To reduce CPU use in a 24/7 Indian music stream, first check whether OBS is actually overloaded while encoding, then simplify the scene and lower output resolution or frame rate if needed. If you use x264, a faster preset can reduce CPU demand, but may need more bitrate for comparable image quality. Treat dropped frames and a poor YouTube connection status as a separate network problem, not automatic proof of CPU trouble.
Diagnose the bottleneck before changing settings
In OBS, video encoding and scene rendering are different workloads. x264 uses the CPU to encode; scene composition and rendering use GPU resources. A demanding scene can add load even when the encoding preset is unchanged.
- Record a baseline during a representative stream or test. Note the selected encoder, output resolution and frame rate, CPU use, OBS encoding and rendering lag indicators, dropped frames, and YouTube stream health.
- Identify which indicator is failing. Encoding lag points toward encoding work; rendering lag suggests scene/GPU work. OBS says dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection status can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. See the OBS Help Portal.
- Change one setting at a time and retest. This makes it easier to tell whether a change addressed CPU encoding, scene rendering, or network stability.
For a stream of Indian music, the audio itself does not establish how much video work OBS must do: a moving visualizer, animated overlays, or high-resolution background footage can make the scene more demanding than a static image. Check the actual scene rather than assuming it is static.
Simplify the OBS scene
Before lowering quality or buying hardware, remove work the scene does not need. OBS notes that sources can consume resources and some continue using resources while hidden. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing scene complexity and source demands.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Remove unused sources and filters.
- Reduce unnecessary animated browser overlays and the number or dimensions of browser sources.
- Use an image source for static artwork rather than a more demanding source that adds no useful motion.
- Use media sized appropriately for the output rather than unnecessarily large full-canvas assets.
Make a change, then observe OBS’s rendering and encoding indicators under the same representative scene. If rendering lag improves but encoding lag does not, the scene was part of the problem, but not necessarily the only cause.
Reduce resolution or frame rate if encoding is overloaded
If OBS reports encoding overload, reduce the amount of video work. Lower the output resolution, the frame rate, or both, and test after each change. OBS specifically suggests stepping down from 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 fps is not working; fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work. This guidance is from the OBS Project’s troubleshooting page, published June 12, 2021.

Reducing the base canvas resolution can affect how sources are laid out, so try the less disruptive output changes first. Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the actual visual content and remain stable for continuous operation; a music stream does not automatically need 60 fps.
Adjust x264 only when the CPU is encoding
If the selected encoder is x264 and encoding remains overloaded after scene and output adjustments, consider a faster x264 preset. Faster presets use less CPU, but are less compression-efficient; to maintain a comparable appearance they may require more bitrate. The useful balance depends on resolution, frame rate, visual motion, and available upload capacity. OBS explains this tradeoff in Streaming with x264.

OBS gives example starting ranges for its veryfast preset at low-to-medium motion: 3,000–5,000 kbps for 720p30 and 5,000–8,000 kbps for 1080p30. These are OBS examples, not a universal YouTube prescription. For YouTube, use its current codec-specific recommendations as a starting point, then test the actual stream.
Set YouTube bitrate and keyframes for the chosen encoder
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrates differ by codec, resolution, and frame rate:

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Indian ISP or upload connection can sustain the stream. Use the guidance for the codec and output you actually select, and leave enough capacity for a stable connection rather than choosing a bitrate your upload cannot maintain. During operation, distinguish encoding or rendering lag from dropped frames tied to connection status. If the CPU indicators are healthy but dropped frames continue with a yellow or red connection status, revisit bitrate and connection stability instead of continuing to lower CPU-heavy settings.
When to consider hardware encoding
Check the encoder choices OBS offers for your installed GPU or integrated graphics. If a compatible hardware encoder is available, compare it with the current setup in a representative test, watching CPU use, image quality at the chosen bitrate, GPU capacity for scene compositing, and stream stability. OBS’s help guidance supports checking available hardware encoders, but it does not establish that every system needs a new GPU or that hardware encoding will solve every bottleneck. Diagnose first; do not buy hardware solely because frames were dropped.
Music rights and 24/7 reliability are separate checks
Encoder settings do not grant permission to broadcast music. Confirm you have the rights needed for every recording and visual asset, and review YouTube’s applicable rules before running a continuous stream. The technical guidance here cannot determine rights to specific Indian songs, bhajans, kirtan, Gurbani, or other recordings. Likewise, a bitrate recommendation cannot guarantee uninterrupted service from a particular ISP or protection from local power interruptions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously live YouTube channel rather than keeping OBS and a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
