FFmpeg handles these differently. Use silencedetect to locate quiet audio and silenceremove to trim it; inspect durations and timestamps for boundary gaps, then join with the concat demuxer or concat filter according to whether the files can be stream-copied.
Diagnose the pause before changing the files
“Dead air” is ambiguous. A quiet stretch in the audio is not the same problem as a timestamp gap between files, and neither is necessarily a frozen or empty interval in the video itself. Check a representative join in playback, then inspect the inputs and output with ffprobe to compare stream durations and timestamps. The right fix depends on what the pause is and whether the files are compatible for the joining method you want to use.
- Audio is quiet or silent: identify the quiet interval, then trim audio if it is safe to remove. A silence filter does not remove an empty video interval.
- There is a gap or artifact at the file boundary: check each file’s duration and stream timestamps. Incorrect duration information or streams of unequal length can affect where the next file is placed.
- The picture itself pauses: inspect the source video around the join. Trimming audio silence will not repair a frozen or blank picture.
Find and trim silent audio
Locate candidate intervals with silencedetect
This example asks FFmpeg to report audio below a -50 dB noise tolerance for at least two seconds:
ffmpeg -i replay.mp4 -af silencedetect=n=-50dB:d=2 -f null -Read the reported start and end times, then listen to those sections before deciding to cut them. The threshold and minimum duration are settings to tune, not universal values. A quiet crowd bed, soft commentary, or a deliberate pause may be meaningful rather than dead air. FFmpeg’s documentation gives silencedetect=n=-50dB:d=5 as an example; that is an illustration of configurable options, not a recommended setting for every recording.

Remove only the audio silence you intend to cut
FFmpeg’s silenceremove filter can remove silence from the beginning, middle, or end of audio. Its threshold and duration settings determine what qualifies as silence, so choose them using the detected intervals and a review of the material. The correct filter graph depends on where the silence is, the number of files, and how their audio and video need to stay synchronized. Do not apply an audio-only trim as though it also cuts the corresponding video interval.
Fix gaps caused by file durations or timestamps
Use the concat demuxer when stream copying is suitable
The concat demuxer reads a list of files and adjusts their timestamps using the files’ durations. FFmpeg’s documentation explains that it places each subsequent file where the previous one finishes, but warns that gaps can result when streams do not have exactly the same length. Inaccurate duration information can also cause artifacts.

For compatible files, create a list such as:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'replay-01.mp4'
file 'replay-02.mp4'Then join the listed files without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.ffconcat -c copy joined.mp4This is a join command, not a silence detector or silence-removal command. The demuxer expects the files to have matching streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. Check that requirement before relying on stream copy. Use -safe 0 only if the list needs paths rejected by FFmpeg’s default safety checks; safe mode is enabled by default. If a file’s duration metadata is wrong, the concat list can include a duration entry to override it, but use a value supported by inspection rather than guessing.
Use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed
FFmpeg’s concat filter is the route when stream copying is unsuitable or re-encoding is acceptable. Each segment must start at timestamp zero, and corresponding streams need compatible parameters. If video resolutions differ, convert them explicitly before concatenation. The exact graph depends on the number and layout of streams and on the trim points, so there is no single safe command for unknown replay files.

When trimming, reset segment timestamps to zero and keep related audio and video trims coherent before feeding them to one concat filter. The filter joins synchronized audio and video, uses the longest stream’s duration for each segment except the last, and may pad shorter audio with silence. FFmpeg notes that a stitch can desynchronize when audio and video in the first file do not have exactly the same duration. Review the output at every join rather than assuming a clean-looking boundary guarantees sync.
Choose the method that matches the problem

Verify the joined replay
- Play the output across every boundary, not just from the beginning.
- Listen for clipped words, removed ambience, clicks, or unexpected silence.
- Check that picture and sound remain synchronized immediately before and after each join.
- If a demuxer join still has a gap or artifact, recheck stream durations, timestamp continuity, and compatibility; do not assume the list itself trims silence.
Troubleshooting common boundary problems
The audio is still silent after concatenation
Concatenation joins files; it does not find or remove silent samples. Run silencedetect on the relevant audio, confirm the interval by listening, and apply an appropriate audio trim.

The demuxer output has a gap or artifact
Check whether streams in the inputs have different lengths and whether reported durations are accurate. The demuxer positions later files from duration information, so inaccurate values can shift a join. If stream layouts, codecs, or time bases do not match, use a filter-and-encode workflow instead.
The filter output has a pause or loses synchronization
Confirm that each segment begins at timestamp zero, corresponding streams have compatible parameters, and audio and video were trimmed together. Inspect the first segment’s audio and video durations particularly closely; the concat filter may pad shorter audio, and mismatched durations can affect a stitch.

A silence trim removes wanted sound
Use a less aggressive threshold or duration for the material, and review the detected boundaries. A filter can classify quiet content as silence; the settings must suit the actual recording.
