To research Augments in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies, reach Player Level 11, select a Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade in the Augment Research menu, then earn XP in-game to progress the Augment you chose. Once unlocked, equip one Minor and one Major Augment for each supported item before a match.
How to start Augment Research
- Reach Player Level 11. Augment Research becomes available at that level.
- Open the Augment Research menu and select a Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade.
- Choose an Augment under that item to research.
- Play Zombies and earn XP to make progress toward unlocking the selected Augment.
Activision’s Black Ops 6 Zombies launch guide describes the loop as selecting an item in the menu and earning XP in-game. It does not publish a numeric XP threshold or a research rate. The available official information also does not establish that you must equip or use the item being researched, or that a particular round, kill type, or match strategy progresses research faster.
How Minor and Major Augments work
Each supported item has two Augment slots: one Minor and one Major. A Minor provides a limited advantage; a Major makes a more substantial change to the item’s behavior. After researching options, equip the combination you want to use before entering a match.
For example, the official Zombies deep dive pairs Dark Flare’s Heavy Shadow Minor with its Shadow Ball Major. That is an illustration, not a universal recommendation: compare the in-game effects and choose for the role you want your build to fill, such as personal survival, team support, control, or damage. A useful combination can differ between solo and squad play.

How many Augments are there?
At launch in 2024, Black Ops 6 had 108 Augments: six each for eight Perk-a-Colas, five Ammo Mods, and five Field Upgrades. For each item, those six options comprised three Minors and three Majors. The 108 total is the launch inventory, not a count of all content added in later updates.

Later additions: Frost Blast
Season 03 Reloaded added Frost Blast, with three Minors—Extension, Frostbite, and Extra Charge—and three Majors—Ice Slick, Frost Cast, and Flash Freeze. This means a launch-era count should not be treated as the current complete roster.
For returning items, the official Black Ops 7 overview says completed Black Ops 6 research carries over. That statement applies to returning items; it does not mean every Black Ops 6 item appears unchanged in Black Ops 7.

Choosing Augments for your build
- Start with the effect: Read what the Minor and Major actually change in the game.
- Consider your role: Decide whether the build should emphasize survival, support, control, or damage.
- Account for the team: A choice that suits solo play may not serve the same purpose in a squad.
- Check how the pair works together: Think about how both Augments fit the item and the rest of your build.
There is no single best combination established for every player or situation. The useful comparison is the effect of each option in the context of your play style and the rest of your loadout.
