Then choose the smallest plan that can sustain your encoder settings with reliability headroom. Lowering bitrate can reduce transfer use; downsizing compute may reduce Droplet charges. Simply powering off a bundled CPU Droplet does not stop its compute billing.
Find out what is driving the bill
Separate the bill into two questions: what compute resources does the stream need, and how much outbound data does it send? DigitalOcean’s included transfer allowance is pooled across a team’s Droplets, so the relevant balance is not necessarily the allowance of the stream Droplet alone. Inbound transfer is free; excess outbound transfer is currently billed at $0.01 per GiB. The billing page shows transfer usage and daily projections. Allowances do not roll over month to month. DigitalOcean Droplet pricing · Bandwidth billing.
- Open the DigitalOcean billing page and note current Droplet charges, team transfer used, remaining allowance, and projected transfer use.
- Review CPU, memory, and disk usage during representative streaming conditions. DigitalOcean advises using monitoring rather than guessing: overprovisioning costs more, while an undersized Droplet can impair performance or fail. See its plan-selection guidance.
- In your encoder, record the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Check that combination against YouTube’s current live encoder settings.
Estimate the stream’s outbound transfer
A useful first estimate is: bitrate in megabits per second × streaming seconds ÷ 8 = megabytes sent, using decimal units. Convert the result to the unit used in your billing comparison, and account for audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and differences between decimal terabytes and billed GiB. This is an estimate, not a DigitalOcean bill quote.
For example, a steady 5 Mbps stream running continuously for 30 days sends about 1.62 decimal TB, or roughly 1,507 GiB, before those additions. That is arithmetic from the chosen bitrate, not a published benchmark. Actual transfer use in DigitalOcean’s billing view is the figure to use when checking an overage.

Choose bitrate for the stream, not just the smallest bill
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Higher bitrate raises outbound transfer; lowering it can reduce bandwidth use, but may not provide the quality your stream needs. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 options, CBR, up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds. YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer output formats. Test the actual content, including movement and audio, rather than judging settings from a static scene. YouTube encoder settings.
Reduce compute cost without guessing
Compare plans using sustained CPU performance, RAM headroom, disk constraints, price, and included outbound transfer—not advertised monthly price alone. A cheaper plan may include less transfer or lack enough compute capacity for the encoder and other services on the Droplet. DigitalOcean’s pricing page currently lists Basic bundled plans starting at $4 per month; its displayed Basic table includes a 1 GiB/1 vCPU configuration at $6 per month with 1,000 GiB of included transfer, and a 2 GiB/1 vCPU option at $12 per month with 2,000 GiB. Prices and configurations can change, so confirm the live catalog before changing plans or purchasing. DigitalOcean pricing.

For a CPU- or memory-bound stream, compare the observed load with the smaller plan’s compute and memory capacity. For a bandwidth-bound stream, check the team’s remaining pooled allowance and the effect of bitrate before changing compute. Include disk size in the decision: it can prevent a direct resize to a smaller plan.
Why shutdown is not a billing fix
For bundled CPU Droplets, DigitalOcean bills from creation until destruction; resources remain reserved while a Droplet is powered off. A powered-off Droplet also cannot keep a 24/7 stream running. DigitalOcean bills bundled CPU Droplets per second, with a 60-second or $0.01 minimum and a monthly cap of 672 hours (28 days). Destroying the Droplet ends its compute charge, but plan for the loss of that server and its stream before doing so. Droplet pricing and billing.

Resize or migrate with a stream interruption plan
DigitalOcean supports CPU/RAM-only resizing and resizing that includes disk, but the available target depends on the Droplet and its disk size. Its support guidance says a Droplet cannot simply be resized to a smaller plan; migration may be needed. The control-panel resize procedure requires powering off the Droplet, and DigitalOcean recommends a graceful shutdown. Arrange a planned interruption or failover before beginning. See resize instructions and guidance on making a Droplet smaller.
- Confirm from monitoring that the proposed target has enough CPU and RAM for the real stream workload, with room for variation.
- Check disk constraints and whether the intended operation is a CPU/RAM-only resize or one that changes disk. If a smaller target is unavailable, plan a migration rather than assuming a direct reduction will work.
- Schedule downtime or prepare an alternative stream path. Shut down gracefully, then follow DigitalOcean’s resize or migration procedure.
- After the change, run a representative test stream and check both Droplet resource use and YouTube stream health before relying on it continuously.
Keep enough headroom to stay live
Cutting the plan or bitrate too far can turn a small saving into dropped frames or an interruption. YouTube’s official streaming tips say, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Treat that as a reliability margin above the stream bitrate, and test the actual setup. After resizing or changing encoder settings, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages as well as DigitalOcean CPU, memory, and transfer use.

Other costs to check
DigitalOcean lists backup and snapshot charges separately from Droplet pricing. Include them in a cost review only if you retain those resources. A lower Droplet price does not automatically reduce the total bill if separately billed resources remain active. DigitalOcean pricing details.
