You can ask OBS to start streaming when it launches by adding its documented --startstreaming parameter to a Windows shortcut, then arrange for Windows to launch that shortcut after sign-in or through a scheduled task. That automates the launch request—not proof that YouTube is live. A saved stream setup, a ready network connection, and a full reboot test are still essential.
What automatic restart can—and cannot—do
OBS Studio supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. With it, OBS requests a stream start when opened. Windows can be configured to open OBS after sign-in or by a scheduled task, so the pieces can restore a stream after a restart.
The chain has separate checkpoints: Windows must trigger the launch, OBS must open with the intended configuration, the network must be available, and YouTube must receive the broadcast. A Windows update may restart at a time you did not choose, and opening OBS does not guarantee a successful live broadcast. An OBS forum discussion about a Windows 11 24/7 stream specifically notes that OBS may start before network equipment is ready after a power outage, causing the first connection attempt to fail. Prepare OBS before changing Windows startup

Open OBS and select the profile, scene collection, and YouTube streaming configuration you intend to use. In Settings > Stream, verify the service, server selection if applicable, and stream key. In Settings > Advanced, review Automatically Reconnect. OBS identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting; the available evidence does not establish a universal retry schedule or guarantee recovery in every failure. Confirm the relevant options in your installed OBS version.

Save the configuration and verify that OBS can start a test broadcast successfully under ordinary conditions. OBS recommends testing the configuration before going live. Do not use a real 24/7 broadcast as the first test of a new startup setup.

Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and open the Shortcut tab. In Target, leave the executable path intact and add a space followed by
--startstreamingafter the closing quote. The result should have this shape:"C:pathtoobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Use the actual path on your PC.What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If you want OBS hidden in the notification area, you can also add
--minimize-to-tray. Use it only if the system-tray icon is enabled and you know how to reopen OBS to check its state. -
Click Apply, then test the shortcut manually. Confirm that OBS opens the expected profile and scene collection and attempts to start the stream. Check YouTube itself to confirm whether the broadcast is live.

OBS documents launch parameters and Windows shortcut configuration in its Launch Parameters guide, dated May 30, 2021. For automated or scheduled launches, OBS says to set the working directory—Windows labels this field Start in—to the folder containing obs64.exe.
Choose how Windows launches the shortcut

To use either method, place the prepared shortcut in the Windows account’s Startup folder, or configure a scheduled task to run that shortcut. In a scheduled task, set Start in to the OBS executable’s folder. The OBS forum community suggests Task Scheduler for restart-recovery scenarios, but that is community guidance rather than official Windows documentation. Windows settings and task options can vary by Windows version and account configuration. The sources cited here do not establish exact instructions for Windows Update restart controls, scheduled-task trigger conditions, or unattended sign-in. Configure those in line with your Windows version and your security requirements rather than assuming a task will run before sign-in.

Check YouTube Studio or the relevant YouTube live page to verify that the broadcast is actually live; an open OBS window is not sufficient evidence.

If an outage could leave your router or modem slow to recover, repeat the test with network availability delayed if you can do so safely. Confirm whether OBS reconnects or whether you need to restart the stream manually.
Troubleshooting: OBS opened but the stream did not return
- OBS opens but does not attempt to stream: Check the shortcut’s Target field for a correctly placed
--startstreaming, and verify that the launch used the intended OBS installation. - OBS starts with the wrong scenes or settings: Confirm the profile, scene collection, service, and stream key saved in OBS. Test the same shortcut manually before relying on an automated launch.
- The task runs but OBS fails to find files or settings: Check the task’s Start in working directory. OBS specifies the folder containing
obs64.exefor scheduled or automated launches. - Connection fails immediately after a restart: The network equipment or connection may not be ready when OBS starts. Check the network, then see whether OBS’s automatic reconnect restores the connection; its behavior is not guaranteed for every outage.
- OBS appears to stream but YouTube is not live: Treat the platform’s live status as the check that matters. Review the connection and stream configuration in OBS, then recheck after reconnecting.
- Nothing launches after a Windows update: Determine whether Windows reached the account sign-in state or task trigger you configured. A startup shortcut or scheduled task is not, by itself, a guarantee of unattended account sign-in after every update.
Keep the broadcast eligible and rights-cleared
Automatic relaunch does not change YouTube’s rules or grant rights to the material in a stream. Before leaving a channel unattended, use content you have the right to broadcast and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream requirements. Repeatedly looping prerecorded material is not a substitute for complying with platform policies; the steps above only automate OBS and do not establish that any particular content is permitted or eligible for monetization.
