whole story of a particular start.

Use WHIP, strikeouts and walks to describe traffic and command

WHIP is walks plus hits divided by innings pitched. MLB’s WHIP glossary defines the statistic and its components. WHIP does not count hit batters, errors or fielder’s choices, and it does not show how damaging each hit was. It is therefore a measure of certain kinds of baserunner traffic, not a complete account of how often a pitcher lets runners reach base.

Pair WHIP with strikeouts and walks rather than treating it as a standalone profile. Strikeouts show how often a pitcher finishes a plate appearance without relying on a ball put in play; walks show one way a hitter can reach without a hit. The balance between them adds command context that WHIP alone cannot provide.

Put the numbers in league and efficiency context

When available, ERA+ adjusts ERA for league and park factors. MLB’s team statistics explainer uses 100 as league average, so the number provides a normalized reference rather than another raw run total.

The same MLB explainer defines K/BB as strikeouts divided by walks and pitches per inning as an efficiency measure. K/BB helps frame the strikeout-to-walk balance; pitches per inning indicates how many pitches a pitcher has needed, on average, to record an inning. Neither establishes how long that pitcher will last in a playoff start. Workload, game conditions and the manager’s plan still matter.

Compare the starters on equal terms

When both starters are known, compare the same season or other clearly labeled span and the same level of competition. A compact comparison should keep unlike measures distinct:

Question Useful measure What it tells you
How many earned runs did the pitcher allow? ERA Run-prevention results per nine innings.
How did selected pitcher-controlled events look? FIP A view centered on strikeouts, walks, hit batters and home runs.
How often did hits and walks put runners on? WHIP Hits plus walks per inning, with the exclusions described above.
How did strikeouts compare with walks? K/BB Strikeouts divided by walks.
How much work has the pitcher completed, and at what pitch pace? Innings and pitches per inning Past workload and efficiency context, not a forecast of a specific start.
How do the actual hitters fit? Confirmed lineup and handedness Game-specific context to investigate; it cannot be inferred from the pitcher’s season line alone.
What support is available after the starter? Reliever availability Potential game context that must be checked for the particular matchup.

Label every figure with its period. A full-season number and a brief postseason line are not equivalent samples; presenting them side by side without saying so can make the comparison misleading.

Account for the rest of the game

A playoff pitching matchup is not just two season stat lines. The opposing lineup, pitcher handedness and repertoire, likely workload, available relievers, venue and conditions can all affect how those historical numbers apply. Check current, game-specific information before claiming that a starter has a platoon or pitch-type edge, or that one team has the better bullpen support. Without verified details for the particular game, those advantages are not established.

Keep postseason statistics in perspective

Postseason game information sheets can report appearances, innings, ERA, strikeouts, walks and WHIP together. An MLB game information sheet illustrates that kind of game-specific reporting. Such a sheet is useful context, but a short postseason record should remain labeled as a short postseason sample and should not outweigh a full-season record by default.
