Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the recording method that matches what you need to deliver: use PowerPoint’s slide-show recording for narrated slides, a screen recorder for a software demonstration, or Zoom or Teams for a live meeting capture. Google Slides users may be able to record through Google Vids, depending on account access. Before the full take, check your microphone, screen or camera framing, and save location with a short test recording.
Choose the right recording workflow
| What you need to record | Best-fit workflow | What the recording captures |
|---|---|---|
| A reusable presentation with narration and slide timing | PowerPoint slide-show recording | Narration, slide timings, and optionally video narration, ink, and pointer gestures |
| A walkthrough of an app, browser, or desktop task | PowerPoint Screen Recording or another screen recorder | A selected screen area or the full screen, with optional audio and pointer capture in PowerPoint |
| A presentation delivered live in a meeting | Zoom or Microsoft Teams | Meeting content and, depending on the platform and settings, a presenter layout |
| A Google Slides presentation recorded for later viewing | Google Slides recording through Google Vids, if available to your account | Screen only, audio only, or camera plus screen |
Decide whether viewers need only the slides, your voice, your camera, or a live meeting layout. The answer affects which app to use and which controls to check before recording.
Record narrated slides in PowerPoint
PowerPoint’s slide-show recording is designed for a presentation you can save or export as a video. Microsoft documents narration and slide timings, with controls to pause, stop, replay, and use markup tools. The dedicated Recording Studio can also capture audio or video narration, ink, and pointer gestures; you can preview or redo an individual slide.
- Open the presentation and select the slide where you want the recording to begin.
- Select Record and wait for the countdown.
- Present the slide and speak at a steady pace. Pause speaking while a slide transition runs: Microsoft says narration is not recorded during transitions.
- Use the recording controls to pause, stop, or replay. Preview a slide and redo it if needed.
- Save the PowerPoint file or export the recording as a video, then open the saved result to check it.
Recording a slide show is not supported in PowerPoint for the web, according to Microsoft’s cited guidance. The controls and availability can vary with PowerPoint version and Microsoft 365 feature rollout, so check the app’s Record controls before planning a session around a particular feature. See Microsoft’s record a presentation instructions and its slide-show narration and timing guide.

Record a software or desktop demonstration
For a product demo or process walkthrough, capture the application or browser itself rather than recording slide narration. PowerPoint has a separate Insert > Screen Recording feature. It can capture a selected area or the full screen, and its control dock offers audio and pointer recording. Microsoft says the capture can be embedded in a slide or saved as a separate file.
- In PowerPoint, choose Insert > Screen Recording.
- Select the smallest screen area that shows the task clearly, or choose the full screen if the workflow moves between windows.
- On the control dock, check whether audio and pointer capture are enabled as you intend.
- Record the walkthrough, stop the capture when the demonstration is complete, then choose whether to keep it in the slide or save it separately.
- Play the result and confirm that text, cursor movement, and any narration are legible and audible.
This is distinct from PowerPoint’s slide-show recording: use Screen Recording to show activity outside the deck. Microsoft’s PowerPoint screen-recording instructions describe the feature.

Record a Google Slides presentation with Google Vids
Google documents recording from Google Slides through Google Vids, with modes for camera plus screen, audio only, or screen only. Recording from Slides requires Chrome or Edge, edit access to the presentation, and a supported work or school account. Each Slides recording is limited to 30 minutes, and you cannot create one if Drive storage is over quota. External microphones and cameras can be selected in recording settings.
- Open the presentation in Google Slides using Chrome or Edge and confirm that your account has edit access.
- Check that the recording option is available to your account and that Drive is not over quota.
- Choose the recording mode—camera plus screen, audio only, or screen only—and select the microphone or camera in settings if you are using an external device.
- Record within the 30-minute limit, then locate the recording saved in Drive.
- Review sharing permissions before sending the file. Removing a recording from a presentation and moving its Drive file to Trash are separate actions in Google’s guidance.
Recording controls are not available to every Google Slides user, so confirm account eligibility before relying on this route. Google says recordings can be viewed, shared, and deleted from other supported Drive browsers, even though recording itself is limited to Chrome and Edge in the cited instructions. See Google’s Slides recording help and Google Vids presentation recording help.

Capture a presentation delivered live in Zoom or Teams
Zoom
Use Zoom when the meeting itself is the presentation and you want the recording to reflect shared content or a presenter layout. Zoom documents sharing a PowerPoint presentation and presenter layouts for shared presentation content. Its presenter-layout guidance specifies computer recording using Zoom’s desktop app version 6.3.0 or higher. Check that requirement and the sharing options on the computer you will use before the session. Read Zoom’s presenter-layout guidance and its PowerPoint screen-sharing instructions.
Microsoft Teams
Teams supports presenting a screen, desktop, or PowerPoint file in a meeting. On a Mac with the latest operating system, Microsoft says you must grant screen-recording permission before presenting. Allow that permission and verify the shared content before starting the presentation. See Microsoft’s Teams content-presentation instructions.

Meeting capture suits a live session that is itself the deliverable. If you need a polished standalone video with retakes or tighter editing, recording the slides or screen directly may be a more straightforward workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare and check the recording
- Define the deliverable. Choose narrated slides, a screen demonstration, or a live meeting recording.
- Choose what viewers should see and hear. Decide between voice only, slides with camera, screen only, or a meeting layout, and confirm the selected app and account offer that mode.
- Check the setup. Confirm the microphone, camera, browser or app version, permissions, and available storage. For Google Slides recording, verify Chrome or Edge, account eligibility, edit access, the time limit, and Drive quota.
- Make a short test recording. Listen for clear microphone audio and check that the selected screen area, slides, and camera framing are right. A built-in microphone is a valid option; a separate microphone is optional.
- Record the presentation. In PowerPoint slide recording, pause speaking during slide transitions because narration is not captured during them.
- Preview and correct. Redo a problematic slide or segment where the app allows it, then export or save the final version.
- Verify the handoff. Open the exported video or saved recording and make sure the intended audience can access it before sharing.
Fix common recording problems
- The slide-show recording option is missing in PowerPoint. PowerPoint for the web does not support slide-show recording in Microsoft’s cited guidance. Open the presentation in a supported desktop version and check its Record controls; availability can depend on version and feature rollout.
- Narration disappears around a slide change. PowerPoint does not record narration during transitions. Pause speaking until the transition is over.
- Google Slides has no recording option. The feature may be limited to certain work or school accounts. Confirm account eligibility and that you have edit access, and use Chrome or Edge for recording.
- Google Slides will not create a recording. Check whether Drive storage is over quota and whether the recording would exceed the 30-minute limit.
- There is no microphone or camera input. Check the device selected in the app’s recording settings and the operating system’s permissions. Google’s recording settings allow selection of an external microphone or camera.
- Zoom presenter layouts are unavailable in the recording. Zoom’s cited instructions specify computer recording with desktop app version 6.3.0 or higher for those layouts. Check the app version and recording mode.
- Teams cannot present the screen on a Mac. Grant macOS screen-recording permission, then retry screen sharing.
- The recording works but the recipient cannot view it. Check the saved file’s location and sharing permissions, then test the link or open the exported video before distribution.
