Start by confirming Windows is actually driving your monitor at the refresh rate you intend to use. Then tune the monitor’s pixel-response setting and the game’s latency options, testing changes one at a time. These steps can reduce parts of the delay between an input and what appears on screen, but total system latency also depends on the game, CPU, GPU, and frame-rendering pipeline.

1. Check the active resolution and refresh rate

A monitor may support a high refresh rate without Windows currently using it. In Windows 10 or 11, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display. If more than one display is connected, select the gaming monitor and check its active resolution and refresh rate. Choose the highest offered rate that keeps your intended resolution.

Microsoft notes that a refresh-rate option marked with an asterisk does not support the current resolution and may change it when selected. If the rate you expect is missing, check the monitor’s supported modes, the GPU output, and the connection’s capabilities before assuming the monitor is faulty. The available modes depend on the display and setup.

Higher refresh rates reduce scanout latency, according to NVIDIA’s system-latency guide. They also make motion updates appear more frequently. The exact latency difference depends on the display mode and the rest of the system; there is no single millisecond saving that applies to every monitor and game.

When Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate is enabled

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) requires compatible variable-refresh-rate hardware and at least 120 Hz, and Microsoft says it can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. If a game appears to be running at a lower rate with DRR on, Microsoft’s suggested mitigation is to turn DRR off.

2. Tune the monitor’s response-time setting

In the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD), look for a control named Overdrive, Response Time, or Pixel Response. Start at Normal or a moderate setting, then inspect moving edges in a game or motion test. Increase or decrease the setting only if the result looks better on your model.

Overdrive changes how the monitor drives pixels to reach their next color. Stronger is not automatically better: excessive overdrive can create bright or dark halos, inverse ghosting, or other distracting overshoot. NVIDIA warns that these effects can outweigh the response-time benefit. The labels and behavior vary by monitor, so a setting that works well on one model may not on another.

If your monitor has an esports or low-processing picture mode, compare it with the ordinary mode. Such modes may disable image-processing features, but the effect depends on the model. There is no universal OSD setting that minimizes latency across monitor brands and panels.

3. Reduce game and rendering delay

Monitor latency is only one part of the path from a mouse click or key press to a visible response. NVIDIA divides display latency into scanout, display processing, and pixel response; its broader system-latency guide also identifies OS, game, and rendering latency as contributors, with PC latency often the largest part of total system latency. A monitor setting cannot remove a game’s simulation delay or a queue of work waiting for the GPU.

If the game supports NVIDIA Reflex

Enable the game’s NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency option if it is available for your game and platform. NVIDIA says Reflex synchronizes CPU and GPU pipeline work so frames are rendered just in time. Availability and effect vary by game and system; it is not a universal monitor feature.

If Reflex is unavailable

NVIDIA’s guide identifies its driver-level Ultra Low Latency mode as an alternative in its ecosystem. NVIDIA says Reflex overrides that driver functionality when both are enabled, so stacking both is unnecessary. Change one relevant setting at a time and assess responsiveness and frame pacing in the game you play.

4. Test fullscreen and borderless modes in your game

Do not assume one display mode is always faster. NVIDIA’s 2020 guide recommends exclusive fullscreen where possible because it can bypass the Windows compositor. Microsoft’s newer Windows 11 feature, Optimizations for windowed games, improves compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless by moving supported presentation to a newer flip model, reducing frame latency and enabling features such as variable refresh rate on supported displays.

To try the Windows feature, go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics, enable Optimizations for windowed games, and restart the game. Windows also provides per-app graphics settings. The feature does not apply to every game or graphics API, and NVIDIA’s 2020 guidance and Microsoft’s current Windows 11 guidance cover different conditions. Compare the modes your game actually offers rather than relying on a blanket rule.

5. Choose between tearing and latency

V-Sync and variable refresh rate (VRR) settings involve trade-offs. Turning V-Sync off can reduce latency, but may produce visible screen tearing. For players who prioritize tear-free output, NVIDIA describes a G-SYNC setup using V-Sync together with Reflex (or its driver low-latency mode). In the conditions described by NVIDIA—when the GPU is bound below the display refresh rate—this can keep frame rate below refresh and latency low, but NVIDIA says it has slightly more latency than uncapped frame rates with Reflex.

NVIDIA’s guide also specifies in-game V-Sync for windowed mode or certain hybrid laptops in that configuration. These are vendor-specific recommendations, not a guarantee for every game or VRR implementation. Try the settings available for your GPU and game, and judge tearing, smoothness, and responsiveness together.

6. Identify the bottleneck before upgrading

If your active refresh rate is already correct and monitor tuning does not help, the limiting delay may be upstream of the display. NVIDIA distinguishes game latency from render latency: its guide points to a faster CPU as a possible response when game latency is high, and a faster GPU when render latency is high. Those are diagnostic directions, not a guarantee that an upgrade will improve every setup.

A higher-refresh-rate gaming monitor is worth considering when the current display or its measured behavior is the limiting factor. Make sure your PC and connection can drive the target resolution and refresh rate. Compare independent measurements of input lag at the mode you will use, pixel response and overshoot at that refresh rate, and VRR behavior with your GPU and games. An advertised “1 ms” specification alone does not establish measured input lag.

What the refresh-rate research does—and does not—show

A 2019 NVIDIA Research publication reported better performance as refresh rate increased from 60 to 120 to 240 Hz in a controlled moving-target clicking task. In a separate experiment at fixed 240 Hz, adding 0, 4, or 8 ms of artificial latency had a less pronounced performance effect than the refresh-rate change in the first experiment. The publication also gives 15 ms latency at 240 Hz as an example of a configuration esports players could achieve—not as a requirement or a result guaranteed for every player.

The experiments used single-click hitscan and accumulated-aim tracking versions of a moving-target task. They support the value of refresh rate and low latency in those controlled conditions, but do not quantify the benefit for every game, monitor, or player. See the NVIDIA Research publication in the Journal of Vision, published September 6, 2019.
