Use Live Control Room to see what is happening now, then review the stream’s video-level Analytics in YouTube Studio to understand discovery, viewing depth and audience over time. Read impressions and click-through rate alongside views, watch time and concurrent viewers: no single metric explains how a 24/7 prerecorded stream is performing.
Which YouTube report should you use?

YouTube’s live-stream help documentation describes these reports for live streams generally; it does not define a separate benchmark or formula for prerecorded streams running continuously. Treat any comparisons or scorecards as your own method, not a special YouTube rule.
Check the live stream while it is running
Open Live Control Room to check stream health and real-time indicators. Concurrent viewers is the number of people watching simultaneously at a point in time; it is not the number of distinct people who watched over the whole period. Peak concurrent viewers is the highest simultaneous audience reached during the stream. YouTube explains the real-time metrics in its live-stream metrics guide.
Use the live count to answer “How many viewers are here now?” and stream health to diagnose whether the broadcast is reaching YouTube correctly. Do not compare a momentary concurrent-viewer count with total views or watch time: those measure different things.

Review the individual stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Content, then select Live.
- Select the stream you want to review and open its Analytics.
- Choose a date range that matches the question you are investigating. For a continuously running stream, state whether the figures cover a day, week, month or another interval rather than implying they represent the entire stream.
- Review the available live reports, including average and peak concurrent viewers, audience-retention key moments, watch time, traffic sources and device reports.
YouTube says related metrics become available within minutes after a stream ends, but Analytics figures are processed and despammed and may differ from Live Control Room. Analytics is based on the video ID and measures different information from Control Room. For details, see YouTube’s live-stream metrics documentation.
YouTube’s Studio interface is also changing: an updated Analytics experience is gradually rolling out starting July 2026. Labels and navigation can therefore differ between accounts; use the selected stream’s Analytics and the relevant report rather than relying on a single fixed layout.
Read discovery separately from viewing depth
Reach and packaging
Impressions measure thumbnail exposure on YouTube. Impressions click-through rate (CTR) indicates how often people watched after seeing the thumbnail. Check the two together: CTR without impression volume does not show how broadly the stream was surfaced, and neither metric alone establishes whether the stream held viewers. YouTube’s Live content analytics guidance frames performance in terms of appeal, engagement and satisfaction.

Starts and viewing depth
Views show starts, while average view duration and watch time help describe what happened after people arrived. Read them together. For example, a change in views alongside a change in average view duration can indicate a different pattern from a rise in views with stable viewing duration. These are clues to investigate, not a platform-published diagnosis of why viewers behaved as they did.

Traffic sources
Use the traffic-source report to see whether viewers found the stream through sources such as YouTube Search, Suggested videos, Browse, direct or unknown, channel pages, external sources or playlists. A source mix can help you decide whether to investigate the title and thumbnail, discoverability, or how the stream is shared, but it does not by itself prove what caused a change.
YouTube recommends comparing content of the same format because audience behavior differs across formats. Compare similar streams or equivalent periods where possible, and include the chosen date range and context. YouTube’s Live content analytics tips provide its guidance on impressions, CTR and format-aware comparisons.

Interpret concurrent viewers and watch time together
Average concurrent viewers describes the average simultaneous audience; peak concurrent viewers is the maximum simultaneous audience. Neither is a substitute for views or watch time. Pair them with average view duration to distinguish a stream that draws many starts from one that sustains a simultaneous audience, while remembering that these figures answer different questions.
- Reach: impressions, views and traffic sources.
- Thumbnail response: impressions CTR, considered alongside impression volume.
- Viewing depth: watch time and average view duration.
- Simultaneous audience: average and peak concurrent viewers.
- Audience context: device and geography reports, with attention to their limits and selected filters.
This is a practical way to organize the reports, not a YouTube-defined 24/7 scorecard or a benchmark for prerecorded live streams.
Check filters, missing reports and audience context
Know which figures you are viewing
Control Room real-time figures and Analytics figures can differ because Analytics is processed and despammed and is based on the video ID. Avoid treating a difference between them as an error without first checking which report and time span you are comparing.

Some reports may not appear under the Live filter
YouTube says some interaction and revenue reports are unavailable when Analytics is filtered to Live. If a report is missing, select Live & on demand or another appropriate report view, as YouTube’s live-stream metrics guide directs.
Use channel audience reports as context, not stream attribution
Audience reports can show device type, top geographies and when viewers were on YouTube in the previous 28 days. Check the selected content type and date range before applying that context to one stream. YouTube notes that some data, including geography and traffic-source data, may be limited. YouTube says that beginning August 24, 2026, a view is counted when a video starts to play across formats, including live streams. If a comparison spans that date, annotate it: a change in view counts across the transition may not be a like-for-like comparison. Do not infer a performance change from views alone.
