How to Request a Refund for an MMO Purchase

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the company or store that charged you: an MMO publisher usually cannot refund a purchase processed by Steam, PlayStation Store, Nintendo, or another retailer. Find the transaction in that account, identify whether it was game access, DLC, virtual currency or an item, or a subscription, then use that seller’s refund process. Eligibility depends on the seller, product category, timing, use or download state, and country.

1. Identify who processed the charge

Check the order confirmation, receipt, or bank statement for the seller. Submit the request through the account or support system that processed the payment. A game publisher may be able to help with an account or technical problem, but it may direct purchases made through a store back to that store. Minecraft Support, for example, says each selling store has its own policy and directs customers to the store where the game was bought: Minecraft refund policy.

Confirm the country associated with the account and check the terms that apply there. The PlayStation and Nintendo examples below are US policies; they are not universal rules for other territories or sellers.

2. Find the transaction and submit the request

Steam

  1. Sign in to Steam Help.
  2. Open Purchases, select the relevant purchase, and choose the problem that best matches what happened.
  3. Select “I’d like to request a refund” and submit the form.

PlayStation Store

  1. Open the account’s Transaction History.
  2. Select an eligible transaction and choose “Request Refund.”
  3. Follow the instructions on the PlayStation refund support page.

If your purchase was made through another store, look for its order history, purchases, or transaction history and follow that seller’s refund route. Keep the receipt or order number handy.

#1 Best Overall
Fortnite eGift Card
  • Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
  • Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
  • If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
  • Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
  • Redemption: Online

3. Classify the MMO purchase before checking eligibility

“An MMO purchase” can mean several things, and storefront terms may treat them differently. Identify the exact line item on the receipt.

  • Base game or access: the game itself, a starter edition, or a paid access entitlement.
  • Expansion or downloadable content (DLC): additional game content sold separately.
  • In-game purchase: virtual currency, a consumable, or another item bought inside the game.
  • Subscription: recurring membership or game time billed as a subscription.

For example, Steam’s in-game purchase terms are limited: Valve-developed games have a stated 48-hour request window, and the item must not have been consumed, modified, or transferred. Third-party developers can opt into Steam refunds, and Steam says eligibility is indicated at purchase; other in-game purchases in non-Valve games are not refundable through Steam under its stated policy. See Steam’s refund policy.

Blizzard Entertainment - Wolrd of Warcraft 60 Days of Game Time [eGift Card] - $29.99

  • Simply enter your code at battle.net/code then assign this game time to any new or existing World of Warcraft account to keep the adventures going. No game purchase required.
  • Includes access to World of Warcraft and WOW Classic. The most recent modern WOW expansion is sold separately.

4. Check the relevant policy against your timeline

Before requesting a refund, note the purchase date and what happened afterward: playtime, downloads or streaming, whether the game was launched after an item purchase, and whether an in-game item was delivered, consumed, modified, or transferred. These details can affect eligibility. The examples below summarize the cited policies; check the current terms for your country and transaction before relying on them.

Seller and purchase Timing and use conditions in the cited policy Scope
Steam game purchase Valve says it will issue a refund for a request made within 14 days of purchase when the game has been played for less than two hours. Requests outside those stated conditions can still be submitted for review. Steam’s standard game-refund rule. Steam instructions.
Steam in-game purchase For a Valve-developed game, request within 48 hours; the item must not have been consumed, modified, or transferred. Third-party developers may opt in. Not a general refund rule for all MMO items or games. Steam Refunds.
PlayStation Store game or DLC The US support page lists a 14-day request window and says the game or DLC must not have been downloaded or streamed, unless faulty. The US cancellation policy likewise excludes downloaded or streamed games and add-ons unless faulty. US PlayStation Store policy; verify the product category and current local terms. Support page and US cancellation policy.
PlayStation Store consumable or subscription Separate criteria apply. The US consumables checklist includes a 14-day request period, purchase from PlayStation Store, and not launching the game after the purchase. Subscription refunds have separate initial-payment and timing conditions; use may reduce a refund. US PlayStation rules; consult the category-specific support page and cancellation policy.
Nintendo US digital purchase Nintendo says Nintendo Account service payments, including pre-purchases and subscription payments, are final and non-refundable except where Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. US policy only; it does not establish the terms for other countries or a purchase from another seller. Nintendo US policy.

These examples are not interchangeable. In particular, do not apply Steam’s game-playtime rule to a subscription or in-game item, or assume a US console-store policy governs a purchase made elsewhere.

5. Write a clear, accurate explanation

Keep the request brief and factual. Include the order or transaction, the item, the purchase date, and the actual reason, such as a duplicate or accidental purchase, an access problem, or a charge you do not recognize. State what you have tried if the issue is technical. A particular reason does not guarantee a refund; the seller’s policy and applicable law determine the outcome.

6. Use a separate route for technical or unauthorized-charge problems

If the game is not working

Submit a refund request to the seller if you want to seek one, and contact the publisher’s support team about the underlying login, server, or account issue when appropriate. Keep the two requests distinct so the store can assess the purchase while the publisher investigates the game problem.

If you do not recognize the charge

Report it promptly through the payment provider’s or platform’s unauthorized-charge or fraud support route. Do not describe an unrecognized charge as an ordinary dissatisfaction refund. Steam distinguishes refund requests made through Steam from chargebacks initiated through a bank or payment provider; see Steam’s payment disputes and chargebacks guidance.
