For a temporary RTMP output failure, wrap FFmpeg’s FLV output in its FIFO muxer and enable recovery. If FFmpeg exits, a separate supervisor must restart it; if YouTube rejects the key, endpoint, or event, retries alone will not fix the problem. These are different failures and need different responses.
Reconnect FFmpeg after a temporary publishing failure
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer runs the output muxer in a separate thread and can restart that output after a failure. Its documented RTMP example uses a one-second retry interval and retries indefinitely. Replace the input and destination below with your programme source and the current event’s YouTube ingest URL and stream key:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
This is FFmpeg’s documented example pattern, not a guarantee that every YouTube disconnect will recover. FIFO recovery is off by default; its default recovery wait is five seconds, and the default maximum recovery attempts is zero, meaning unlimited successive attempts. The command explicitly enables recovery and sets a one-second wait.
Choose what happens while output is unavailable
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 tells FIFO to drop packets if its queue fills, allowing the input timeline and encoding to continue at the cost of missing packets during a prolonged output failure. Without that option, encoding can block when the queue fills. Pick the behavior deliberately for your content, and use an intentional retry policy and useful logs for your installation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the stream key private
Get the URL and key for the actual event from YouTube Live Control Room. Do not publish them in a script, log, screenshot, or support post. Treat them as changeable event settings rather than permanent values copied from an old tutorial.
Know which kind of disconnect you have
| What happened | What to do | What recovery cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| A temporary output or network write failure while FFmpeg remains running | Use FIFO output recovery and check FFmpeg logs. | It cannot make a persistent network outage disappear. |
| FFmpeg terminated | Use a host-level supervisor or wrapper to restart the process, log its exit status, and avoid rapid restart loops. | FIFO recovery cannot restart a process that has exited. |
| YouTube rejects the connection or ends the event | Check the current event’s URL, protocol, key, Live Control Room status, and messages before continuing. | Repeated retries cannot repair invalid credentials, an unreachable destination, a server-side stop, or an event-state change. |
The right supervisor configuration depends on the host—such as Linux/systemd, Windows, macOS, or a container runtime. There is no single cross-platform service configuration here. An operating-system restart policy is separate from FFmpeg’s protocol and muxer options.

Do not confuse HTTP input reconnect flags with RTMP output recovery
FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_at_eof, -reconnect_on_network_error, and -reconnect_on_http_error for the HTTP protocol. They apply to HTTP operations, commonly an HTTP input; they are not a general fix for a failed RTMP publishing output. For this output-side problem, use the FIFO muxer’s recovery options instead.
Check YouTube’s ingest settings and stream health
Use the current event endpoint
YouTube Live supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Get the event’s current URL and key from Live Control Room. To display the RTMPS URL, YouTube says to select the lock icon in Stream settings. For connection timeouts or SSL errors, check the URL, protocol, server, and port. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Match encoder settings to the actual connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the available upload connection, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. It lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select settings for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming a bitrate based on an Indian music channel’s country or genre.
| H.264 output mode | YouTube’s published minimum | YouTube’s published recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current published encoder figures, accessed in 2026—not measurements of your channel’s upload capacity. Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and test with audio and movement similar to the intended programme.

Troubleshoot repeated reconnect attempts
- FFmpeg keeps retrying, but never reconnects: confirm that the destination is reachable and that the URL, protocol, port, and key match the current event. Inspect Live Control Room for event status and messages.
- FFmpeg stops retrying because it exited: inspect its exit status and logs, then configure a host-level supervisor or wrapper with a delay or other loop protection. FIFO cannot recover a dead process.
- Connection times out or reports an SSL error: verify the current event’s endpoint and whether the selected RTMP or RTMPS protocol, server, and port agree.
- The stream continues but has gaps after an outage: with packet dropping enabled, missing packets are an expected trade-off if FIFO’s queue overflows. Without dropping, a full queue can block encoding instead.
- The stream connects but YouTube reports poor health: test the intended audio and motion, check stream health, and lower the selected output quality if your measured upload connection cannot sustain it reliably.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded music programme that should stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg host: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
