How to Restart an FFmpeg YouTube Livestream Automatically on an Indian Server

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use two recovery layers: run FFmpeg as a systemd service so Linux can relaunch it after the process exits, and optionally use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer to retry certain temporary output failures without exiting. They cover different failure modes; neither guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube event. Test the exact FFmpeg build, server route and YouTube stream before relying on unattended recovery.

What each recovery layer does

A supervisor and FFmpeg’s output recovery are complementary, not interchangeable. systemd acts after FFmpeg exits; FIFO recovery operates within a still-running FFmpeg process when a supported output error occurs.

Approach Failure addressed Where recovery runs Limit
systemd restart policy FFmpeg exits or fails Outside FFmpeg, under the service manager Restarting the process does not establish that YouTube will continue the same live event.
FFmpeg FIFO output recovery Some temporary output failures handled by the muxer Inside the FFmpeg process Supported errors and behavior depend on the FFmpeg version and configuration; test the actual command.

Using both can cover more failure cases, but does not guarantee gapless playback, automatic approval, or recovery after every interruption. The systemd example in an FFmpeg-user mailing-list post from January 2025 uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5; it is an individual example, not an official guarantee or a tested YouTube recipe (FFmpeg-user example).

Prepare the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Create or open the live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key for the event you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current interface and event workflow.
  2. Use the encoder URL and key together. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials. Keep the key out of scripts committed to repositories, screenshots, public logs and article examples. Use a placeholder such as YOUR_STREAM_KEY; provide the real value through protected service configuration or an environment file with restricted permissions (YouTube stream settings and key guidance).
  3. Choose a protocol and settings your server can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its current encoder guidance accessed in 2026 lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, HEVC and AV1, up to 60 fps. For H.264, it recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not minimum guarantees for every source or network. Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings page before deployment.
  4. Check available capacity. The server needs sustained outbound capacity for the selected stream, plus headroom for network variation and any other traffic. Re-encoding also needs CPU headroom. A higher-quality setting is not useful if the actual route cannot sustain it.

Run FFmpeg under systemd

The following is a minimal service pattern, not a complete, tested unit file for every Linux distribution or FFmpeg input. Replace the executable path, input, output URL and configuration to match the host. Keep credentials in a protected configuration rather than embedding the real stream key in a public command.

1. Create a service definition

For a straightforward setup, create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service with a command suited to your source. This illustrative example assumes a local file input and an environment variable named YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY; adapt it for your actual input and verify the installed FFmpeg options.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube livestream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

This sample re-encodes H.264 at 1080p30 only if the input and output are otherwise compatible with the chosen settings; it is not a universal preset. Set the source resolution explicitly when needed, check the audio track and frame rate, and select a bitrate based on YouTube’s current recommendations and measured server upload capacity. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes options and their placement; many options apply to the next input or output, so ordering matters (FFmpeg command-line documentation).

The service references YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY separately for clarity. Define them in /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env with the stream URL provided by YouTube and your actual key, then restrict file access to the service administrator and account. Do not paste a live key into a public script or expose it in diagnostic output.

2. Enable and inspect the service

  1. After saving the unit, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable it to start at boot with sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  3. Start it using sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  4. Check its state with sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service and recent logs with sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager.
  5. Confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed and reports healthy stream status before leaving the service unattended.

Restart=on-failure relaunches the process after a failure exit; it does not relaunch it after a deliberate clean stop. Use Restart=always only when a manually stopped process should also return. A short RestartSec delay avoids an immediate tight restart loop, but investigate persistent failures instead of treating repeated restarts as a fix.

Optionally retry output failures inside FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer pattern that can attempt recovery from some RTMP output failures. The documented options include -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, -recovery_wait_time 1 and -max_recovery_attempts 0 for indefinite attempts. These options are version-dependent; confirm that the installed build supports them and test them with the exact source and YouTube output configuration. The full FFmpeg documentation describes the FIFO muxer and its options.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 -max_recovery_attempts 0
  "${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"

Here, FIFO recovery is configured to keep trying rather than give up after a fixed number of attempts. It only applies to errors the muxer can recover from; it cannot repair a dead server, invalid key, incompatible encoder settings or every YouTube-side interruption. Keep the service restart policy as a separate layer for process termination, and check the installed build with ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo before putting the options in production.

Test the actual route and recovery behavior

  1. Test the unmodified feed. Start a representative stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube explicitly advises testing before starting a live stream; use the real source, audio and motion characteristics rather than assuming a static test represents the final feed (encoder settings guidance).
  2. Test process recovery separately. In a controlled test, stop the FFmpeg process in a way that makes it exit with failure, then check whether systemd starts it again and whether YouTube accepts the new feed. Do not assume the event lifecycle from a successful process restart: YouTube’s setup guide explains connecting an encoder feed, but does not establish that every restarted encoder resumes the same live event.
  3. Test output recovery separately. In a safe test event, simulate a temporary output interruption only if you can do so without exposing the key or disrupting a production stream. Observe FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube’s status; behavior can differ by build and configuration.
  4. Verify the Indian server’s real path. Check the host’s region, sustained upload capacity and egress terms, CPU headroom if encoding, and whether the actual route to YouTube stays stable. Region labels alone do not prove route quality, and no provider-specific Indian performance figure is established here.
  5. Keep logs useful and credentials private. Review journalctl and FFmpeg output for repeated connection, authentication, or encoder errors. Avoid logging a complete RTMPS URL if it contains the key.

Common failures and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The service repeatedly starts and exits Invalid input path, malformed command, unavailable environment variable, unsupported option, or encoder error Inspect journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service; run the command manually as the service user with a non-production test key and verify options against the installed FFmpeg build.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube does not receive a usable feed Wrong stream URL or key, stream not ready, protocol mismatch, or incompatible settings Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the event setup and RTMPS endpoint, and inspect YouTube stream health.
The process resumes but the live event does not YouTube may not treat the new encoder connection as continuation of the same event Check the event state and YouTube’s current encoder workflow; do not assume a systemd restart preserves event continuity.
FIFO options are rejected The installed FFmpeg build or version may not support the option or muxer configuration Check ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo and the full documentation for that build; remove FIFO options if unsupported and retain service-level process recovery.
FFmpeg stays up but output remains unhealthy Retrying cannot fix a persistent network outage, invalid credential or capacity problem Check outbound route, server egress and upload headroom, credentials, encoder load and YouTube health rather than relying on indefinite retries.
Recovery attempts happen too rapidly Persistent failure combined with a short restart delay can produce repeated retries Use a deliberate RestartSec, inspect the original failure cause, and avoid treating repeated starts as evidence that the feed is healthy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If maintaining a Linux process and its recovery behavior is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; the service attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
