How to Restart an Oracle Cloud YouTube Stream Automatically After a Crash

A reliable restart needs recovery at the right layer: encoder process, guest OS/VM, or OCI infrastructure. Here’s how to configure and test each.

To restart an Oracle Cloud YouTube stream automatically, recover the component that failed: configure a supervisor inside the VM to relaunch a crashed encoder, configure the encoder to start when the guest OS boots, and use Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) recovery only for supported infrastructure failures. YouTube’s auto-start setting can start a stream when the encoder connects; it cannot relaunch a crashed encoder.

First identify what crashed

“The stream crashed” can describe three different failures. Check the VM and encoder before choosing a recovery method: a process restart does not fix a stopped VM, and an OCI instance recovery does not necessarily launch the encoder inside the guest.

Failure What to check Recovery layer
Encoder process exited or hung Is the VM still reachable and running? Guest OS service manager or another process supervisor
Guest OS rebooted or VM stopped Did the VM reboot, stop, or become unreachable? OCI instance operation, plus encoder startup at guest boot
OCI host or underlying infrastructure failed Check instance state, OCI notifications, and status metrics OCI’s infrastructure recovery for eligible instances

Make the encoder restart after a process crash

If the VM remains up but the encoder exits, set a restart policy in the guest OS’s service manager or the encoder’s supported supervisor. The right configuration depends on your guest OS and encoder; there is no single service unit or command that applies to every Oracle Cloud YouTube setup. Consult the documentation for the specific OS and encoder, and configure the supervisor to relaunch the process after an unexpected exit.

Set up a safe, observable restart

  • Use the encoder’s documented non-interactive or service mode if available, and arrange for it to start under the intended OS account.
  • Set a restart policy for unexpected exits. Add a delay or rate limit so a broken configuration does not create an endless rapid crash loop.
  • Send process output to logs and arrange an alert or other check for repeated failures. A restart policy without visibility can conceal a stream that keeps failing.
  • Store the YouTube stream URL and key where the encoder can read them securely. Do not expose the key in shared scripts, public logs, or source control.
  • Test a deliberate encoder stop and confirm the supervisor restarts it. Then confirm that YouTube receives usable audio and video, not just that the process appears in a process list.

Start the encoder after a guest OS or VM reboot

A process supervisor may recover an encoder while the guest OS is running, but reboot recovery also requires the encoder to launch at system startup. Configure the guest OS service manager for boot-time launch, preserve the encoder’s configuration and credentials securely across reboot, and test the sequence with a planned reboot before relying on it unattended. OCI start or reboot actions operate on the instance; the encoder still needs to be launched inside the guest.

Understand what YouTube Live settings do

The encoder needs the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; treat the key as a secret and update the encoder if you reset it. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Auto-start is not a watchdog

YouTube’s auto-start setting allows the encoder to start the stream when it connects. Auto-stop can allow the encoder to stop the stream when it disconnects. These settings control stream state at YouTube; they do not monitor the VM or restart a failed encoder process. If you use a scheduled-stream workflow that requires a manual Go Live action, follow that workflow: YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe waiting for the preview and then clicking Go Live for scheduled streams. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Prefer RTMPS when supported

Use the exact RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room when your encoder supports it, along with the stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Do not substitute a guessed server address. YouTube’s streaming protocol guidance explains the connection options.

What OCI recovery can and cannot do

OCI says it automatically attempts to recover an instance when the underlying infrastructure is unhealthy. This is infrastructure recovery, not an application watchdog: it does not replace a guest OS service manager configured to start the encoder. Recovery behavior depends on the instance type, shape, and configuration. OCI’s current documentation describes failure detection within one minute for standard VM instances and, if immediate recovery is not possible, a healthy move and restart beginning within five minutes. These are OCI infrastructure behavior details, not a guaranteed time for YouTube to resume receiving a healthy stream. Check OCI’s instance maintenance documentation for the applicable conditions and instance status metrics or notifications.

Verify recovery end to end

  1. Test privately or unlisted first. Before depending on unattended recovery, test with a private or unlisted stream and check the Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health, audio, and video. YouTube streaming tips.
  2. Confirm the process recovered. Check the guest OS service manager and encoder logs for a successful start, not merely a restart attempt.
  3. Confirm YouTube ingest. Verify that Live Control Room receives a usable preview with audio and video. A running encoder process alone does not prove successful ingest.
  4. Check network capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom; this is guidance, not a universal guarantee of stream quality. Investigate outbound bandwidth and connection reliability if viewers see disruption while the encoder remains up. YouTube’s streaming tips.
  5. Check OCI state if the VM was affected. Review instance status and OCI notifications or metrics to see whether infrastructure recovery occurred.
  6. Test the failure modes separately. Test an encoder exit, a planned guest reboot, and—where practical, without causing avoidable production disruption—your monitoring and response to an instance-level interruption. Confirm the expected recovery at each layer.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not come back

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Encoder is stopped after a crash No restart policy, or the supervisor itself is not running Service-manager status, restart policy, service logs, and whether the service is enabled for the intended account
Encoder does not return after reboot It is not configured to launch at boot, or its configuration or credentials are unavailable Boot-time service configuration, file permissions, and secure access to the saved stream URL and key
Encoder runs but YouTube shows no usable feed Incorrect URL or key, failed connection, or unusable audio/video Live Control Room preview and stream health, encoder logs, exact server URL and key, and outbound connectivity
Connection fails after a key change The encoder still has an old or invalid key Copy the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder securely. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers replacing a problematic key: YouTube live streaming troubleshooting.
Viewers see interruptions although the encoder remains running Unstable outbound network or insufficient upload capacity Connection reliability and available upload bandwidth; YouTube recommends 20% headroom in its streaming tips.
VM recovery occurred but the stream is still down Instance recovery did not start the encoder, or the encoder has not reconnected successfully OCI instance status and notifications, then guest service state, encoder logs, and YouTube preview
Repeated rapid restarts Invalid settings, unavailable credentials, or another persistent startup failure Inspect the first encoder error in logs and add a restart delay or rate limit while correcting the underlying fault
