If your PS Vita is frozen, hold the Power button until it shuts down or the Safe Mode menu appears; this does not perform a factory reset. To erase the console, use Settings > Format > Restore This System. Back up anything you want to keep and deactivate the system before wiping it, especially if you are selling or giving it away.
“Hard reset” is informal shorthand, not Sony’s name for one specific Vita operation. The right fix depends on whether you need to restart, troubleshoot, reset preferences, or erase all local data.
Choose the right kind of PS Vita reset

Sony’s Restore This System guide says the operation deletes data in system storage and does not roll system software back to an earlier version.
Restart a frozen PS Vita without choosing a factory reset
- Press and hold the Power button. If the console is frozen, keep holding it until it shuts down or the Safe Mode menu appears.
- If it shuts down, wait a few seconds, then press and hold Power for about two seconds to start it again.
- If Safe Mode appears, try the least destructive option first, normally restarting the system.
For an ordinary shutdown when the interface responds, hold Power for about two seconds, then select Power Off. Sony’s power and Safe Mode guidance describes holding Power to reach Safe Mode; it does not establish a universal three-button reset shortcut.

A forced shutdown is not the same as a data wipe, but it is not entirely risk-free if the Vita is accessing a game card or memory card. Do not remove either card while its access indicator is active. Sony warns that removing a memory card while the system is on or in standby can corrupt or lose data; see its media handling instructions.
Enter Safe Mode
- Make sure the Vita is off. If it is stuck, hold Power until it turns off or the Safe Mode menu appears.
- Continue holding the Power button until the Safe Mode menu is displayed.
- Use the Vita’s physical buttons to navigate the menu and choose the least destructive relevant option first, usually a restart.
Safe Mode is a restricted startup environment for troubleshooting, not a synonym for “factory reset.” Do not select an option that erases or restores the system unless that is what you intend to do. If Safe Mode does not appear after holding Power for more than 30 seconds, Sony identifies a low battery as a possible cause. Connect the supplied AC adapter, let the Vita charge, and try again.

Reset settings without wiping games and saves
If the Vita still boots but preferences or the home-screen arrangement are the problem, use Settings > Format > Restore Settings and follow the on-screen prompts. This restores software settings to their defaults; it is the appropriate choice before considering a full wipe for misconfigured preferences. Sony notes that this operation cannot be undone and does not downgrade system software. Read the Restore Settings guide before proceeding.

Factory-reset a PS Vita with Restore This System
Use this when you deliberately want to erase local data—for example, before transferring ownership. Do not start until you have backed up what matters and considered deactivation.
- Back up important content (steps below).
- Deactivate the Vita from your PlayStation Network account if you can, especially before selling or giving it away.
- Open Settings > Format > Restore This System.
- Read the warnings and follow every confirmation prompt.
- Leave the system powered on and do not remove cards while the restore is running. Wait for it to finish.
Sony warns that interrupting restoration can cause the system to malfunction. The wipe cannot be undone through the Vita, and deleted local data cannot be recovered by the restore process. Menu wording can vary slightly with language or region, but the English guide’s path is Settings > Format > Restore This System.

What the full restore deletes—and what it does not do
- Local data: The operation deletes data in system storage and resets system settings. Installed applications, local game data, saves, media, and locally stored account information should be treated as at risk; back up anything you need first.
- Internal storage differs by model: PCH-1000 systems do not have an internal memory card. Applicable PCH-2000 systems do, and the restore affects data in that internal storage as well.
- Removable memory card: Do not assume a reset is a backup or that card contents are safe to discard. Back up needed card data separately and remove the card only after the Vita is fully powered off. Cards can also be associated with an account.
- Firmware: The restore does not return the Vita to its launch-era software or downgrade an update. Sony explicitly says it does not restore an earlier system-software version.
- Account-side purchases: A local wipe is not a cancellation of account purchases, but access to an account or future redownload availability can depend on current platform conditions. Keep your account credentials and do not treat the wipe as proof that content will always be downloadable.
Sony’s current online User’s Guide states that it applies to system software version 3.73 or later. The reset instructions above concern the documented system operation, not a firmware rollback.

- Back up what you want to keep. Sony documents Content Manager backups to a compatible computer or PS3. Check game saves, downloaded games and applications, photos, music, videos, PSP game saves, and memory-card contents. PSP game saves are stored on the memory card; Sony explains their Content Manager backup options in its PSP game documentation. Do not assume every account-specific or modified-system file is covered by a standard backup.
- Deactivate the system before handing it over. On the Vita, go to Settings > PlayStation Network > System Activation and deactivate the relevant content categories. Sony warns that you cannot deactivate the device after it has been given away or disposed of, and account activation limits may apply. See the System Activation guide.
- Power off completely, then remove physical media. Remove the PS Vita game card and memory card; remove a SIM card if your model has one. Never pull the memory card while the Vita is on or in standby.
- Run Restore This System. Use Settings > Format > Restore This System, and leave the console powered on until it finishes.
- Check the result. Confirm that the initial setup screen appears before packaging the system. Keep your backup and account details separate from the console.
Sony’s PS Vita hardware documentation describes Content Manager and recommends preparing the system before transfer. A backup is still not a substitute for checking that the specific saves and files you care about were actually copied.

Forgot the parental-control passcode?
Sony’s parental-controls guidance says a forgotten passcode requires restoring the system. That makes this a potentially destructive route: back up what you can and understand that a full restore deletes local data. Do not rely on an unofficial bypass as though it were a Sony-supported, non-destructive method.
If the Vita will not enter Safe Mode or respond
- Connect the supplied or compatible AC adapter and let the battery charge for at least 30 minutes.
- Hold Power again and allow time for the Safe Mode screen to appear.
- If the system is fully off, remove external game or memory cards and retry. Do not remove them while it is on or in standby.
- If there is still no response, stop repeating forced shutdowns and consider a hardware or charging fault.
A degraded battery, damaged Power button, faulty charger or charging port, display failure, or storage/mainboard fault could produce similar symptoms; these are possibilities, not diagnoses. If charging and the documented Power-button procedure do not help, service or repair is more appropriate than opening the console or attempting battery removal. Sony’s older hardware guidance cautions against tampering with the system or removing its battery.
If the Vita is modified or uses custom firmware, do not assume Restore This System removes the modification or safely changes its firmware. Back up configuration files and consult instructions for the exact modification before wiping; Sony’s reset documentation only establishes the official reset’s data and settings effects.
