To recover an FFmpeg YouTube Live stream after a brief output-network failure, wrap the FLV output in FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer and enable recovery. This lets a still-running FFmpeg process retry the output connection; it cannot restart FFmpeg if the process exits, and retries do not guarantee that no stream gap occurs.
Enable recovery for the YouTube output
FFmpeg’s documented FIFO example enables output recovery and retries at one-second intervals. Adapt the input, codecs, stream mapping and destination to your existing setup. YouTube provides the stream URL and stream key through its encoder workflow; keep the key secret.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-map 0:v -map 0:a
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
'rtmps://DESTINATION/STREAM_KEY'
The FIFO options wrap the output in a recovery-capable queue while retaining FLV as the underlying format. Replace INPUT and the example destination with your actual source and YouTube RTMP(S) address. Do not paste a placeholder address into a production command, or expose a real stream key in shell history, logs or a public script. FFmpeg’s official example demonstrates FIFO recovery with an RTMP URL; YouTube’s encoder workflow supplies the URL and key. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Choose what happens when the queue fills
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 allows encoding to continue by dropping packets if the FIFO queue fills. That may keep processing moving, but the missing packets mean missing media in the stream. Without dropping, FFmpeg may block while waiting for the muxer, depending on the configuration; if the queue fills, processing can stall. Choose deliberately: dropping favors continued real-time processing at the cost of a gap, while blocking preserves queued packets only while there is room.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Verify options in your installed FFmpeg build
Before relying on the command, check the installed binary’s FIFO options with:
ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo
Options such as -recover_any_error, -max_recovery_attempts and -restart_with_keyframe affect which failures qualify, how many attempts are made and keyframe handling. Confirm that your version supports them and understand their behavior before adding them; defaults and support should not be assumed across builds. Test the exact command during a controlled outage on a private or unlisted stream before production. This configuration is an example, not a tested command for your particular input, FFmpeg build or YouTube channel.

What to do when the connection returns
- Confirm connectivity and process status. Check that the streaming machine has internet access again, then verify that the FFmpeg process is still running.
- Review FFmpeg’s output or logs. If the process is alive, let its configured FIFO recovery attempts proceed. If FFmpeg exited or reports a terminal output error, restart the encoder with the existing YouTube stream URL and key.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm the stream preview and health after reconnection, then verify audio and video. YouTube recommends testing streams and monitoring stream health.
- If YouTube rejects a restart, check the ingest details. Make sure the encoder has the current stream URL and key. YouTube’s third-party encoder troubleshooting guidance directs creators encountering a startup error to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Why HTTP reconnect flags do not fix an RTMP output drop
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, -reconnect_at_eof and -reconnect_on_network_error apply to HTTP input-side behavior. They are not the recovery mechanism for an RTMP output push to YouTube. For this output failure, configure recovery around the output with the FIFO muxer instead.
Keep ingest settings and recovery settings separate
YouTube’s encoder settings describe ingest compatibility and stream quality; they do not promise to restore a dropped network connection. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, in its live encoder settings guidance. It also recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health and having sufficient outbound capacity with 20% headroom. Extra upload capacity can help avoid an overloaded connection, but it cannot restore a disconnected network path.

When one FFmpeg process is not enough
FIFO recovery operates inside one running FFmpeg process. If the process exits, an operator or a separately configured process supervisor must start it again. A retry option is not process supervision.
If interruptions are costly, separately plan and test redundancy. YouTube describes testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verifying player rollover. A backup encoder is a separate resilience design, not an extension of FIFO retries. A cellular hotspot or router may offer another network path only if coverage is adequate, sustained upload capacity is sufficient, data allowances work for your use, and the path is genuinely separate; these are practical considerations, not a YouTube endorsement of a particular product.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a local FFmpeg machine running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud. The setup is three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video; it does not go live from a camera.
