The right redemption page depends on what your code does. Use Steam’s Wallet Code page for a Steam Wallet Code or gift card. Use Steam desktop client → Games → Activate a Product on Steam…, or the product-key registration page, for a game key intended for Steam. A code for another launcher must be redeemed there instead.
Identify the code before entering it

Check the purchase email, packaging, or retailer listing for an explicit statement that a key is for Steam. A key not intended for Steam will generally produce an invalid-product-code message. See Steam’s product-key guidance.

Redeem a Steam Wallet Code or gift card in a browser
- Open https://store.steampowered.com/account/redeemwalletcode/ directly.
- Sign in to the Steam account that should receive the money.
- Enter the code in the Steam Wallet Code field and select Continue.
- Check the Wallet balance shown after submission.
Steam converts a Wallet Code or gift card to the currency of the receiving account’s Wallet. Regional or local-law restrictions can still affect whether a particular code works. Wallet credit belongs to the account that redeems it; Steam says Wallet funds cannot normally be transferred, gifted, or withdrawn. Verify the account name before submitting.
Existing physical gift cards remain redeemable, but Steam is phasing out retail physical cards and expects retailers to run out by the end of 2026. Availability differs by country and retailer. Digital gift cards remain available through Steam’s official digital gift-card page.

Redeem a Wallet Code from the Steam client
Steam’s official support uses the same web redemption form rather than promising a separate, identical desktop menu on every version. Open the client, sign in to the intended account, open the account or Wallet area, and follow its Wallet Code link; if the link is difficult to find, use the browser URL above. Submit the code and confirm the updated balance.
Activate a Steam game or product key
Desktop client
- Open Steam and sign in.
- Select Games in the top menu and choose Activate a Product on Steam…. In some layouts, select + Add a Game in the lower-left corner, then choose the same option.
- Follow the prompts and enter the product key.
- Review the product name, accept the applicable terms, and complete activation.
- Open Library and confirm that the title appears.

Browser
- Go to https://store.steampowered.com/account/registerkey/.
- Sign in if Steam redirects you to the login screen.
- Enter the key, accept any terms shown, and submit it.
- Confirm the product displayed before finalizing.
- Check your Steam Library for the activated license.
Browser registration is useful on a phone or when the desktop client is unavailable, but it is for product keys—not Wallet Codes.
Steam keys, publisher keys, and non-Steam games
When Steam gives you a key for another service
Some Steam games display a CD key after download or installation. That key is often intended for a publisher launcher or another external service, not for Steam’s Activate a Product on Steam… form. Follow the instructions shown with the key. Steam explains this distinction at its third-party key support page.

When the game is not a Steam product
You can choose Add a Non-Steam Game… to place an executable or launcher shortcut in your Library. This does not create a Steam license and does not grant Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, or other ownership benefits. See Steam’s non-Steam game guidance.

What successful redemption changes
- A Wallet Code increases the Wallet balance of the signed-in account.
- A game key adds its product license to that account’s Library.
- A successfully registered game key is tied to that account and cannot normally be registered again elsewhere.
- Steam may show the product name or a confirmation message before completion; save that confirmation if you need to contact support.
Fix common redemption errors
“Invalid product code”
- Confirm the listing, email, or packaging explicitly says the code is for Steam.
- Compare every character with the original card, email, or receipt. Steam calls out common confusions:
0/O/Q/D,1/I/L,B/8, andG/6. - If it came from a physical retailer, wait several hours for retailer activation.
- Try once more carefully, then contact the seller if it still fails. Steam generally directs invalid retail and digital-key claims to the retailer.
“Duplicate product code”
The key is already associated with a Steam account and cannot be registered again. If you did not use it, contact the retailer or seller rather than repeatedly submitting it.
The Wallet Code was just purchased
Retail activation can take several hours. If the code remains unusable, contact Steam Support with a clear image or scan of the entire code and the matching receipt. Steam cannot resolve codes printed directly on a receipt; those must be handled by the retailer.

The code belongs to another launcher
Redeem it in the publisher’s or platform’s launcher. A Steam form cannot convert an external license into a Steam license.
The balance or game went to the wrong account
Wallet funds and activated licenses are account-bound. Steam does not routinely move Wallet funds between accounts, so check the account identity before redemption.

- Use only
steampowered.compages or the official Steam client. - Never send a code to someone claiming to be Steam Support.
- Do not enter it into “verification,” trade-recovery, free-game, or gift-card-checker sites.
- Keep the card, packaging, purchase email, and receipt until redemption succeeds.
- Treat requests for Steam gift cards as payment for taxes, fines, technical support, jobs, prizes, or account recovery as scams. Steam discusses these recurring scams at its Wallet support page.

Can I redeem a Wallet Code without the Steam app?
Yes. The official Wallet Code web page works in a browser after you sign in.
Can I redeem a code on the wrong Steam account?
You can submit it, but the resulting Wallet credit or license is tied to that account and generally cannot be moved.
Can I use a Steam Wallet Code in another country?
Steam converts redeemed value to the Wallet’s currency, but regional restrictions and local laws may affect a code’s eligibility.

Can I redeem a key that is already used?
No. A duplicate-product-code message means it is already linked to a Steam account; contact the seller if that is unexpected.
What if my code is printed on a receipt?
Contact the retailer. Steam says it cannot assist with codes printed directly on receipts.
What is the difference between a Steam key and a Steam Wallet Code?
A Steam key adds a product license to your Library; a Wallet Code adds spendable account credit.
Can I add a non-Steam key to Steam?
You may add the game’s launcher as a non-Steam shortcut, but that does not create Steam ownership or Steam license features.
