Choose the right OBS source

Looping at the end of a file and behavior when a source becomes hidden or visible are separate settings. OBS lists Loop as off by default for Media Source, and Loop Playlist as on by default for VLC Video Source. The VLC source’s documented default visibility behavior is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” OBS documents these properties in its Media Sources guide.
Loop one video file with Media Source
- In the OBS Sources dock, select + and add Media Source to the scene.
- Open the source properties and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop. This repeats the file after playback completes.
- To start the video from the beginning each time the source becomes active, leave Restart playback when source becomes active enabled. OBS documents this option as on by default.
Use this route when you need one file to repeat. The restart-on-activation control does not replace the end-of-file loop setting.
Loop a multi-file playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC Media Player. If the VLC Video Source is missing from OBS after installation, restart OBS.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add VLC Video Source. Add the video files to its playlist.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled so OBS starts the source again after it runs through its media files.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off to preserve the listed order; turn it on for randomized playback.
- Choose Visibility Behaviour based on what should happen while the source is not visible: continue, pause, or stop. The documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible.
OBS’s Sources Guide also describes adding a playlist through VLC Media Player. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If the source does not appear, check that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS.

PlayFolder script
The OBS-hosted PlayFolder script describes scanning a selected folder, playing supported files sequentially, looping back to the first file, and starting playback when the scene or source becomes active. Its instructions specify Media Source only: do not combine it with VLC Source or OBS’s internal looping options. Follow the resource page’s current setup instructions.
Media Playlist Source plugin
The OBS-hosted Media Playlist Source plugin is an alternative to VLC Video Source with playlist editing and shuffle features. Its resource page says releases from version 0.1.0 require OBS 31 and lists limitations. Check the latest release notes and current platform and OBS-version support before installing it.

Troubleshoot automatic restarting
- The video stops at the end: For one file, check Loop in Media Source properties. For a VLC list, check Loop Playlist.
- The video restarts when you switch scenes: Review Restart playback when source becomes active for Media Source, or Visibility Behaviour for VLC Video Source. These settings govern activation or visibility, not whether playback loops at the end.
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and restart OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- You need automatic folder discovery: The built-in settings cover a file or playlist. Consider the PlayFolder script only if that folder-scanning behavior is needed, and follow its specific configuration instructions.
