How to Remove Variable Frame Rate from Phone Videos Before Using OBS

Use an explicit CFR export to convert phone footage before OBS when needed. Learn how FFmpeg handles frame timing, what to check in a GUI converter, and why remuxing alone does not remove VFR.

To remove variable frame rate (VFR) from a phone video, export or transcode it to a chosen constant frame rate (CFR). FFmpeg can do this with its -fps_mode cfr output mode or fps filter; both adjust frame timing by duplicating or dropping frames. Renaming the file or remuxing it into another container is not the same conversion.

What VFR means—and when conversion is needed

Frame rate describes how often video frames are displayed. In a VFR file, frame display durations can vary; Apple’s QuickTime format documentation defines its VFR indication in terms of whether those durations vary (Apple QuickTime format documentation).

Do not assume every phone recording is VFR, or that every OBS workflow requires conversion. Check the properties or timing of the actual clip and convert when a constant frame schedule is needed for your project or downstream workflow. Constant frame rate (CFR) is also not the same as constant bitrate (CBR): one concerns frame timing, the other data rate.

Convert the video to a deliberate target rate

  1. Inspect the source clip. Use your operating system’s media properties or a video inspection tool to check its frame-rate mode, dimensions, duration, audio, and format. Phone model alone does not establish whether a particular file is VFR.
  2. Choose a target rate. Match it to the source footage and intended OBS project. There is no universal rate that is right for every phone clip or project.
  3. Export with an explicit CFR operation. In FFmpeg, use -fps_mode cfr with your selected output frame rate, or apply the fps filter with that rate. See the current FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg filters documentation. CFR conversion changes the frame schedule: FFmpeg duplicates or drops frames as necessary to meet the requested rate.
  4. Set compatible output options. Choose a container and video and audio codecs that suit your workflow. Stream mapping and audio handling depend on the input and output choices, so there is no single safe command for every file. Consult FFmpeg’s documentation for the options that match your clip and target.
  5. Verify the export. Check the resulting file’s frame-rate mode and play or scrub through it with audio. Watch for visible judder, unexpected duration changes, or audio synchronization problems before bringing it into OBS.
  6. Use the converted file in OBS. Add it to the relevant OBS workflow only after checking that playback and audio behave as expected.

Choose between FFmpeg and a graphical converter

Approach What to look for Trade-off
FFmpeg Use an explicit CFR mode or fps filter, and specify the target rate and suitable output handling. Offers direct control, but requires command-line familiarity and careful choices for codecs, container, and audio.
Graphical converter Confirm the export settings explicitly offer constant frame rate or a fixed frame-rate conversion, then choose the target rate. May be easier to operate, but available controls and verification tools depend on the application. Paid software is not required just to access FFmpeg’s documented conversion route.

Whichever route you use, verify the exported file rather than relying on a setting label alone. The exact inspection steps depend on your operating system and chosen software.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Why OBS remuxing is not a VFR fix

OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide describes remuxing recordings to a more compatible container, such as MP4. Remuxing addresses container compatibility; it does not describe rescheduling frames to a constant rate. If you specifically need CFR, use a frame-rate conversion or export operation. Remux only when the issue is the container.

Common problems and what to check

  • The output still reports VFR: Confirm that the converter performed a CFR conversion rather than merely changing the container or file extension. Check that the export used an explicit fixed-rate mode.
  • The converted video looks uneven: CFR conversion can duplicate or drop frames. Recheck whether your chosen target rate suits the footage and project; do not expect every source frame to remain unchanged.
  • Audio is out of sync or duration changed: Review the output’s audio handling and stream mapping, then play the full export. These details depend on the input and output settings.
  • The file still will not work in another application: Check container and codec compatibility separately. A CFR export and a container remux solve different problems.
  • You are unsure conversion is needed: Inspect the actual clip and test it in your intended workflow. The fact that it came from a phone is not enough to identify its timing mode.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, rather than to make phone footage suitable for an OBS project, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
