How to Reduce OBS CPU Usage During a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reduce OBS CPU usage during a 24/7 YouTube stream, first find out whether OBS is struggling to encode, render, or process your scenes. If software encoding is the bottleneck, test a compatible hardware encoder; if scenes are the problem, simplify them; if your delivery requirements allow it, reduce output resolution or frame rate. Test with the same motion, audio, and scenes you plan to stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. No single setting guarantees a stable all-day stream.

Diagnose what is using resources before changing settings

OBS can spend resources encoding video, rendering scenes, and handling sources and filters. A hardware encoder may offload encoding, but it will not necessarily fix rendering lag or an expensive scene. There is no universal CPU percentage that identifies a problem on every computer.

Check OBS Stats and the log

  1. Open OBS and reproduce the conditions that cause trouble: use the intended scenes, video playback, overlays, transitions, and capture devices.
  2. Open View > Stats. Watch for encoding overload, rendering lag, and dropped frames while the stream is running.
  3. Review the OBS log for encoder and rendering indicators. Interpret them alongside your hardware, OBS version, and the scene that was active; a single CPU reading does not establish the cause.
  4. Compare a quiet or static scene with a representative high-motion scene. An idle preview may not reveal the load of animated overlays, browser sources, video, or transitions.

Change one thing at a time and compare the same scene and content. That makes it easier to tell whether a change addressed encoding, rendering, or source-processing pressure.

If encoding is the bottleneck, test a hardware encoder

OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide explains that hardware encoders can move video-encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware. OBS lists QuickSync, NVENC, and AMD VCE as hardware-encoder options where supported. Which options are available depends on the GPU generation, drivers, operating system, and OBS build.

In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the encoder selected for streaming. If the software encoder x264 is selected and Stats or the log points to encoding overload, test an available hardware encoder with the same output resolution, frame rate, and content. Compare the resulting encoding indicators, picture quality at your chosen bitrate, and stability in a realistic test before relying on it.

Hardware encoding is not automatically better for every system or workload. OBS notes that earlier-generation hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264 using the default veryfast preset. Its hardware guide, dated January 11, 2022, describes NVIDIA NVENC support on Windows and Linux for GeForce 750 Ti / Maxwell-era GPUs or newer and identifies Turing as a sixth-generation NVENC generation; treat that as dated guidance, not a complete current compatibility list. Check the options available in your current OBS installation and current hardware documentation.

Reduce output resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity

Lower the output resolution before changing the canvas

In OBS, open Settings > Video and adjust Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you actually intend to deliver. Lowering output resolution can reduce performance pressure without changing the dimensions of your scene layout.

Changing Base (Canvas) Resolution affects scene composition and source placement. OBS generally advises against reducing the canvas unless resources are severely constrained. If you do need to change it, create a new scene collection and reposition or resize sources there, rather than disrupting a layout you may still need.

Try 30 fps if 60 fps is not holding up

In Settings > Video, change Common FPS Values to a lower frame rate if your delivery needs allow it. OBS specifically recommends trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. Its overview also cautions that 60 fps can be much more demanding than 30 fps, so test the system before committing to a long stream.

Simplify scenes with controlled tests

Hide or remove one source, filter, or animation at a time, then check whether the relevant OBS Stats indicators change. If they do, the change offers evidence about which part of the scene contributes to the load. Do not assume a particular source type always uses a fixed amount of CPU: the effect depends on the scene and system.

Keep YouTube Live encoder settings within ingest requirements

Reducing bitrate alone is not a dependable fix for CPU encoding overload. Choose settings that fit the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use, and consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table. The following are YouTube’s H.264 live-stream recommendations; they are ingest guidance, not CPU targets.

H.264 output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It calls for CBR bitrate encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. The recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the matching row in YouTube’s current table rather than borrowing figures from its upload-video guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

Match OBS output settings to the stream

In OBS, use Settings > Output to configure the selected encoder and bitrate mode, and Settings > Video to set output resolution and frame rate. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the selected encoder exposes that control, and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum. Confirm that the chosen codec and settings are supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current ingest guidance.

Allow upload bandwidth headroom and test long runs

CPU tuning and network reliability are separate problems. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond your stream bitrate. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to OBS. Check actual upload capacity under realistic household or office conditions; include any backup stream in your planning.

Before committing to a 24/7 run, test a representative long-duration stream with the same scenes, motion, audio, resolution, and encoder you expect to use. Monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health during the test, and have a recovery plan. YouTube Live Control Room offers stream-key and auto-start/auto-stop settings, but automation is not a substitute for testing or monitoring.

Choose the fix that matches the bottleneck

Approach Best fit Trade-off or limit
Hardware encoder Software encoding is confirmed as the pressure point and compatible hardware is available. Availability depends on hardware and software; image quality at the same bitrate can vary by encoder generation. It may not address rendering or scene complexity.
Lower output resolution or frame rate A lower delivery specification is acceptable and the system needs less processing work. The stream is delivered at a lower resolution or frame rate; test whether that meets the program’s needs.
Simpler scenes Testing suggests a source, filter, animation, or other scene element contributes to the load. Removing or changing scene elements may affect the presentation; isolate changes rather than guessing.
Lower base canvas resolution Resources remain severely constrained after less disruptive adjustments. Capture and asset management become more complicated; sources may need repositioning and resizing.
Cloud playback for prerecorded content The requirement is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream without a local PC producing it. This is an operational alternative, not an OBS tuning fix; it does not replace interactive or locally composed OBS workflows.

Consider buying a GPU only if your current hardware lacks a suitable encoder and testing confirms that software encoding is the bottleneck. A new encoder is not a guaranteed remedy for scene-rendering or source-processing pressure.

Common problems and what to check

  • CPU remains high after switching to hardware encoding: Check OBS Stats for rendering lag as well as encoding overload. Test a simpler scene and compare representative content; the encoder may not be the bottleneck.
  • Encoding overload continues with x264: Test a compatible hardware encoder, or reduce output resolution or frame rate if your target permits. Compare using the same scene and stream conditions.
  • Stream health is poor despite acceptable OBS encoding indicators: Check upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Also inspect Live Control Room messages and verify the selected bitrate against the correct codec and output row.
  • The stream looks worse after a change: Compare image quality at the actual bitrate and output settings. Hardware encoder quality varies, and lowering resolution or frame rate changes the delivered result.
  • Sources no longer fit after changing the canvas: Restore the previous scene collection or reposition and resize sources in a new collection, as OBS recommends for a canvas change.
  • A saved profile behaves differently during an all-day stream: Reproduce the real scenes and motion, then monitor both OBS Stats and YouTube stream health over a representative run. A static preview alone does not establish long-run behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 stream is prerecorded video rather than a live, interactive OBS production, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.

StreamNeo includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Plans differ by billing length, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. See StreamNeo pricing for the price shown for your location.

StreamNeo does not reduce OBS load for a locally composed or interactive production: it is an alternative for keeping uploaded video live on YouTube. If that fits your use case, start your free first day with StreamNeo.
