Yes. You can use a phone, tablet, or computer to tell a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S to download a game while you’re away. The console—not your phone—downloads the files, so it must be online, reachable, and have enough storage. If the Xbox app doesn’t show an install option, try the game’s product page on the Xbox or Microsoft Store website.
What remote downloading does—and what it doesn’t
A remote install sends an instruction to your Xbox. The console then downloads and installs the game using its own internet connection. Once the command is accepted, your phone does not need to stay open or connected for the console to continue downloading.
Remote downloading is different from two other Xbox features:

Before you start: prepare the Xbox
- Use the right account. Sign in on the console and the remote device with the Microsoft account that owns the game or has the relevant subscription entitlement. Sharing arrangements, such as another account’s Home Xbox, can complicate which titles are available.
- Connect the console to the internet. It needs its own working connection to receive the request and download the game.
- Enable remote features. On the Xbox, look under Settings → Devices & connections → Remote features and enable remote features. Menu names can vary with dashboard version and region; if your screen differs, search Settings for “remote features.”
- Choose a reachable power mode. The console generally needs a connected standby mode—often labelled Sleep—to receive commands while it appears to be off. A full shutdown or energy-saving mode may prevent it from responding until you turn it on. Exact behavior depends on console, software, and network settings.
- Check storage. Leave enough room for the game and any required content. The listed base-game size may not include every add-on or update.
- Know which console to choose. If you have multiple Xbox consoles, note their device names. A clear name such as “Living Room Series X” makes it easier to select the right one remotely.
- Check compatibility and entitlement. Confirm that the Store listing is for your Xbox model and that you own the game, can claim it, or have access through a current subscription.
Remote download from the Xbox app
- Open the Xbox app on your phone or tablet and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox.
- Search for the game and open its product page.
- If the page offers an install control, choose it and select the Xbox console you want to use.
- Confirm the request if prompted. Keep the console connected to power and the internet while it downloads.
App screens and available controls can change, and the install option may not appear for every title, account, or app version. If the app does not offer an install control, use the Store website route below rather than assuming the game cannot be installed remotely.
Remote download from a browser
- On a phone, tablet, or computer, open the Xbox game catalogue or the Microsoft Store.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the console.
- Search for the game and open its official product page. Check that the listing is the correct Xbox version, not a PC-only edition or add-on.
- Choose the available install option. Depending on the listing and your entitlement, it may say Install, Install on my devices, or show different purchase or subscription choices.
- Select the target Xbox and confirm. If several consoles are listed, double-check the device name.
Microsoft’s Store download guidance explains how to find and install digital downloads, including cases where an install option appears in place of a purchase button. The Store website is a useful fallback when app controls differ.

Installing a Game Pass game remotely
If a title is included with your Game Pass plan in your region and is available for your Xbox model, its Store page may let you install it without buying it separately. Check the platform and plan details on the listing: a game being available for PC, cloud play, or another Xbox generation does not guarantee it is available for your console.

How to check whether the install worked
- On the console, open My games & apps → Manage → Queue to check for a download in progress, waiting, or failed.
- Check the game’s Store page. Its control may change to Installed or Play, though status can take time to update.
- If the Xbox app shows a device or download status, use it as an additional check—not a guarantee of real-time progress.
- Check the console’s available storage if the request was accepted but the install did not complete.
Status reporting can lag if the console is asleep, offline, updating, or temporarily unreachable. The console’s queue is the best place to investigate a stalled or failed download.
If the remote install is not working

Remote installs, preloads, and disc games
Remote-installing an available game is not necessarily the same as preloading a preorder. A digital preorder may allow installation before release, but timing depends on the game and publisher. A release lock, regional launch time, patch, or day-one update may still prevent you from playing immediately after the files are installed.

Remote installation also does not necessarily remove a disc requirement. Some disc-based games can download files but still require the disc in the console to verify the license when launched. This depends on the title and how it is supported on your Xbox.
Installing to a PC is a different process
The Windows Xbox app downloads PC games to the PC where the app is running; that is separate from telling an Xbox console to install a console game. Xbox’s PC app page lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later as a requirement. Remote Play streams from your console, while Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Microsoft’s servers—neither is the same as a remote console download.
