To repurpose a YouTube livestream, first protect the recording, then choose whether to clean up the original archive or publish a separate highlight, clip, or Short. YouTube Studio has different workflows for each: trimming changes the existing video, while highlights and clips create separate videos or drafts.
1. Protect the livestream recording
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube Help recommends recording a local archive as a backup. If you streamed with an encoder, check that the local recording is intact and that the file is still growing during the broadcast.
Keep the local file somewhere you can retrieve it if the archive is missing or a section did not record properly. An external SSD or hard drive is an optional place to store a backup; YouTube does not require either device or specify a storage capacity.
In YouTube Studio, open the content area and find your live archive. From there, you can adjust its visibility or delete it. Before editing, download a copy or use Google Takeout if you want to preserve an untouched version.

2. Mark moments worth revisiting
For a future stream, add stream markers when something useful or memorable happens. They appear on the highlight timeline and make it easier to locate a moment in a long broadcast. A solo creator can add markers and make a highlight after the stream; a team member can do it while the broadcast is live.
3. Choose the right YouTube Studio workflow

4. Edit the archive without replacing it
- Open the archive in YouTube Studio. Go to the live video in the Studio content area, then open the Editor for that video.
- Choose the edit. Use the trim controls to shorten the beginning or end, or use the cut controls to remove a section from the middle.
- Review the full result. Check the cut points and play the edited portions before saving, especially where speech, gameplay, or transitions continue across an edit.
- Save only when you are satisfied. YouTube’s Trim page says that, as of June 2025, saved changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.” Keep a separate copy first if preserving the unedited recording matters.
Studio’s trim-and-cut feature is documented for videos shorter than six hours. When you use it, the existing video URL, views, and comments remain unchanged rather than moving to a newly uploaded video.

5. Publish a highlight from the livestream
- Open the live workflow in YouTube Studio and choose the option to create a highlight.
- Select the segment. Drag the timeline handles or enter timestamps. If you added stream markers, use them to find candidate moments more quickly.
- Adjust the audio if needed. You can change the mute setting for the selected segment.
- Add the title and description, then choose visibility. Make sure the visibility setting matches your intent before publishing.
- Create the highlight. YouTube’s help guidance says the resulting video is published automatically.
6. Make a separate clip or Short from a long-form video
Use YouTube’s Clips and Shorts tools when you want a derivative rather than a change to the main archive. Select a portion by transcript text or timestamps, preview it, and create a draft for upload. Where available, AI-powered suggestions and outlines may help with selection, but availability depends on country and language; you can still use the transcript or timestamps workflow.
7. Check eligibility for a mobile live Short highlight
YouTube’s mobile Short highlight path is narrower than making a clip from an existing archive. The source livestream must meet all of these conditions:

The saved Short highlight is private by default. Change its visibility if you want viewers to find it publicly.
8. Handle copyright claims and preserve your options
If a copyright claim affects a video, YouTube lists three possible responses: trim the claimed segment, replace claimed music with music from the YouTube Audio Library, or mute the claimed audio. Review the result before saving, and keep a separate backup if you may need the original audio or footage later.

9. Organize the archive and its derivatives
Give the full archive, highlights, and clips clear titles so viewers can tell which is the complete broadcast and which is a selected moment. YouTube recommends organizing archives and highlights into playlists. For mobile Short highlights, verify visibility rather than assuming the saved video is public.
