Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There are two different failures to plan for: FFmpeg may still be running after a temporary network failure, or the FFmpeg process may have exited. For the first, FFmpeg documents RTMP output recovery through its FIFO muxer. For the second, use an external process supervisor configured to restart failed processes. These layers solve different problems, and neither guarantees uninterrupted viewing or continuity of the same YouTube live event.
Choose the recovery method that matches the failure
| Approach | What it handles | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery | Temporary output or network failures while FFmpeg continues processing. | It does not relaunch an FFmpeg process that has exited, and it does not promise recovery from every failure or seamless playback. |
| External process supervisor | Relaunching FFmpeg after it exits, according to the supervisor’s restart policy. | A supervisor may not notice a process that is alive but stalled unless you add a separate health check. |
For broader coverage, use both: configure FIFO recovery for temporary RTMP output failures and a supervisor for process exits. You will need to verify the health-check behavior and YouTube broadcast lifecycle for your own deployment; a restart alone does not establish that viewers will remain in the same live event.
Configure FFmpeg to attempt RTMP output recovery
FFmpeg’s official FIFO muxer documentation gives an example that continues processing in real time during a temporary network failure and attempts to recover streaming every second indefinitely. It uses FIFO as a pseudo-muxer and FLV as the underlying output format:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
- Replace
INPUTwith your actual input file or source. - Adjust the encoding options and stream mapping to match the media you are sending. The example maps the first video and audio streams and encodes video with
libx264and audio withaac; it is not a universal command for every input. - Replace the example RTMP destination with the server URL and stream key configured for your YouTube stream. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it in a script, issue, or example.
- Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the options and check documentation matching that build before relying on their behavior.
The FIFO settings address temporary output failures while FFmpeg remains active. They do not restart an exited process, guarantee preservation of every frame, or ensure viewers experience a seamless stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Restart FFmpeg after the process exits
Configure an external process supervisor to relaunch FFmpeg when the process terminates. The supervisor’s syntax and policy depend on the service or operating system you use, so there is no single restart command that applies to every setup. Check that its policy covers the exit conditions you expect and inspect its logs alongside FFmpeg’s logs.
A process that remains alive but has stopped making progress is a separate case. A basic restart-on-exit policy may not detect it; that requires a separate health check or watchdog. The setup and thresholds for such a check are deployment-specific, so verify what your supervisor actually monitors rather than assuming that a running process is a healthy stream.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings and connection
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the current server URL and stream key, then make sure FFmpeg is using them in the correct fields.
- If your workflow uses RTMPS, verify that the URL uses the RTMPS protocol and the correct server endpoint. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL.
- If you encounter a relevant SSL error, check the RTMPS server and protocol and try the port YouTube recommends for that issue: 443. For connection timeouts, verify the server URL and that your encoder supports RTMPS.
- If your setup uses YouTube’s backup ingest address, remember that the API exposes it as an option for simultaneously sending content; it is not an automatic replacement for configuring FFmpeg’s destination.
These checks can help diagnose setup and connectivity problems, but they do not restart FFmpeg. Keep the stream key private wherever you store or run the command.
Troubleshoot a YouTube stream disconnect
- FFmpeg has exited: Read the process log and check that your external supervisor is configured to relaunch failed processes. FIFO output recovery cannot relaunch an exited process.
- FFmpeg is running and reports a temporary output failure: Check the RTMP destination and consider the documented FIFO recovery mode. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the options.
- FFmpeg is running but the stream is stalled: Check whether your supervisor has a health check that can detect a live-but-stalled process. A restart-on-exit rule alone may not catch it.
- The connection fails before streaming begins: Recheck the current YouTube server URL, stream key, and encoder fields. For RTMPS errors, verify the protocol and endpoint; YouTube advises port 443 for relevant SSL errors.
- You are considering HTTP reconnect flags: Do not treat them as a general fix for RTMP publishing. FFmpeg documents those flags for its HTTP protocol implementation; its FIFO example is the relevant documented pattern for RTMP output recovery.
- The process restarted but viewers report a changed or ended stream: Check the stream’s state in Live Control Room. The available guidance does not establish that restarting FFmpeg preserves the same broadcast or viewer continuity.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving threshold, not a guarantee about what happens to a broadcast after an encoder disconnect or restart. YouTube’s setup guidance also describes ending a stream by stopping encoder output.
