You can record a video for free with tools already on your device: use Camera on Windows or QuickTime Player on Mac for a camera video, and the built-in screen recorder on Windows, Mac, or iPhone to capture what is on screen. For more control over scenes and multiple audio or video sources, use the free OBS Studio. Record a short test and play it back before starting a longer take.
Choose what you want to record
A camera recording films you through a webcam or phone camera. A screen recording captures an app, game, or screen activity. The right free tool depends on which you need, whether you want microphone or system audio, and whether you need a face-camera overlay or multiple sources.
- Camera only: start with Windows Camera or Mac QuickTime Player.
- Screen or app: use Xbox Game Bar on Windows, Screenshot or QuickTime Player on Mac, or Screen Recording on iPhone.
- Custom layout or several sources: consider OBS Studio, which takes more setup.
App permissions and controls vary by platform and OS version. Some apps restrict recording, and the built-in Windows Game Bar workflow is for a game or app clip rather than a universal desktop capture tool.
Record a camera video on Windows
- Open the Camera app and select Video.
- Frame the shot, then select the video button to start recording.
- Select Stop when you are finished.
- Review the thumbnail and use the app’s folder option to locate the recording.
This records the connected camera’s view, not activity on your desktop. For Microsoft’s instructions, see How to use the Windows Camera app.

Record a game or app clip on Windows
- Enable Xbox Game Bar if it is not already available, then open the game or app you want to capture.
- Press Windows+Alt+R to start recording; press the same shortcut to stop.
- To toggle microphone capture, press Windows+Alt+M.
- Find the resulting MP4 in Videos/Captures and play it back to check the image and sound.
Microsoft documents this workflow for a game or app clip; do not assume it captures every part of the Windows desktop. See Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar recording guide.
Record a camera video on Mac
- Open QuickTime Player and choose File > New Movie Recording.
- Choose the camera and microphone you want to use, if prompted or available.
- Start recording, then stop when the take is complete.
- Play back the clip and confirm you captured the intended camera and audio.
QuickTime can use the Mac’s built-in camera or a connected iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. See Apple’s QuickTime movie recording guide.

Record the screen on Mac
- Open Screenshot or QuickTime Player and choose the screen-recording option.
- Choose to record the whole screen or a selected portion.
- If you want narration, choose a microphone before recording.
- Start and stop the capture, then play the file back to check the screen and voice.
Some apps may prevent their windows from being recorded; Apple gives Apple TV as an example. For screen-plus-camera layouts or multiple sources, OBS is an alternative. See Apple’s Mac screen recording guidance.
Record the screen on iPhone
- Open Control Center and tap Screen Recording; wait for the countdown.
- To narrate, touch and hold the Screen Recording control, turn on Microphone, then start recording.
- Stop the recording when finished. The video is saved in Photos.
Some apps disallow capture, and iPhone screen recording cannot run at the same time as screen mirroring. See Apple’s iPhone screen recording guide.

When OBS Studio makes sense
OBS Studio is free, open-source software for recording and live streaming. Its official page lists support for Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux, and describes real-time video and audio capture and mixing. It is useful when you need scenes, several sources, or a configurable recording setup; for a single webcam clip, the built-in recorder is usually more direct. Meeting the listed OS support does not by itself guarantee smooth recording on every computer.

Check the recording before the real take
- Confirm the target: make sure you selected the camera, app, screen area, or game you intend to capture.
- Check audio explicitly: select or enable the microphone where needed. A screen video can look right but have no narration if microphone capture is off.
- Make a brief test clip: play it back and check framing, sound level, and whether the file was saved where expected.
- Allow for restrictions and storage: some apps block capture, and recordings still use device storage. Free software does not mean unlimited storage or identical controls across OS versions.
