This is a do-it-yourself workflow—not a direct Google Drive-to-YouTube playlist connection—and the OBS playlist should be refreshed when the folder’s contents change.
How the Drive-to-YouTube workflow works
Google Drive holds the source files, OBS Studio plays a media queue and encodes the live program, and YouTube Live receives that program. YouTube’s own playlists are separate: they collect videos already on YouTube, whereas an OBS VLC playlist feeds local media files into the live encoder.
The official guidance describes these components separately; it does not describe a native YouTube feature that connects a Drive folder directly to a rotating live playlist. Scheduling or reusing stream settings can reduce repeated setup, but automatic starts for every new file added to Drive would require a separate, verified automation workflow.
Prepare the Drive files on the streaming computer
Choose streaming or mirroring in Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop offers two storage modes. With streaming, files are primarily stored in the cloud and become available offline when accessed. With mirroring, files are stored both on the computer and in Drive. Google says, “Mirrored files will always be stored on your computer and in the cloud.” See Google Drive Help’s explanation of streaming and mirroring.

For a stream that should be less dependent on continued access to Drive, mirror the source videos or make sure each streamed file has been made available offline before going live. This is a reliability precaution based on the storage modes, not a guarantee against playback interruptions.
Confirm the files are ready
- Make sure the streaming computer can access every video in the intended rotation.
- With streamed files, verify offline availability before relying on them during a broadcast.
- Check that the files open and play, including their audio, before adding the playlist to a live production.
Build the rotating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; without it, the source may not appear. See the OBS Project Media Sources guide.
- Add the source. In OBS, select or create the scene for your broadcast, add a VLC Video source, and include the video files you want in its media playlist. OBS notes that this source can hold a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to restart playback after the last item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback rather than a predictable sequence.
- Review the queue. Play the source and confirm that the files appear in the intended order—or that shuffle is working as intended—and that both video and audio reach the OBS preview.
Do not assume the OBS playlist watches a Drive folder and updates itself. When you add, remove, or replace files, check and refresh the playlist so the live queue matches the folder.

Choose a playback order

Send the OBS program to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule a stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the stream setup process.
- Copy the connection details. Get the stream URL and stream key from YouTube, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share it publicly.
- Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder output and confirm the picture and sound appear in YouTube’s preview or watch page. YouTube recommends preparing encoder streams in advance and monitoring live audio and video; see Manage live stream settings.
- Monitor the broadcast. Verify that the media continues playing, audio is audible, and YouTube is receiving the intended program. YouTube’s live streaming tips for computer recommend trying a test stream first.
YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A multi-video queue in this method does, however, depend on the encoder workflow in OBS.
Test the full rotation before relying on it
- Confirm each queued video opens and plays with audio on the streaming computer.
- Check that OBS displays the video and audio in its preview.
- Verify that the YouTube preview or watch page receives the encoder output.
- Let the playlist reach its end and confirm it loops, or confirm the shuffled behavior you chose.
- After changing the Drive folder, refresh the OBS queue and test the changed playlist again.
These checks validate the individual links in the workflow; the setup should not be treated as personally tested or as a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.

Understand the two kinds of YouTube playlists
An OBS VLC playlist is a queue of media files used by the encoder to produce a live program. A YouTube playlist is a collection of YouTube videos. The YouTube Data API playlist guide concerns YouTube playlist items: API writes require OAuth authorization and refer to a playlist and a YouTube video ID. It does not turn files in Drive into a live encoder queue. You can manage YouTube playlists in Studio separately using YouTube’s playlist instructions.
What this setup does—and does not—automate
The workflow rotates the media included in the OBS playlist while OBS is running and sending output. It does not establish that a newly added Drive file will appear in OBS automatically, or that YouTube will start a new broadcast for every folder change. YouTube’s live upload schedule tips cover planning streams, not a Drive-folder trigger for starting broadcasts. Fully unattended scheduling is a separate automation requirement that needs a separately verified encoder or API workflow.
