To rotate a VLC playlist during a scheduled YouTube livestream, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, play the ordered playlist in VLC, and route VLC’s audio and video through a YouTube-capable encoder to the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key. Start the encoder, check the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live. Scheduling the event and sending its media feed are separate steps.
How the VLC-to-YouTube setup works
YouTube Studio creates the scheduled event and its watch page. VLC plays your playlist; an encoder sends the resulting audio and video to YouTube. YouTube’s documented workflow does not establish a complete, supported VLC-only setup for sending a playlist directly to YouTube over RTMPS. Treat VLC as the playlist source and use an encoder configured for YouTube ingest.
The stream key and server URL belong in the encoder, not in a public event link. YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that tell an encoder where to send its feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Use the RTMPS URL shown in the event’s Live Control Room.
Prepare and repeat the VLC playlist
- Put the files in the intended order. Open each video in VLC once to confirm it plays, then create and save a playlist containing the clips you want to rotate.
- Choose what repeats. VLC has separate repeat-current and repeat-all behavior. Select repeat-all to cycle through the playlist, or repeat-current to keep one item playing. Confirm the selected mode before connecting the feed to the encoder.
- Decide how VLC reaches the encoder. Use an encoder’s media-source or capture-source workflow to bring in VLC playback, and verify that both video and audio reach the encoder. The exact source-selection controls vary by encoder; the available official VLC example does not document a direct YouTube RTMPS configuration.
Schedule the YouTube livestream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Manage and schedule a stream.
- Set the event’s title, visibility and other metadata deliberately. Scheduling creates a watch page that you can promote and lets viewers set reminders; it does not start VLC or publish an encoder feed.
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Prefer the RTMPS URL YouTube provides. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Configure the encoder for YouTube
If the encoder offers a YouTube or RTMPS preset, select it and confirm it is using the URL and key for the scheduled event. Otherwise, enter the supplied server URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Route VLC’s playback into the encoder and check that the encoder registers both audio and video before the event.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Video, audio and keyframes
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate and codec, so consult YouTube’s current bitrate guidance when choosing a target. Set a bitrate and resolution your upload connection can sustain rather than treating a higher setting as automatically better.
Test, start and end the scheduled stream
- Test the complete path: VLC playlist to encoder, then encoder to the scheduled event. YouTube’s live tips recommend setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the picture moves, audio is present, stream health is acceptable and the intended public or unlisted watch page is available.
- Publish the event. Once the preview is ready, click Go live. The encoder feed alone does not publish the scheduled event.
- Finish deliberately. Use End stream in the scheduled-stream workflow and stop the encoder as directed. A repeating VLC playlist does not, by itself, schedule an unattended start or end for the YouTube event.
What VLC’s playlist tools do—and do not—prove
VLC can play a sequence of files and repeat either the current item or the full playlist. VideoLAN’s VLM playlist-broadcast example also demonstrates sequential inputs on one channel and uses sout-keep to preserve output between media items. That example sends output over HTTP to VLC receivers. It is useful for understanding playlist sequencing, but it is not a direct YouTube RTMPS tutorial and should not be treated as proof that a particular VLC build can publish a scheduled YouTube event by itself.

Troubleshoot common problems
- No incoming preview: Confirm the encoder is running, the URL is the RTMPS address for the correct event, and the matching key is entered. If the key may have leaked, reset it and replace it in the encoder.
- Playlist stops after one item: Check the playlist order and whether repeat-all, rather than repeat-current, is selected. If using VLM, its documented example uses
sout-keepacross consecutive inputs; VLM configuration and VLC’s ordinary playlist controls are related but not identical interfaces. - Preview is unstable or drops frames: Reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution to fit available upload capacity, then test the full path again. YouTube advises testing in advance and using settings reliable for the internet connection.
- Audio or video is missing: Check the VLC playback first, then verify the chosen media or capture source and the encoder’s audio/video meters or preview. Make sure the encoder is actually receiving both before troubleshooting YouTube ingest.
- Viewers cannot find or watch the event: Recheck the scheduled event’s visibility and watch page in YouTube Studio. A working encoder connection does not set event visibility for you.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping VLC and an encoder running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a camera livestream. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
