How to Refund a Game on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch games bought digitally are generally non-refundable in the U.S., but pre-orders, unauthorized charges, duplicate payments, and technical problems require different steps.

In the U.S., Nintendo Switch digital game purchases are generally final. Nintendo does not normally refund accidental purchases or games you simply do not like, and there is no standard refund button in the Switch eShop. However, you should still check the transaction and contact Nintendo Support if the purchase was unauthorized, duplicated, connected to a technical problem, or is an eligible pre-order cancellation.

The correct steps depend on whether you bought a digital game, DLC, physical cartridge, download code, subscription, or pre-order—and where you live.

Nintendo’s U.S. refund policy

Nintendo’s U.S. digital-purchase policy says payments for digital products are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires otherwise.

Nintendo specifically says it cannot provide refunds or exchanges for a mistaken purchase or a game the customer does not like. This applies generally to digital games, downloadable content (DLC), and related digital products bought through Nintendo services.

Nintendo eShop Physical Gift Card
  • Give the gift of fun with a Nintendo eShop gift code
  • It's easy—apply it to your Nintendo eShop account in seconds.
  • It ensures that you’ll always have funds on hand to help with purchases of new games and applications
  • It’s designed for your Nintendo eShop purchases—no credit card required.
  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch system.

That means there is no general U.S. “played for less than two hours” or 14-day refund policy for Nintendo Switch games. Deleting, archiving, or redownloading a game also does not change the purchase or remove its license from your Nintendo Account.

You can nevertheless ask Nintendo to review the situation. Contacting support is a request for assistance, not a guaranteed refund.

How to ask Nintendo to review a purchase

  1. Stop downloading or playing if the purchase was just made. This does not create a refund right, but it preserves the facts and avoids unnecessary use while you investigate.
  2. Confirm the Nintendo Account. Several accounts can be used on one Switch, so check the account associated with the purchase rather than relying only on the console where the game appears.
  3. Open your purchase history. Go to accounts.nintendo.com, sign in, choose Profile settings, select Shop menu, and then choose Purchase History.
  4. Compare the transaction with your payment statement. Check the title, date, amount, currency, and whether the bank entry is pending or completed.
  5. Contact Nintendo Support. Use the official Nintendo Support contact page for the account’s country and current contact options.

Include your Nintendo Account email or ID, the game or DLC title, purchase date, amount and currency, order or transaction information, whether the download began or the game was played, and the reason for your request. For technical problems, include error codes, screenshots, and a description of what happens when you download or launch the software.

What to do in each situation

Situation Best next step
Bought the wrong game Contact Nintendo Support, but expect that a mistaken U.S. digital purchase is generally non-refundable.
Do not like the game There is no general U.S. buyer’s-remorse refund entitlement.
Pre-order has not been charged Check cancellation eligibility immediately; payment and pre-loading status matter.
One bank entry is pending Wait for the authorization hold to clear and confirm whether a completed purchase exists.
Two completed charges appear Compare both entries with Nintendo purchase history, then contact Nintendo.
A child or household member purchased it Contact Nintendo for help. Do not automatically report a known family purchase as payment fraud.
An unknown person made the purchase Secure the Nintendo Account and payment method, contact Nintendo, and dispute genuine fraud with the payment provider if necessary.
The game will not download or launch Record the error and contact Nintendo Support. A refund is not automatically guaranteed.
Physical cartridge Ask the retailer about its return policy; Nintendo is usually not the seller.
Download code or eShop card Contact the retailer or code issuer under its applicable policy.
Nintendo Switch Online or another subscription renewal Cancel future renewal and contact Nintendo about the specific charge; this is not the same as refunding a game.

Can you cancel a Nintendo Switch digital pre-order?

For U.S. digital pre-orders placed through Nintendo.com, Nintendo says cancellation is possible before payment is processed and the game is pre-loaded. Payment is taken no sooner than seven days before release.

Do not interpret that as a guaranteed seven-day refund period. The important questions are whether payment has been processed and whether pre-loading has started. A pre-order that has already been charged or pre-loaded may no longer be cancelable through the ordinary pre-order process. If release is near, contact Nintendo Support promptly and state where the pre-order was placed.

  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

What if the bank shows two Nintendo charges?

Two entries on a card statement do not always mean Nintendo charged you twice. One may be a temporary authorization hold from a declined or incomplete transaction. Nintendo says these holds are commonly released within one to three days, although the timing depends on the bank or card issuer.

  1. Check whether each entry is pending or posted.
  2. Compare the statement with the Nintendo Account’s purchase history.
  3. Remember that adding money to an eShop balance and then buying a game can create separate legitimate transactions.
  4. Avoid repeatedly retrying a failed purchase, which can create additional holds.
  5. Contact the bank if a pending hold remains beyond the issuer’s stated timeframe.
  6. Contact Nintendo if two completed Nintendo transactions correspond to one purchase.

Read Nintendo’s guidance on pending, held, and duplicate-looking charges.

What if the purchase was unauthorized?

A child or family member made it

A purchase made by a child or someone in your household may be unauthorized by you, but it is different from a transaction made by an unknown fraudster. Nintendo advises contacting it for help with purchases made by a family member. Do not automatically file a fraud dispute for a known household purchase, particularly because payment disputes can lead to restrictions on the Nintendo Account.

An unknown person made it

If nobody you know made the purchase:

  1. Contact Nintendo about the unauthorized transaction.
  2. Change the Nintendo Account password.
  3. Sign out of other devices where appropriate.
  4. Enable two-step verification.
  5. Contact your card issuer or PayPal and secure the payment account.
  6. Request a replacement card if the payment details were exposed.
  7. Dispute the charge with the payment provider when it is genuinely fraudulent.

Nintendo warns that disputing a payment can result in restrictions on the Nintendo Account. That warning should not stop you from reporting real fraud, but a chargeback is not a shortcut for an accidental purchase or buyer’s remorse. Follow Nintendo’s unauthorized-charge and account-security guidance as well.

What if the game is defective or will not work?

A game that will not download, launch, or function properly is different from a game you simply dislike. Nintendo’s U.S. mistaken-purchase guidance does not establish an automatic defect-refund guarantee, so contact Nintendo Support and explain the problem.

Before contacting support:

  • Confirm that the correct Nintendo Account purchased the game.
  • Check available console or microSD storage.
  • Confirm that the download has finished.
  • Restart the console.
  • Check Nintendo’s service-status information.
  • Test whether other games work normally.
  • Write down error codes and capture screenshots.

Support can determine whether the problem is an account, download, service, or software issue and what remedy, if any, is available.

Does deleting the game cancel the purchase?

No. Deleting or archiving software only frees storage or removes the local installation. It does not reverse the payment, cancel the order, or remove the digital license from the Nintendo Account. Factory-resetting the Switch does not create a refund either.

If you later regain access to the purchasing account, you can generally treat redownloading and refund eligibility as separate issues.

Physical games, download codes, and subscriptions

Physical Nintendo Switch games

If you bought a cartridge from a retailer, contact that retailer under its return, exchange, and defect policy. Nintendo eShop refund rules do not govern an ordinary retail cartridge purchase.

Download codes and eShop cards

A code bought from a retailer is not the same transaction as a game purchased directly through the eShop. Ask the retailer or code issuer about an unused, incorrect, or defective code. Have the receipt and code details available.

Nintendo Switch Online and other subscriptions

A Nintendo Switch Online renewal or in-game subscription may appear as a Nintendo charge but is not a game purchase. Turn off automatic renewal to prevent future charges, then contact Nintendo about the specific renewal and your region’s terms. Do not assume that canceling future renewal reverses a payment already processed.

Do refund rules differ outside the U.S.?

Yes. Nintendo’s terms and consumer-cancellation rules depend on the country and transaction type. Do not apply the U.S. answer—or a UK/EU answer—to every region.

Nintendo UK says mistaken purchases and games the customer does not like are not normally refundable after digital delivery begins. Its terms explain that the customer can consent to immediate digital performance and acknowledge losing the cancellation right once delivery starts.

For digital pre-orders, Nintendo UK describes a statutory cancellation framework and an additional voluntary cancellation option before payment. It says payment begins no sooner than seven days before release and that customers should cancel through Nintendo customer support. These rules do not establish a universal 14-day right for U.S. purchases.

How to prevent accidental purchases

  • Require a password when opening the eShop or making purchases.
  • Use a unique Nintendo Account password.
  • Enable two-step verification.
  • Use parental controls and purchase restrictions for child accounts.
  • Avoid storing payment details if you do not need them saved.
  • Turn off automatic renewal for subscriptions you do not want renewed.
  • Review purchase-history emails and bank notifications promptly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund if I have not played the game?

Not normally in the U.S. Nintendo’s policy generally does not refund mistaken purchases or games the customer does not like, even if the game has not been played. You can still contact Nintendo if another issue—such as unauthorized activity, a duplicate completed charge, or a technical problem—applies.

Can Nintendo refund a child’s accidental purchase?

Nintendo may review the circumstances, but a refund is not guaranteed under the U.S. policy. Contact Nintendo rather than automatically describing a known child or family purchase as fraud.

Can my bank reverse an accidental Nintendo purchase?

You can ask your payment provider about its procedures, but a chargeback for an ordinary accidental purchase can lead to restrictions on the Nintendo Account. Contact Nintendo first unless the transaction is genuinely fraudulent.

Is a Nintendo Switch 2 purchase handled differently?

Nintendo’s U.S. downloaded-game support guidance covers Nintendo Switch 2 as well as Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED Model systems. The account, transaction type, region, and applicable terms determine the outcome—not simply which Switch hardware you use.
