In an IDP fantasy league, replace an injured linebacker with a healthy, eligible bench player if that player’s role and likely scoring fit your league. If your bench has no suitable option, look to free agents or waivers. Check the latest injury and inactive information, and make the move before the replacement’s lineup lock. The right pick depends on your platform, scoring rules, roster settings and available players.
First, confirm your league starts individual defensive players
Linebacker replacement advice applies only when your league uses individual defensive players (IDP) and the injured player occupies a linebacker-eligible slot. NFL.com describes one common setup with a defensive lineman, linebacker and defensive back starter, but lineup requirements and scoring vary. Custom leagues may define different positions and roster-lock rules. Check whether your slot accepts only linebackers or any defensive player. Then read how your league awards points: the player’s position label alone does not tell you which role or scoring opportunities are most valuable in your format.
Check the player’s status and your lineup deadline
Use your fantasy platform’s latest status and check for the NFL team’s official inactive announcement close to kickoff. NFL Fantasy says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before a game is scheduled to start. ESPN says it updates its fantasy injury tags using the NFL’s official injury and inactive list. NFL Fantasy’s inactive-status guidance and ESPN’s player status and IR guidance describe those processes.

An injury tag is not a guarantee that a player will sit or play. Recheck before the injured player’s game and before your replacement’s game: some platforms lock each player when that player’s team starts. NFL Fantasy’s published 2025 rules allow lineup changes until a player’s team is scheduled to start; other platforms and league settings may differ. See NFL Fantasy’s official rules and check your own league’s lock setting.
Choose a replacement in this order
- Check your bench. Find a healthy player eligible for the injured player’s lineup slot.
- Compare fit, not just the name. Consider the candidate’s expected defensive role, your scoring rules and position eligibility. Those details shape the opportunity to score in an IDP league.
- Look to free agents or waivers if needed. If no bench player fits, compare available eligible linebackers using the same criteria. Follow your league’s waiver process and allow enough time for a claim to process before the game.
- Make the change before the relevant lock. Confirm the replacement is in the starting lineup before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to play, or before the deadline specified by your platform and league.
There is no single replacement to recommend without knowing the injured player, league scoring, platform, week and available-player pool. NFL.com notes that IDP scoring and lineup needs vary, so a player who suits one league may not be the best option in another.

Use an IR slot only if your platform allows it
If your league offers an injured-reserve (IR) slot, check the player’s current designation and the platform’s rules before moving them. On ESPN, players with OUT or IR status can be placed in an IR slot when the league has that feature. If an IR player’s designation changes to no injury designation, ESPN says the roster becomes invalid. See ESPN’s IR eligibility rules.
ESPN also says placing an eligible player in IR/IL opens a roster spot, but roster-size checks still apply. A player who becomes healthy may require a roster adjustment and can affect new waiver claims. These are ESPN-specific rules; check the applicable platform’s documentation and your league settings before relying on an IR slot. Consider an automatic inactive swap
NFL.com Fantasy offers an Auto-Swap Inactives setting. When enabled, it benches a player projected to score zero and starts the highest-ranked player on the manager’s configured Backups list. Check that the option is available and enabled in your league, and keep the backup list current. Automatic swaps can help with late inactives, but they do not replace checking eligibility, scoring fit and lineup settings. NFL Fantasy’s Auto-Swap instructions provide the platform details.
