Check the latest injury and inactive reports, confirm which positions can fill the roster slot in your league, then choose an eligible bench or waiver option before your league’s lineup deadline. The right replacement depends on your platform, scoring rules and available players; without those details, there is no reliable player-specific pick.
Check whether the safety is likely to play
Look at the player’s latest NFL practice and game status, then check the official inactive list close to kickoff. NFL.com defines Questionable as uncertain whether the player will play, Doubtful as unlikely to participate, and Out as not playing. These labels describe availability, not a guarantee about a particular player’s outcome; a status can also change as game time approaches.
Confirm the roster slot and eligible positions
Open your league’s lineup and check whether it uses individual defensive players (IDP) or a team defense. In an IDP league, inspect the injured player’s slot and the eligible positions shown by your platform. A safety may have to be replaced by a safety, or the slot may accept a broader set of defensive positions; league settings determine what is legal. Do not assume that any defender can fill it.
Check your bench, then the waiver pool
Start with players already on your roster
Review eligible defensive backs on your bench first. This avoids relying on a pickup that may be blocked by waiver rules, roster limits or another manager claiming the player.

If needed, look for an unrostered option
If no bench player fits, check available players and your league’s waiver or free-agent process. Waiver order, processing time and roster limits vary by platform and league, so confirm how a claim or add works before relying on it to complete your lineup.
Compare eligible replacements using your league’s scoring
Among players you can actually start, compare the expected role and playing time, defensive opportunities, matchup and scoring settings. In particular, check how your league rewards tackles and big plays: the relative value of those outcomes depends on its scoring rules. Use current player-level information for the specific week; a general position label or a single injury designation is not enough to identify the best choice.

Make the change before your league’s deadline
Use the lineup deadline displayed by your platform and league. NFL Fantasy’s Official Rules 2025 allowed weekly lineup changes before the player’s scheduled NFL start, but that is a rule for that product and season—not a universal or necessarily current deadline for every league. Check your league’s current settings, especially when games begin at different times.

An IR slot is a roster-management feature, not a substitute for checking lineup eligibility or deadlines. ESPN’s guidance, updated August 18, 2026, says its injury statuses use the NFL’s official injury and inactive list and sets conditions for using ESPN’s IR slot. Those conditions are specific to ESPN; check your own platform’s rules before moving a player to IR.
