To restart an OBS YouTube stream after a power cut, every link in the recovery chain must work: the PC must power back on, the operating system must start the right user session, OBS must launch with the correct stream configuration, and YouTube must accept the encoder feed. In OBS, the --startstreaming launch parameter can start streaming when OBS opens—but it does not turn on a powered-off computer or configure the rest of the startup process.
For a brief outage, a UPS may keep the PC and internet equipment running. If power fails long enough to shut them down, you also need a supported firmware setting to turn the PC on when AC returns, plus operating-system and OBS startup automation. Test the entire setup rather than assuming any one setting guarantees recovery.
Understand what has to recover
A full power cut and a dropped encoder connection are different failures. OBS Automatic Reconnect can help when the encoder connection drops while OBS is still running. It does not boot a shut-down PC or reopen OBS after a complete loss of power. OBS Studio Overview Guide

- The PC powers on when utility power returns.
- The operating system starts the user session and restores the network connection.
- OBS launches with the intended profile, scene collection, sources, and stream settings.
- YouTube accepts the encoder connection and starts the broadcast if its settings allow it.
Each step is a separate potential failure point. YouTube’s encoder auto-start settings do not turn on the PC or launch OBS; OBS’s launch parameter does not configure PC firmware or operating-system startup.
Set the PC to start when power returns
Check firmware for AC-restoration behavior
Look in the PC or motherboard manual and firmware setup for an option named something like “Restore AC Power Loss,” “Restore on AC Power Loss,” or “AC Back.” If present, the available choices may include powering off, powering on, or returning to the previous state. Choose the behavior that matches your recovery goal and test it on your actual hardware.

Firmware options vary by model. ASUS documents “Restore AC Power Loss” with “Power Off,” “Power On,” and “Last State” choices on the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO; that example does not establish that the same feature or menu is available on every PC. ASUS also warns that the feature may not work if power returns immediately after an interruption. Check the documentation for your own device and verify its behavior. Use a UPS for the outage it can cover
A UPS can keep equipment running through an interruption only while its battery and load permit. Put both the PC and the modem or router on battery-backed outlets if the internet connection must stay up too. Size the UPS against the actual combined load and the runtime you need; there is no universal capacity recommendation without those figures.

If the UPS runs out and the PC shuts down, recovery still depends on the PC’s AC-restoration setting. APC says its Back-UPS returns to online operation when adequate utility power returns, but the computer may not restart automatically and may need a BIOS setting that powers it on when power becomes available. Configure the operating system and OBS to start streaming
Make the streaming session available after boot
Configure the operating system to start the user session and launch OBS after reboot using the method appropriate to your OS, device, and account policy. Confirm that required scenes, sources, audio devices, and network access are available at startup. If automatic sign-in is needed, consider the security tradeoff for a device that may be accessible to others. The right procedure depends on the specific operating system and setup.

Prepare OBS before enabling automatic start
- Open OBS and confirm the intended scene collection, profile, sources, audio, and encoder settings.
- Confirm that OBS is configured for the intended YouTube service or server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key; keep the key private. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Use OBS’s
--startstreaminglaunch parameter to start streaming when OBS launches. OBS documents this and other launch parameters in its Launch Parameters guide. - If OBS is launched through a scheduled or automated method, set its working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS recommends.
The launch parameter only addresses the OBS-starts-streaming part of the sequence. You still need an operating-system startup method to open OBS after boot, and the profile and stream configuration must already be correct.

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the relevant stream and review its encoder and auto-start settings. YouTube documents Auto-start and Auto-stop controls that let an encoder start or stop a broadcast. Confirm the behavior for the particular broadcast and stream key you intend to use; do not assume every scheduled or existing broadcast will behave identically after a long outage. YouTube’s controls govern the broadcast side only. They cannot power on your hardware or launch OBS. For platform guidance on testing and monitoring stream health, see YouTube live streaming tips.
Test the complete recovery chain
Rehearse before relying on unattended recovery. Use a private or unlisted test stream and a controlled interruption that is safe for your equipment.
- Start the test stream and confirm the Live Control Room preview, video, audio, and stream health.
- Test a short network interruption separately from a complete power loss. Confirm whether OBS reconnects while still running.
- For a full power-loss test, observe whether the PC powers on when AC returns, the operating system reaches the streaming session, and the network comes back.
- Confirm that OBS opens with the intended profile and scene collection, starts sending video and audio, and connects to the correct YouTube stream.
- Check that the YouTube viewer page and Live Control Room recover as expected.
YouTube also describes testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and verifying that playback rolls over to the backup. That tests encoder redundancy; it does not make the local OBS PC boot after a power cut. A backup encoder needs its own power and connectivity to help in a full outage.
Troubleshoot the point where recovery stops
