Most Android phones running Android 11 or later can record gameplay with the built-in screen recorder, so you usually do not need to install an app. The recorder’s name, controls and audio options vary by phone, and a game may block its sound from being captured. Make a short test first to confirm the picture, orientation and audio are right.
Quick start: record gameplay without an extra app
- Charge your phone, close apps you do not need and make sure there is room to save a video.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb if you do not want notifications appearing in the recording.
- Open your game and wait until it is in the orientation you want to record.
- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open full Quick Settings.
- Tap Screen recorder, Screen Record or a similar tile. If you do not see it, check the section below on missing recorder buttons.
- Choose an audio option if one is offered. Select device or media audio for game sound, microphone for commentary, or both if your phone supports it.
- Enable Show touches only if viewers need to see your taps. Tap Start, wait for the countdown and play.
- When finished, swipe down and tap the screen-recording notification or use the recorder’s stop control. Open the saved video and check it before deleting or sharing anything.
Android’s standard screen recorder has been available since Android 11, but its interface and availability depend on the phone maker and software version. Google notes that screen-recording steps can vary by device. Google’s Android recording guide covers the general Quick Settings workflow and options such as audio and touch indicators.
Before you record: make a 10-second test
A brief test can reveal a silent soundtrack, a missing microphone, a black screen, an unwanted notification or the wrong orientation before you capture a whole match. Record about 10 seconds from the game’s menu, stop, then play the file back with headphones if possible. Confirm that the game image, game sound and commentary are present as intended.

Decide which sounds you need before starting. Game audio, your microphone, and teammate or voice-chat audio are not the same thing, and a recorder may not capture all three. Also check that messages, account details or payment information will not appear: anything visible on screen, including notification previews and open menus, can end up in the video.

Samsung Galaxy: use Screen recorder
- Open the game and swipe down from the top-right of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Screen recorder. If it is not visible, edit the Quick Settings tiles and add it if your model offers the feature.
- Choose a sound option: None, Media or Media and mic, depending on what you want and what your phone displays.
- Tap Start recording. On supported devices, tap the front-camera control to add a selfie-video overlay.
- Tap Stop when finished, then check the video in Gallery.
Supported Galaxy models may also offer touch indicators, a movable selfie window and 480p, 720p or 1080p quality settings. Those options are not available on every model or software version; check Samsung’s screen recorder support page for model-specific details. On some devices, recordings can also be found in My Files → Internal storage → DCIM → Screen recordings. The exact save location can vary.
Samsung says its recorder does not record phone calls, VoIP calls or video calls, and some apps can block recording. A Galaxy phone’s model and software version matter, so do not assume every Samsung device has the same recorder features.
Choose the right audio setting
Game sound only
Select Device audio, Media, Internal sound or the closest equivalent. This captures device playback directly rather than relying on a microphone to pick up the phone’s speaker. It is usually the better option for clean game audio, but it is not guaranteed to work with every game.

Game sound and your commentary
Choose Media and mic, Device audio and microphone or an equivalent option if your phone offers it. The microphone can add room noise, fan noise, taps on the phone or echo from its speakers. Headphones can reduce speaker echo, though Bluetooth audio routing may change what you hear or what the recorder captures.
If Discord, in-game voice chat or another recording app is also using the microphone, your voice may be missing or another audio source may receive silence. Android manages access to audio input between apps, so test the particular combination you plan to use. Android’s audio-input documentation explains how competing input use can affect apps.
Microphone only
If internal game audio is unavailable, microphone mode with headphones is a fallback. The mic may pick up sound from the phone’s speaker, but that tends to include more room noise and is not equivalent to direct device-audio capture.

Check the likely causes in this order:
- The recorder is set to microphone or no audio instead of device/media audio.
- The game blocks playback capture, or its sound is treated as voice communication rather than capturable game or media playback.
- The phone or recording app does not support the needed capture mode.
- Another app is using the microphone, or Bluetooth routing has changed the audio path.
- The recorder app lacks a required microphone or screen-capture permission.
- The content is protected or restricted.
Try this diagnostic sequence: record a short clip from the game’s main menu with device/media audio only and play it back; repeat with the microphone enabled; then test another game. Restart the phone and retry if needed. If the built-in recorder captures sound but a third-party app does not, use the built-in recorder. If neither works, use the microphone-and-headphones fallback or a separate capture setup rather than assuming another app can override the game’s restrictions.

Settings for smoother gameplay
There is no universally best resolution or frame rate. If your phone and game handle recording comfortably, 1080p at 60 frames per second can suit fast gameplay or higher-quality publishing. For many phones, 1080p at 30 fps is a practical starting point. Try 720p at 30 or 60 fps when a recording stutters, storage is tight or sessions are longer. Some Samsung devices offer 480p, 720p and 1080p choices; other phones may offer different options or none.
Higher resolution and frame rate create larger files and use more processing power, battery and storage bandwidth. Recording can add heat and make a demanding game stutter. A smooth, watchable 720p/30 clip is more useful than a laggy or unsaved 1080p/60 recording. Reduce the recorder’s quality or the game’s graphics and frame-rate settings if performance suffers.
- Start with a short test before a long session.
- Close resource-heavy apps and leave enough free storage.
- Avoid direct sunlight or recording with the phone enclosed in a hot case.
- Remember that charging while recording can add heat.
- Stop if the phone becomes excessively hot or begins throttling.
- Keep floating recorder controls away from important game buttons.
Stop, find, trim and share the video
Stop from the notification shade or the recorder’s floating control. Look in Google Photos, your phone’s Gallery or media library, or the recorder app’s own library. Pixel and stock Android phones commonly expose recordings through Photos or the device media library; Samsung commonly uses Gallery, with some devices also storing files in the DCIM screen-recordings folder. There is no single folder that applies to every Android phone.
Play the video back before sharing it. Trim off the countdown, notification-shade movement, loading screens or accidental taps using your phone’s built-in editing tools or a video editor. Check again for private notifications or details in the finished clip.

If your phone has no built-in recorder
First check Quick Settings and the phone maker’s gaming tools, such as Game Launcher or Gaming Hub where available. Android 11 introduced a standard screen-recording feature, but phone makers can change its location or omit it on particular models. A missing tile can sometimes be added by editing Quick Settings; otherwise, check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact model.
If no system recorder is available, a reputable screen-recording app from Google Play may be an option. A third-party recorder must request your approval for screen capture; Android does not permit silent screen access through the standard MediaProjection flow. Review the app’s permissions, ads, privacy practices and save location, and run a test before relying on it. Internal audio still depends on Android, the device, the recorder and the game’s capture policy—installing an app does not bypass those restrictions.
For example, the XRecorder Google Play listing advertises gameplay capture, internal audio on Android 10 or later, and up to 1080p/60 fps and 12 Mbps. Those are vendor-listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every phone can sustain those settings. Mobizen’s internal-audio documentation likewise describes device, Android-version, app and source-game limitations.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Screen recorder button is missing
Open the full Quick Settings panel and use its edit control to look for an available recorder tile. Check the manufacturer’s gaming tools and help page for your exact model and software version. If the phone is older or the feature is unavailable, consider a Play Store recorder or external capture.

The game appears as a black screen
The game or screen may be protected against capture. Test a different, non-protected screen or game. If only one title produces a black image, its restriction is a likely cause; changing recording apps may not help.
My voice is missing
Check that microphone capture is selected and that permission has been granted. Close other apps that may be using the mic, then make a short test. If you are in voice chat, test whether the chat app and recorder can share audio input on your phone.
Voice chat or teammates are not included
Do not assume a screen recorder will capture call or voice-chat audio. Android restricts some voice-communication playback, and apps or device makers may impose further limits. Test the game audio and voice chat separately; if the recorder excludes chat audio, use an allowed separate recording workflow.

The recording is laggy or the phone gets hot
Lower resolution or frame rate, close background apps, reduce the game’s graphics settings and move the phone out of direct heat. Avoid adding charging heat where possible. If the phone remains excessively hot or throttles, stop recording and let it cool before trying again.
The file did not save or is missing
Check that the recording was stopped normally, then look in Photos, Gallery, the media library, the recorder app’s library and—on some Samsung phones—My Files → Internal storage → DCIM → Screen recordings. Check available storage: a long recording can fill it and prevent saving. Make a short test to confirm the destination before a longer capture.
When to use external capture
If on-phone recording causes unacceptable performance loss, or you need a more controlled production workflow, an external capture setup can move recording work away from the phone. It requires compatible hardware and connections and is more involved than the built-in recorder. For most casual gameplay clips, try the system recorder first; use other methods only when a specific limitation warrants the added setup.
