How to Reduce Data Use for a 24/7 YouTube Live Playlist in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reduce the data sent by a 24/7 YouTube Live playlist, lower the live encoder’s bitrate—usually by choosing a lower resolution or frame rate that still looks good enough for your videos. Then test the real upload connection, leave bandwidth headroom and check stream health. A wired connection can improve connection reliability, but it does not reduce the bitrate or data transferred.

What “upload size” means for a live playlist

For a continuous live stream, the relevant figure is the encoder’s sustained bitrate: how much video and audio data it sends each second. Lowering that bitrate reduces outbound data use. YouTube’s live-encoder recommendations apply to this stream; its separate recommended upload encoding settings concern finished video files uploaded to YouTube, not a live feed.

The lower the bitrate, the less data the stream sends, but the picture may lose detail or show more compression artifacts. Choose a quality target that suits the playlist, then test it. Static scenes and low-motion material may tolerate a lower setting than fast movement or fine detail, but the result depends on the actual content and should not be assumed without testing.

Choose a lower live bitrate that fits the picture

YouTube Help’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 recommendations. They are guidance for live ingestion, not a requirement to use the highest setting or a guarantee of identical picture quality for every source.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Live setting YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate Approximate data sent in 24 hours at that sustained bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 43.2 GB
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 64.8 GB
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 108 GB

The daily data figures are arithmetic estimates using decimal network units: bitrate in megabits per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8. They are not YouTube-published usage statistics. Actual transfer can vary with audio, protocol overhead and bitrate behavior; sending a backup feed adds its own traffic.

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings page for the exact resolution, frame rate and codec you choose. It lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1 ingest options, with codec-dependent guidance. Your encoder and ingest path must support the selected option. For H.264, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available for encrypted transport. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Set up and test the stream before leaving it on

  1. Pick the lowest acceptable quality target. Decide which resolution and frame rate look adequate for the playlist’s motion and detail. Don’t lower the setting solely to hit a data number if the resulting image is not usable.
  2. Set the live encoder, not the file-upload preset. Select a supported resolution, frame rate and codec, then use the matching live-ingest bitrate guidance. For H.264, set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, within YouTube’s stated maximum of four seconds.
  3. Test upload capacity on the actual setup. Run a speed test from the connection and location the encoder will use. Download speed does not tell you how much upload capacity is available. YouTube Help recommends testing upload bitrate and leaving about 20% bandwidth room beyond the total stream bitrate.
  4. Account for other traffic and backup feeds. Other devices or services using the connection can reduce bandwidth available to the encoder. If you send primary and backup feeds, include both in the total and preserve headroom for them.
  5. Run an unlisted test and watch stream health. Check picture, audio and YouTube’s stream-health messages before making the playlist public. Monitor the live stream after launch as well; YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring.

YouTube recommends Ethernet for a computer-based fixed streaming setup. A suitable wired connection may help avoid some wireless instability, but it will not lower the encoder bitrate or the amount of data the stream sends. You do not need to buy dedicated encoder hardware solely to change bitrate; existing computer software may be sufficient for a computer-based workflow.

Estimate data use over a day or month

Data use accumulates with bitrate and operating time. As a planning estimate, multiply the nominal bitrate by the seconds streamed and divide by eight to convert bits to bytes. At a fixed bitrate, a stream running all day uses four times the data of a six-hour stream. Multiply the daily estimate by the number of days in the period you want to budget for, and add traffic for any backup feed.

YouTube Help’s “Filming tips – Live” page gives about 10 MB per minute as a mobile live-streaming rule of thumb. That is framed for mobile streaming, not as a precise monthly estimate for an encoder-based 24/7 broadcast, so use your encoder bitrate for a sustained-stream estimate instead. The page is at Filming tips – Live.

What changes—and does not change—the data bill in India

The YouTube live settings guidance reviewed is not India-specific and does not state an India-only bitrate. Your practical limit is the upload capacity, data allowance and terms of your own ISP plan, which can differ by location and provider. Check the plan’s upload limits and any data cap or fair-use conditions before running a continuous stream; test the connection during the times you expect to stream, since shared-network use can affect available upload bandwidth.

A cable is useful if you need a wired connection and your computer and router have suitable ports, but buying a Cat 6 cable does not reduce transmitted data. Likewise, lowering video resolution or frame rate only helps if you also set the corresponding live encoder configuration and bitrate.

Reducing bitrate does not change whether you have the rights to broadcast the playlist. Use video and audio you are entitled to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content. Repeatedly streaming material you do not own or lack permission to use can create copyright and channel-policy problems; lowering resolution is not a workaround.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a playlist that should keep running without a home computer or connection staying on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for YouTube Live.
