How to Record Gameplay with XSplit Broadcaster

Add gameplay to an XSplit scene, configure local recording, capture separate audio tracks, and save PC or console gameplay.

To record PC gameplay in XSplit Broadcaster, add the game to a scene with Game Capture, set up a local recording, then choose Record > Active Scene. If Game Capture does not work with a game, try screen or application capture. To record console gameplay, route its video through a capture card.

Record PC gameplay in XSplit

  1. Add the game to a scene. Open Add Source and choose Game Capture. XSplit says this source can capture supported games using DirectX, OpenGL or Vulkan; see its Game Capture guide. Resize and position the source on the stage so the scene looks as you want it in the recording.
  2. Use a fallback if the game is not detected. Try Screen Capture for games that do not work with Game Capture, including browser games, or use application/window capture for a particular desktop window. XSplit’s Game Capture instructions also say to check that DX12 and Vulkan capture are enabled at Tools > Settings > General if a game using either API is not found. Compatibility can still vary by game and configuration.
  3. Set up local recording. In Record, click the gear beside the target scene or Active Scene to open Local Recording Properties. Select the scene to record, then choose the available video codec, quality and audio options. XSplit documents software encoding with x264 and hardware options such as NVENC H.264, AMD VCE, Intel QuickSync and AVerMedia H.264, depending on installed hardware. Its local recording settings guide explains the available controls.
  4. Start, pause or stop. Choose Record > Active Scene. XSplit records the scene currently active in preview, so confirm the correct scene is selected first. Use the same Record menu to pause or stop; the interface indicates recording status.
  5. Find the file. Choose File > My Recordings to open XSplit’s local recordings window. This in-app route is more reliable than assuming a particular folder path, which can depend on your setup.

Choose recording settings for your game and PC

There is no universally best codec or quality preset: the right balance depends on the game’s resolution and frame rate, your hardware, and whether you need editing flexibility. Change one setting at a time and check a short test recording before capturing a long session.

  • Codec and quality: XSplit lists x264 for CPU encoding and hardware encoders when supported by the installed hardware. Its quality choices range from standard through ultra high, with custom settings also available. Higher quality can consume more CPU or GPU resources; a demanding game may stutter if recording competes for the same resources. XSplit does not rank these options for every configuration.
  • Output format: XSplit documents FLV and MP4 output. For MP4, the recording options include splitting files by duration or size. The Record Menu guide says force constant framerate is enabled by default. The Optimize for YouTube option applies encoder settings, but XSplit’s documentation does not establish that it guarantees platform acceptance or ideal quality.
  • Audio quality: Local recording properties include audio bitrate and mono/stereo choices. XSplit’s Record Menu article says bitrate choices begin at 96 kbps and that higher bitrates and stereo are license-gated to Premium Bundle/Broadcaster Premium; these licensing details may change, so check the current Record Menu guide and your installed edition.
  • Separate game and microphone tracks: Enable multitrack recording if you want to adjust system/game sound and microphone independently during editing. XSplit describes separate tracks for system sound, microphone and stream-only audio. Track behavior depends on the capture mode and version, so confirm assignments in the mixer and inspect a test file.

Record game audio and a microphone separately

Use XSplit’s multitrack recording options in Local Recording Properties when you want separate control in an editor. Configure the microphone and system/game sound in the mixer, then make a brief recording and verify that the resulting tracks contain the intended sources. XSplit’s audio modes guide documents a Presentation Sources mode; its example says adding Game Capture captures only game audio, even when the game plays through the default system device. That behavior is documented for Broadcaster 4.5, so check your version and source assignments rather than assuming all modes route audio identically.

Capture console gameplay or use a second PC

Console gameplay

XSplit says a capture card is required to bring console video into Broadcaster. Connect the console to the card, connect the card to the PC running XSplit as directed by its manufacturer, then choose Add Source > Camera/Capture Card and select the device. Exact cabling, supported resolution and frame rate depend on the console and capture card; consult their documentation if the device does not appear.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Two-PC setup

For a two-computer workflow, send video from the gaming PC to the computer running XSplit using an internal or external capture card, then add that device as a capture-card source. XSplit says the production PC should meet Broadcaster’s requirements. A second computer can separate gaming and production workloads, but XSplit’s guide provides no controlled performance measurements, so it is not a guaranteed fix for every performance problem.

Optional webcam

A webcam is not required to record gameplay. If you want a face camera in the scene, add it as a camera/capture-card source and resize it on the stage.

Check XSplit’s stated PC requirements

XSplit’s published support listing specifies the following requirements. These are vendor specifications, not a guarantee that a particular game, resolution, and recording workload will run smoothly; check the current system requirements page because requirements can change.

Category XSplit-stated specification
Operating system Windows 10/11, 64-bit
Minimum CPU 2nd Generation Core i5 or equivalent
Memory 8 GB RAM
Graphics GeForce/Radeon-class GPU supporting DirectX 10.1 or better
Recording/streaming recommendation 4th Generation Core i5 for HD 720p; 4th Generation Core i7 for HD 1080p

Do not rely on an old USB capture-device workaround without checking your version: XSplit’s settings page says USB 2.0 capture-device DXVA2 acceleration is available only in Broadcaster V4.1 or earlier.

Troubleshoot common recording problems

  • The game does not appear in Game Capture: Check whether it is using a supported graphics API and enable DX12/Vulkan capture at Tools > Settings > General if applicable. Try Screen Capture or application/window capture as a fallback. Some titles or configurations may remain incompatible.
  • The recording shows the wrong scene: XSplit records the active scene. Select and arrange the intended scene in preview before choosing Record > Active Scene.
  • The game runs poorly while recording: Try a lower quality setting or a hardware encoder if your system supports one. Encoding uses system resources, and the available headroom depends on the game and hardware; no preset is guaranteed to resolve every performance issue.
  • A microphone or game-audio track is missing or mixed incorrectly: Check the mixer assignments, multitrack options and capture mode. Make a short test recording and inspect each track before starting a full session.
  • The capture card is not listed: Confirm that the card is connected and recognized by the PC, then check its manufacturer instructions and supported modes. For a console source, the signal must pass through a capture card before XSplit can record it.
  • You cannot find the saved video: Open File > My Recordings in XSplit to locate its local recording files.
