How to Reduce CPU Usage When Looping Church Services in OBS

Find the source of high CPU use in OBS, then tune church-service loops, decoding, scenes, and encoding without sacrificing readability or stream stability.

Looping a church service in OBS does not automatically cause high CPU use. First find out whether the load comes from video encoding, media decoding, rendering, or a complex scene. Then make the change that targets that cause: enable hardware decoding for supported media, simplify the scene, or switch from x264 to a supported hardware encoder if software encoding is the bottleneck.

Identify what is using the CPU

OBS has separate work to do: decode the video file, render the scene, and encode the outgoing stream or recording. A busy CPU can come from any of these, so changing the encoder will not necessarily fix a decoding or scene-rendering problem.

  1. Open OBS’s Stats window and note CPU use, rendering lag, and encoding lag during a representative service loop.
  2. If practical, compare a short run with the loop disabled against one with it enabled, then compare with streaming or recording enabled. Change one thing at a time.
  3. Use the symptoms to guide the next test: encoding lag points toward output encoding; rendering lag points toward scene or rendering workload. High CPU without either may still come from media decoding or other work, so test the media-source setting and scene separately.

These comparisons diagnose your own setup; they are not a universal benchmark. CPU demand varies with the computer, encoder, resolution, frame rate, media, and scene complexity, as OBS notes in its system requirements guidance.

Configure the loop for the kind of service playback you need

One prerecorded service

  1. Add the recording as a Media Source in the scene.
  2. Open the source’s properties and enable Loop.
  3. If the source is used across scenes, check its visibility behavior so it does not stop or restart unexpectedly when hidden or shown.

A playlist of recordings

  1. Add a VLC Video source and select the files for the playlist.
  2. Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties.
  3. Install a matching VLC version if OBS requires it and the source is unavailable.

OBS documents Media Source looping and VLC Video playlist looping as separate options; VLC Video requires VLC. See the official OBS Media Sources guide for supported formats and source properties.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Try hardware decoding for the recording

For a Media Source, enable Use hardware decoding when available in its properties, then test the actual recording on the church computer. This can move supported media decoding to the GPU, but the result depends on the GPU and file format; it may not help every setup. Check that playback remains smooth and that audio and video stay in sync before relying on it for a service.

Hardware decoding is not the same as hardware encoding: this option concerns reading the source video, while an encoder controls how OBS produces the outgoing stream or recording.

Reduce unnecessary scene and source work

OBS sources can use resources even when they are not currently visible. Review the active scene and scene collection rather than looking only at what appears on screen.

  • Remove unused, duplicated, or redundant sources and simplify scene collections.
  • Reduce the number and dimensions of browser sources where possible. If a browser source is only a static graphic, consider replacing it with an image source.
  • Avoid using source media at a much higher resolution than the output requires when it is being scaled down.
  • Keep only the visual elements needed for the service. Lyrics, camera feeds, lower thirds, and decorative overlays may be useful, but every added source contributes to the scene workload.

These are workload reductions, not guaranteed CPU savings. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide discusses source count, browser sources, and media resolution.

Change the encoder only if encoding is the bottleneck

If OBS is using x264 and the Stats window shows encoding trouble or the encoding work is driving CPU use, try an available hardware encoder instead. In OBS, open Settings → Output and select a supported option such as NVENC, AMF, or QSV, depending on the computer’s GPU, processor, operating system, and OBS installation. The exact encoder names and availability vary by system.

Run a representative test with the intended service scene and check both stability and image quality at your intended bitrate. Hardware encoding can free CPU capacity, but encoder generation matters: older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because encoding moves from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; read its hardware encoding guidance before changing a production setup.

Right-size output settings without sacrificing service readability

If CPU use remains high, test a lower output resolution or frame rate and compare the result on the display your congregation or viewers use. Lower settings can reduce workload, but the right choice depends on the content: lyrics, scripture, and service details must remain readable, and motion should still look acceptable. There is no single resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that is right for every computer, source recording, and stream.

Change one output setting at a time and test the complete scene. Keep a note of the prior settings so you can restore them if the picture becomes too soft or motion less smooth.

When a hardware upgrade is worth considering

Consider a GPU with an OBS-supported hardware encoder only after testing confirms that x264 encoding is the CPU bottleneck. Verify the exact card revision, operating-system and driver support, power supply, physical space, and available slot before buying; a model name alone does not establish compatibility with an unknown church PC.

For example, OBS’s hardware-encoding page distinguishes the GTX 1650 revision 1 from revision 2 when discussing encoder generations, and cites GTX 1650 rev 2 and higher as Turing-generation examples. Treat that as encoder-generation guidance, not a blanket compatibility recommendation. Check the current OBS hardware encoder guidance and your computer specifications first.

Troubleshoot common symptoms

Symptom Likely area to check Next step
CPU rises when the service file plays, even with streaming off Media decoding or source workload Test the Media Source hardware-decoding option if supported, and simplify the scene.
Encoding lag appears while streaming or recording with x264 Output encoding Test a supported NVENC, AMF, or QSV encoder in Settings → Output; compare image quality at the intended bitrate.
Rendering lag appears or the scene is complex Scene rendering and source count Remove unused or duplicated sources, reduce browser-source use, and avoid oversized media where practical.
VLC Video is missing or a playlist will not run VLC dependency or source configuration Install the matching VLC version, verify the playlist files, and enable Loop Playlist.
Playback becomes out of sync after changing decoding Media format or hardware support Disable hardware decoding and compare playback; use the option only if the tested result remains synchronized.
A hardware encoder is absent from Output settings Hardware, driver, platform, or OBS availability Check the GPU or processor, drivers, operating system, and OBS encoder support before choosing another method or buying hardware.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a prerecorded church service that stays live on YouTube, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud instead of relying on the church computer and home connection to remain on. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account.

Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team. Plans offer the same product; only the billing length changes. Monthly: $9.99 per month. India-based creators can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide.
