To replace a YouTube stream key used by an always-on server, reset it in YouTube Studio, copy the new key into the server’s encoder configuration, then apply the change using that encoder’s reload or restart process. You’ll need to be the channel owner or a manager; editors and viewers can’t reset the key. Expect that updating the sender may briefly interrupt ingest—YouTube does not promise a seamless rotation for third-party encoders.
Before you reset the key
- Arrange the right account access. A channel owner or manager must perform the reset; editor and viewer roles don’t have permission. YouTube’s stream-settings help documents the permission boundary.
- Be ready to update the sender. After reset, the server must use the new key. If you cannot access the encoder configuration or its documented restart/reload procedure, arrange that access before rotating the credential.
- Plan for a possible interruption. The encoder may need to reconnect after its configuration changes. YouTube does not guarantee a no-interruption handoff or specify a propagation time for a reset.
A stream key is a credential for sending video to YouTube, not the broadcast title or stream URL. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the replacement as a secret: don’t expose it in screenshots, public logs, or shared documentation.
Replace the key in YouTube Studio and your server
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open the stream settings. Select Stream in the left menu.
- Reset the key. Find Stream key and select Reset next to the hidden key. Copy the newly generated key. YouTube documents this action in Manage live stream settings.
- Replace the key in the always-on encoder. In the server’s encoder configuration, replace the old value in the stream-key field with the new one. Keep the stream URL in its separate field; YouTube’s encoder setup guide treats the URL and key as separate settings.
- Save and apply the configuration. Use the reload or restart procedure documented for your encoder or server. There is no universal command for third-party software, and YouTube’s general setup instructions don’t specify one.
- Verify ingest. Confirm that the encoder reconnects and that Live Control Room receives the feed. If it doesn’t, check the copied key, stream URL, and protocol before changing unrelated broadcast settings.
Check the connection if the server will not reconnect
- Wrong or incomplete key: Reopen the encoder’s saved configuration and check that the replacement value was copied completely into the key field.
- URL and key swapped or URL changed: Confirm that the stream URL is in the URL field and the replacement credential is in the key field. Preserve the correct URL when rotating a key.
- Protocol mismatch: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS. If using RTMPS, confirm that the encoder supports it and use the exact RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than guessing one. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.
- SSL connection error: Check the protocol, encoder support, and URL. YouTube notes that port 443 may be relevant for certain SSL errors; follow the error-specific guidance rather than changing ports blindly.
- Old key still configured: Make sure the saved configuration was applied and the encoder was reloaded or restarted through its documented process.
YouTube does not publish an exact cutoff or grace period for a reset key. If the new configuration still fails after these checks, verify the current stream settings in Live Control Room and consult the encoder’s own documentation.
Key reset versus reusable key and API stream
Resetting the current key is the documented path when you need to replace that credential, for example after exposure. YouTube also supports creating custom stream keys for reuse across streams. Those are different goals: reset a current credential to rotate it; use a custom key when you deliberately need a reusable key and can manage that credential securely. See YouTube’s stream-key settings guidance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For API-based setups, a liveBroadcast represents an event or video, while a liveStream contains ingest settings. Google’s API documentation says one stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts, and recurring events may reuse a stream. That model does not mean a normal manual key reset automatically requires creating a new broadcast or stream. Google’s overview of broadcasts and streams explains the distinction.
Some LiveStreams API configuration properties cannot be changed after creation; Google’s update reference advises creating a new stream when an immutable property needs a different value. That guidance concerns those specific properties, not every key reset. See the LiveStreams update reference.
