Check the official NFL Inactives page about 90 minutes before the specific game’s scheduled kickoff. That game-day list confirms who is inactive; an earlier injury designation such as Questionable or Doubtful does not.
When NFL inactive lists come out
NFL Support says teams designate players inactive about 90 minutes before a game is scheduled to start when a player is unable to play. NFL Football Operations places the club’s inactive list in its Game Day Administration Report, delivered at the 90-minute meeting.
Use the kickoff time for the game you care about: games on the same day can have different start times and therefore different inactive-list windows. The NFL does not state an exact refresh latency for its public page, so check near the 90-minute mark and allow for the page to update.
Where to confirm a player’s status
- Find the game’s scheduled kickoff time.
- Open the official NFL Inactives page near 90 minutes before kickoff.
- Look for the player on that game’s inactive list. Use this game-day designation to confirm whether the player is inactive.
The injury report is useful context, but it is not a substitute for the final game-day list.

Questionable, Doubtful and Out are injury-report statuses
The NFL defines Questionable as uncertainty about whether a player will participate, Doubtful as unlikely participation and Out as not playing. These are game-status designations, not the same thing as checking the club’s inactive list. A Questionable or Doubtful player is not confirmed inactive by that label alone; consult the game-day list for the actual designation.

How many players are inactive?
The NFL’s 2024 Record and Fact Book says a team can have 47 active players, or 48 if it has at least eight offensive linemen. Five or six inactive players complete the 53-player roster. These roster counts provide context only: they do not indicate which players will be inactive for a particular game.
