If first-person survival horror makes you dizzy or nauseated, start by reducing camera motion that happens without your input, then adjust field of view and look sensitivity in small steps. Change one setting at a time, test briefly, and stop as soon as symptoms begin. These adjustments help some players, but they cannot make every game comfortable for everyone.
Why first-person horror can feel uncomfortable
Motion sickness can include dizziness, nausea, headache, sweating, pallor, or vomiting, and both symptoms and intensity vary between people. In a first-person game, the image may suggest that your body is moving while you remain physically still. Microsoft describes this sensory mismatch as a potential barrier to play in Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117.
There is no established population figure for how often players experience sickness specifically in first-person survival horror. A 2024 qualitative study documents individual player experiences and coping strategies; it does not measure prevalence across all players.
Adjust settings in a practical order
Option names and availability differ by game and platform. Look in the game’s accessibility, camera, display, or controls menus. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it seems to improve comfort; this is a practical way to compare settings, not a method validated by the cited studies.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Reduce camera movement and visual effects
First try turning down or disabling camera bob, weapon sway, screen shake, motion blur, and other moving or distorting screen effects. If the game offers a setting for automatic camera movement or changes in camera angle, reduce or disable it as well. These options address movement that may occur independently of your input. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 identifies field of view, camera bobbing, motion blur, weapon sway, and automatic camera-angle changes among settings that can matter for accessible play.
-
Test field of view in small increments
If field of view (FOV) is adjustable, change it a little at a time and try the view from your usual seat or screen distance. There is no universally comfortable FOV: Microsoft’s guidance says players should be able to find an angle suited to factors such as viewing distance. A very wide FOV can make the image look distorted or “fishbowl”-like; some players may prefer a lower angle. Keep the setting that feels comfortable while still letting you see and control the game.

-
Slow down quick turns if they are a trigger
If fast camera turns feel uncomfortable, lower horizontal and vertical look sensitivity if the game offers those controls. Some games let you adjust the two axes separately; others provide only one sensitivity setting. Make modest changes and check whether aiming and turning remain manageable.
-
Try a different perspective, if available
If the game offers a third-person view, test it to see whether it feels better. Some participants in the 2024 qualitative study reported finding third-person perspective helpful, but individual experiences varied. Treat it as an option to try, not a guaranteed fix.

Test cautiously and stop when symptoms start
Try any revised settings only while you feel well, and stop playing when symptoms begin rather than pushing through them. Take time away from the game to recover before deciding whether to try again. The 2024 qualitative study reports that players commonly stopped to recover; it also found that changing camera or display settings helped some participants but did not make certain games comfortable for others.
Seek clinical advice if symptoms are severe or persistent. Apple gives similar advice in motion-sickness guidance for Vision Pro, but that guidance is device-specific rather than a game-specific treatment protocol.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
- Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 is design guidance recommending configurable camera and motion settings. It is not a clinical trial and does not identify a setting or FOV value that works for everyone.
- The 2024 qualitative study describes player experiences and coping strategies; its findings support individual variation, not a guaranteed intervention.
- A 2021 study found that a visual guide reduced sickness in its experimental virtual-reality first-person-shooter scenarios. That result concerns head-mounted VR and those study conditions; it does not establish that adding a crosshair or visual guide reduces sickness on a television or monitor.
- NHS motion-sickness advice and the CDC Yellow Book address travel or simulator contexts. They do not establish that ginger, medication, acupressure bands, fans, or other products treat symptoms caused by ordinary first-person game play.
